What are your feelings about pitbulls?

I had a friend who got his face torn up by one and had to go the hospital . He was helping someone move some stuff in the yard and bent over, and the dog didn't like it I guess.

The problem is they bite so hard, that it can do serious damage. For that reason, I just don't trust them that much.

Of course, I don't trust anyone's dog for that matter because I have no idea how they were raised. I mean, if it's like a beagle or something, okay. But any dog that qualifies as a "guard" dog, I don't trust. Hell, back when I had a miniature pinscher/ miniature poodle combo, I didn't trust my own dog around strangers, and he was only a foot and a half tall.

Plenty of them now
Yeah, I was about to say, that's dogs in a nut shell for the most part. I don't know the entire history, but it covers quite a bit of the list.

As for pit bulls, I'm lucky. I'm allergic to dogs and pretty cautious around them all anyway. It doesn't bother me any more or less.

Val, please give us your first hand experience on this subject.
When I was separated from my wife I stayed with a friend who breeds and sells them.
UGLY and unpredictable they are.
He had to build a fence TWO times cause those SOB's would jump over the 1st he built (which was high)
anytime people would walk by.
You are a fool to assume you know a thing about me.

Everyone I've met has been friendly and great. Having said that, I don't trust them due to the years of inbreeding and breeding for aggressiveness. Their bite is unstoppable if they do. Most people cannot own one and shouldn't.

Well I only go by how you carry yourself on these forum. Sorry if I assumed you were pulling something out your a**.

I wouldn't want to see them wiped off the planet. But i can't help but feel that training and a permit should be required to own a pit bull.

I had a childhood friend that got mauled by one. Somebody's pit got loose and ran under a parked truck. Little 6 year old boy sees dog run under truck, tries to be helpful and coax it out and winds up with 70+ stitches in his face.

That's not the dogs fault. That's the parents fault not teaching their child to respect a hiding, which means defensive, dog.

I don't. It's the owner of the pit bull's fault. You've got a dog who could potentially maul a child, you keep him secure.

That's any dog. If s dog is hiding, it's being defensive and should not be approached. He could have been hit by a car and injured. It could be a lot of things. You never approach an animal, any animal, that is being highly defensive.

I bet Kassen would call you all liars and post links to prove it.

Yeah, it would've been nice if the parents had taught them that. But I disagree that it is the parent's fault. The blame lies squarely on the dog owner.

I guarantee that is the way the law sees it. The judge isn't going to chide the parents of the kid with the mauled face -- "Why didn't you teach her to recognize when a dog is defensive and to keep her distance? What's wrong with you?" He's going to find the dog owner liable.

There's a general rule when it comes to "dogs behaving badly" -- it is always the dog owner's fault.

If you own a pitbull, you are 100% responsible for its actions. That's true of all dogs, but all dogs are not created (or bred) equal. Approaching a Yorkie does not carry the risk that approaching a pitbull does. Pitbulls are the most dangerous dogs there are.* You own one, you accept the additional risk and responsibility that go with it.

*actually #2. Pitbull gets "Most dangerous dog in America," but there's another dog, a Caucasian Ovcharka, that gets #1.

Some breeds are naturally more aggressive than others, some are more trainable than others, some are better retrievers etc, people who claim Pits are the same as all breeds aren't doing the breed any favors even if their hearts are in the right place. Pit Bull's are often more aggressive than other breeds, they are a very small percentage of the total dog population in the US but are number one in fatal attacks by far. I've met some very sweet pitbull's and also some that just wanted to tear the crap out of anything they saw. Often times people who are attracted to the breed only like them because of their reputation as being tough, they won't spend the time or make any effort to train them or socialize them which is something that is a necessity with that breed. When you go to shelters here in So Cal they are full of Pits and Chihuahua's, often times the "not for adoption" area is almost full of Pit Bull's.

I went to the vet last week to take my husky/shepherd mix in for a checkup and there was a woman walking a Pit Bull in and she clearly couldn't keep it under control, he wanted to fight with every dog so even though she was a walk in everyone with appointments let her go first just to get her and that dog out of there. Funnily enough a guy came in after with a 170lb Mastiff who was wagging his tail and happy to see everyone. I would never blame the animal it's only doing what comes naturally to it, there is no such thing as an evil animal but I don't blame people who don't trust Pits or cities that ban them, personally they are the only breed that I actually feel apprehensive about when I see them.

Woah, I am totally s*** with dog breeds. I always thought a Doberman was a pitt bull.

Don't google "junkyard dogs" when trying to get pictures of dogs either. It comes up with a fat man in spandex for the first 20 pages.

They should be classified like an exotic pet and not a regular dog.

I think even by animal standards they're f***ed in the head to varying degrees on their instincts. Even those raised in a friendly home can be randomly set off. The attacking dog might even be doing so from a protective instinct on behalf of it's family or not understanding the presence of new children or visiting relatives.

Yes many dog breeds can attack or bite randomly like this, but not as severely.

Oddly enough, I think they should be kept around for security or similar work they were bred for. Why waste them? Only difference is humane training and regulating them including a combination of home pet and security, but requiring a permit.

My opinion aligns with yours, DJ. Would rather not see them anymore and bred out into oblivion
Dog sat a friends Stafford/Pointer mix a few times. My friend and his girlfriend were great owners and not azholes.
Dog was the sweetest animal you could ever want and would love to sit on you lap and sleep all day.
however, get it within scent of another animal and it would immediately go into beat mode and would do anything its power to get free and maul that dog to death. My friends were lucky not to get sued. Saw it happen more than I wanted to.

Similar breed is the mastiff. I have a neighbor who had a few. One almost took my arm off when I went over to get my kids. That one died suddenly then they got themselves a pair. They ended up mauling another neighbor's kid in their living room and had to be medevac'd to Hopkins with life threatening injuries. Even though they had to put down those dogs, they still have other dogs and we don't let our kids play over there.

That's really upsetting, that all that happened.

It's kinda s***ty that dogs can be genetically engineered to such a degree.
