Sony Corp. shares fell the most in two and a half years after reporting slower growth in its PlayStation business and a cut in revenue forecasts for the year, becoming the latest big technology company to suffer from the slowing global economy.

---

“It’s definitely not as positive as the headline numbers would suggest. It feels slightly negative overall,” said Andrew Jackson, head of Japanese equities at Soochow CSSD Capital Markets in Singapore.

---

With fewer games in store for the already-aging PlayStation 4 and Sony’s own Xperia phone business still bleeding money, Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida will have to prove that Sony’s turnaround can continue instead of peaking this year. The mobile division continued to struggle, with an operating loss of 15.5 billion yen during the quarter, the fourth straight period. Yoshida has so far rebuffed pressure to sell off the unit, saying it is vital for pushing innovation including 5G-related research.

“The market is closely watching for a turnaround in the mobile communications business, but it looks things are worse year-on-year due to a decrease in smartphone unit sales,” Jackson said.

Yeah they still have a few big games coming but it's clear that we are about to transition to a new generation. Slower growth is a given based on the age of the hardware, the lack of bargain pricing and the fact that the big games they have left don't have announced dates or probably mostly appeal to people who already own the console.

LOL Playstation is #1 selling console every year. And it's plenty AAA games on the horizon (Days Gone, Dreams, Project Awakening, Monkey King Hero, TLOU2, Deathstranding, Grandblue Fantasy, MLB series, Babylon's Fall, NiOh2, New Guilty Gear, Grandblue Fantasy Versus, Ghost of Tsushima, Gun Grave G.O.R.E, GoD Eater 3 etcetera). That don't include indies and PSVR games. If you ask me the article is pointless.

Number one selling yes for sure but it's going to reach a saturation point where sales are going to start to suffer especially when the price is still as high as it is. 2018 was an amazing year for their first party line up there is no doubt about that but I don't see another stacked year like that happening while the PS4 is the main console. TLOU2 will he HUGE no denying that but if it comes in 2020 and not 2019 that'll mean this year is pretty much Days Gone (which I am looking forward to) Dreams and their MLB game, most of those other games you listed are sort of niche titles. Like I said in my post their 3 biggest first party games on the horizon have no release date yet, TLOU2, GoT and DS could all be 2020 games. I'm still not sold on DS being a big hit by the way, nobody knows what the hell it's supposed to be and Kojima's last game was the most overrated game I can remember. Sony will do what's best I'm sure, they clearly know what they are doing when it comes to the gaming industry but the fact is you can only sell to so many people at $299 before you've pretty much gotten everyone who's willing to buy one and that point probably isn't too far off.

That and I feel Dreams May be a sinker, even as cool as it may seem...I’m still buying it, not Days Gone though

I think both will do well but not be anything like God of War or Spider-Man, those did crazy numbers. I think Dreams will be very popular with the type of gamers who are into that creative kind of thing, it's just not my cup of tea so I won't be getting it. I think Days Gone will pick up a little steam before release, I've read mostly positive things from people who have played it so if the reviews are good I think that will help push it to decent sales.

Everyone playing catch up to Sony in games and sales.

PlayStation games have terrible replay value(except Bloodborne)

Even though they play better than Xbox I give the edge to Xbox due better replay value.

That depends, MP isn't replay that's a different mode. God of war and Spider-Man have new game plus modes which makes replaying them a little more attractive. They are also much longer SP experiences than anything MS has put out this generation, especially god of war.

No doubt and nobody will catch up to them, what you'll end up seeing over time is people writing articles about how sony's sales have fallen more than anyone else's but that's only because they've already reached WAY more customers than the competition. They are basically about to hit a point where the only way they can go is down, it's not bad at all it's just you can't keep that level of success up forever in one generation, at some point you'll have already sold a machine to everyone who wants one, good thing for sony more people want a PS4 than any other console.

Mp=staying in that universe/replay.

Investors are jittery. PS4 sold 17.8mil, more than any other console last year, and PSN generated more revenue than Eshop and XBL by miles. Investors will sell at the drop of a hat even if a product sells only one less than previous years numbers. And let's not forget Sony's phone business aka Xperia which has been bleeding money for years.

I don't think any console has sold this well this deep into its life cycle as far as year over year is concerned. If Sony didn't have to worry about MS, we wouldn't see the PS5 until 2021.

False Narrative

People say this every year.

Don't underestimate what Dreams can do.

I just don't think that create your entire game kind of thing appeals to a huge audience, it will do well but not like insane numbers unless someone creates something on it that everyone thinks they need to play.

Dreams is like the YouTube of gaming. Anyone can enjoy it.

Beloved franchises we haven't seen in decades will be made in Dreams.

You can ply endless content without ever touching it's creations tools. The Beta was a huge success so it won't be short of content.

POTENTIALLY it could be another hit for Sony.

I have a feeling it’ll do as well as Little Bug Planet, where most players will be searching for interesting games/modes that the dedicated few have made. Could be a cool portfolio piece though, as many devs have hired map/modders/editors from past big games (far cry, halo, tony hawk, etc).

Dreams is far beyond LBP. It can appeal to any audience...

You can pretend games don't exist to feed your narrative but it's not reality...
PS4 has quality exclusive multiplayer games that i logged many hours into?

NOPE!
Heck i barely play exclusives on PS4.
Beat gow(have much left to do but no desire to play)
NEVER even tried Spiderman and yes i own it.

I'll tell you why PS4s are in weak demand, 100 million people already have them.
