The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a long-awaited rule requiring all new cars, SUVs, and minivans, as well as some new small trucks and buses to carry rear visibility technology.

Automakers haven't been previously required to include these systems but NHTSA did recommend it, saying it can save many deaths and injuries from backover crashes.

There are nearly 210 backover deaths each year, the agency said. About a third of those deaths are children, and many are caused by parents, it said.Rear facing cameras, including those that automakers already offer, would save between 59 and 69 deaths a year, NHTSA said.

News.

Why in the world would anyone leave small children behind the cars?! How dumb can they be?! I would never ever leave my small baby behind any vehicle.

I think most of those will be young children who are able to move around and run behind the car as it's reversing. I don't think it refers to parents leaving their babies on a driveway and reversing over them.

It's already standard on many cars. And the cost is minimal. NBD.

I drive a 2010 Dodge 4x4 Cummings diesel and mine came with one . thing comes in handy for parallel parking and also backing up into parking spaces when driving such a large truck. 4 years of using the camera I honestly could not go back to a vehicle without one . lol

Guess I'll buy a new car before this then. More bulls*** to take away from actually driving the damn vehicle. Might as well just go i Robot and make everything drive itself since it's already heading that way. Backup cameras, auto parallel parking, lane deviation, blind spot warning, etc. Piss off.

And TVs should be in all black and white, and we should have to get up to change the channel instead of using these new blasted remote controls! This techno logical stuff is getting out of hand!!!1

Some company / companies gave a lot of money to a few lawmakers and a lot of people are going to make a lot of money off of this.

There is no law that mandates any of that stuff, the market supported all of those innovations.....

All.. err.. at least most of that stuff makes driving safer though.

I doubt it, in fact I would bet a lot of these so called safety features makes people even more inattentive than they already are. Blind spot indicator? pfft why bother checking mirrors and blind spot before changing lanes. I don't trust anyone while driving, although a lot of that is due to Dubuque drivers who are absolutely terrible. I've only lived here 3 years and have been in more close calls than my 12 years of driving. I feel safer driving downtown Chicago during rush hour.

I have 360 degree camera view and it's awesome to have, but cameras shouldn't be forced on consumers. Mirrors work fine unless there have been a mass number of casualties due to parallel parking errors happening and I missed the news report.

Looks interesting , just wondering if I will be able to send/receive Text messages on it and will it come with a YouTube app.

Is there really any need for this law? Things were pretty much going this way anyways (my sister has a car that does this).

Why put unnecessary requirements on car manufacturers?

I propose all womens locker rooms have cameras...I mean they could slip and fall in the shower and I wanna be there to help. ;)

This is generally good news for Auto industry, I should know. :) Now car manufacturers can charge you more for the extras, whats not to love?

The funny thing I find in this is, you would have thought they would made wearing helmet for riders mandory nationwide, and using of cellphone with your hand illegal (which are pretty much the requirements in most developed nations) before this.

Starting around 2016, find and buy up stock of whatever electronic companies are supplying the cameras.

I've never had a rear cam, but I'm all for it. By 2018, it'll be the time for me to get a new car so if it's standard all the better. I'm sure if it's standard in the US, it'll carry over to Canada.

Parallel parking is a pain in the ass. Any help is welcome. I'm not worried about crashing due to lack of skill, but crashing due to trying to hurry up so I don't bog down cars behind me waiting in my lane.

I'm always courteous to drivers and don't like to bog down cars behind me. I always inch up and try to leave space for a car behind me to turn right by squeezing through if there's enough space to safely do so.

I hate when people take forever to parallel park. So if cams can help people do it twice as fast, all the better.
