Official Thread VR Headset

I'd like to see developers focus on solid, stable graphics that are going to fool the eyes and mind through a stable frame rate, high resolution and textures appropriate to the resolution.
If that means flat textures without bumps and refractive specularity (yes, I just made that up), that's fine. I'd rather do VR in a crisp, silky smooth Lego world than a photo realistic flip book with rral-time clothing soilage that went blurry when I got close up.

Yeah, at least make the games graphics very customizable so we can tailor the VR experience to our PC setup. One step at a time! I'd love to peek 10 years into the future and see where technology around this will be at a pace like this.

Valve announces SteamVR Beta!

"a beta for ‘SteamVR’ a new way to interact with Steam using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset."

Read an article on cvg yesterday where the developers of Rift are saying that games that implement Rift could command a higher retail price. I know that most gamers would be up in arms about that but I would be prepared to pay a premium if it was implemented properly and the guy was saying that some of the new games being developed for the Rift will absolutely blow us away.
Sorry I can't link but posting this from my phone.

That would be a tough pill for me to swallow. I'd really have to see if it's worth it or not.

I'd pay a premium, sure. I would expect to, with new technology like this. I just hope the price is not ridiculously high. But yeah, I imagine you'll have to pay a good sum for the gear, then a good bit for the machine that runs it, and then, more for the games, too. After a while, the price will fall, but early adopters will have to pay quite a bit to get in on the fun.

Not likely IMO. I suppose it would depend on the publisher/developer though. Oculus themselves have said they are going to be giving financial relief to companies that are developing VR games. Most likely to deter a premium price at launch. Now if VR really takes off, then who knows. I'd imagine EA/bioware would gouge people more where they can. Indie titles and small devs...probably not so much.

From the Verge:

{Within the context of their recent 75m in additional funding]
In addition to mass producing the hardware, though, the company says it wants to support software developers who are risking their time and money developing games for the Oculus Rift instead of more established platforms.

"They're not just betting that their game will be successful, they're also betting that Oculus will sell enough units to make their game profitable, and that's a really big bet for a developer to make," says Palmer Luckey, Oculus founder. "If a company is going to take out a lot of time from their development schedule to build a game in VR, we don't want them to have to shoulder all of that risk themselves."

This is another small survival horror indie game for the rift I am anticipating.

Sir David Attenborough making nature documentary for Oculus Rift

Sir David Attenborough, famous for his career in nature documentaries, will write and present a new project filmed for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Titled Conquest of the Skies, the documentary is currently being filmed in Borneo with an eight-camera rig that can capture a full 360 degree image, Atlantic Productions’ commercial director John Morris told realscreen. He said that the production company has already secured several Oculus Rift development kits and thatConquest of the Skies, will be the first major wildlife production for the device. “In terms of the creative challenge, we look at this as being comparable to the beginning of the film industry,” he said.

Morris said he thinks of virtual reality as “a new platform you can monetize,” and that “we’ll see million of these thing being sold.”

I would definitely want to check that out. The King of nature Documentaries with the new experience of VR

Looks awesome. I could see something like this being really fun in VR. Not really a space combat guy, but in VR I think I would be more willing to try different things just for the experience.

I'd LOVE all of my favorite horror games to be in VR mode!:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:

You've got to watch the pewdiepie and markiplier Oculus horror vids on youtube. The horror games scare the crap out of them, even though the graphics are terrible. It's hilarious.

One of the games made markiplier (a grown man) stop and cry. Pewdiepie couldn't even finish it. I want to try!!

I can't wait for the Rift. I've been following it religiously for a while and everything I have read and seen makes me think this will be the next big step not only in gaming but entertainment as a whole. I mean what more could artists/directors/game creators want then the ability to literally transport the audience into their vision. A vision with none of the limitations and drawbacks that they normally face with traditional mediums. If you haven't seen it here is a great talk on VR by Michael Abrash when he was at Valve.

I have a DK2 on preorder so i'll post impressions when I get it next month.

You sound a lot like me! :D I have my DK2 on pre-order as well, we should play some stuff together. Jay Nova is my steam handle. Also, have you read 'Ready Player One' or 'Snow Crash' yet? If not, I highly recommend it!

My steam handle is the same as my username. Don't really play many multiplayer games but that will probably change with the Rift. Supposedly, its a surreal experience seeing another person in VR. The only one I can really think of right now is riftmax theater, though. If you come across any other multiplayer vr games once we get our dk2's let me know. Would definitely be down to play.

I've heard a lot about those 2 books but haven't read either yet. Which one do you recommend more?

I personally enjoyed ready player one more but both are great. Also, minecraft can be played in multiplayer in vr. So that'll be great fun.

I played the Aliens Isolation demo using Rift at E3. It was a spectacular experience. However, the screen resolution still needs work (I know that it's already come a long way).

VR is the most exciting thing in tech and gaming for me. I have never had a desire for a gaming pc but if I have to build a good gaming pc to get to use VR I will when it come out

Super excited for Oculus Rift, will probably hold out on buying one until Star Citizen comes out as I'm primarily a console gamer but hopefully the consumer version and Star Citizen will release around the same time. Will be building a stonking PC to power them both.
I'm actually glad that Facebook bought it as it's got the cash to bring this to the masses. I'm also looking forward to things like VR trips to museums and maybe even raving in my living room out of it whilst at a VR beach party in Ibiza lol.

I think Occulus is going to be a fad, this is America, alot of people do not want to exert themselves to play a video game. Most would rather sit on their couch with a controller.

Oculus rift is a seated experience. Just because some other companies come out with treadmills doesn't change that. Try to approach with open mind and give it a shot when it comes out. I think you'll be surprised.

Yea but at that point how virtual is it? Just because you have screens strapped to your head that may be 3D doesn't really make it VR IMO.

IMO you have to be engaged and exert yourself for it to be VR, to walk you should be on that treadmill, to shoot, you should have a have gun peripheral in your hands where you have to legitimate sight up your targets, if not, you're just playing a video game where the screens are strapped to your face.

It is...very virtual? Is reality not reality when you are sitting down in real life all the sudden because you're not walking around or shooting a gun? This is the dawn of VR and there still are problems to be solved, but you can look around in a 3d world now. Think about it, when you have the headset on, everything in-game is to scale in full stereo 3d just like how we perceive the real world. That does not interest you at all? I mean, input is an issue right now but Oculus is working on it. For now, I'll use my 360 gamepad, G27 wheel, kb/m, flight stick and enjoy the hell out of it until input evolves more. But to say VR is not VR without being able to replicate every physical interaction as in the real world is not very fair.
