No, it can be much more. Have a read of Peter F Hamilton and his description of Post Humaniy. Then compare that to Alaster Reynolds and his idea of Abstraction. And then you also have the concept of clones and implanted consciousness. There are loads of great examples of in most decent sci fi stories.

Alister Reynolds is a more hard sci fi but absolutely worth read. Aurora Rising is a newish one that I’m reading at the moment and I’d definitely recommend that for a starting place.
