What movies have you seen recently?

Seconds.

I picked this up when it came out on blu-ray and I forgot about it. Finally got around to watching it over the weekend. Most of the stuff I've seen by Frankenheimer has been post-Prophecy, with only the Manchurian Candidate and French Connection II being his pre-Prophecy stuff I've got around to watching.

Seconds caps his "paranoia" trilogy. The movie begins with Arthur, a middle-aged man who is seemingly living a rather empty existence. He's done well for himself, is married, and has a daughter he doesn't see all that much anymore. He receives a phone call from a friend who, by all accounts, should be dead. His friend informs him of the Company; the Company can offer him a second chance--a new face, a new life.

Through unscrupulous means the Company gets him to follow through with the procedure. He's "reborn" as Tony, played by Rock Hudson, who's young, handsome, lives in a beach house, and is a successful painter. Painting is what Arthur subconsciously yearned to do for a profession.

Of course, things don't go all that well.

The movie is decidedly uncomfortable. It's bleak. It's hopeless. And you can't take your eyes off it. It's the only film I've seen Hudson in and he f***ing nails it. John Randolph's Arthur would get along get well with Willy Loman. The performances throughout are outstanding.

The score too is something else. It's infrequent but effective.

Anyway, if you dig existential horror films I'd definitely check it out. It's a great movie to pair with Eyes Without a Face (which is also brilliant) if you're interested in some macabre double feature at home.

Have you seen The Skin I Live In ?

that pretty f***in bleak

@blue
I was just about to buy BD for Seconds from Criterion sales at B&N. Thanks for your write-up. Been attracted to that movie since I watched the trailer. DAT WIDE ANGLE LENS

I saw Spike Lee's Oldboy.

8/10

Entertaining. The ending really owned me though, didn't see that coming but I thought it worked.

Go watch the Chan-Wook Park version. The Spike Lee remake IMO sucks in comparison.

How to Train Your Dragon 2. I'm not sure if I liked this movie or not. it sure was pretty and damn was the 3-D good but not sure if I liked it.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - Average
It was enjoyable. Far darker than any of the previous ones. It felt more like movie than a tech eye candy orgasm. Having said that, the story wasn't that interesting and felt like a stop gap for the next one. I did enjoy it. The Tranformers are still great to look at though the CGI isn't as in your face as it is in the previous movies. Comedy is at a minimal.

22 Jump Street - Good
Just like the first one, exactly like the first one, it was enjoyable and a good amount of laugh out loud moments. The movie knows what it is, it even states it right from the beginning. Hill and Tatum work very well together. You'll laugh.
There's a scene that's very reminiscent of the scene in Bad Boys when Reggie comes to pick up Burnett's daughter for a date. I laughed pretty hard at it.
If you liked the 21 Jump Street you'll enjoy 22 Jump Street. If you thought 21 was ok you'll think 22 is the same or slightly more enjoyable.

Agree on both.

21/22 Jump street are pretty much the only Tatum movies I can watch and enjoy.

Watched Transcendence...and I was entertained. Wasn't amazing but I appreciated being able to stomach Depp again.

I really liked Seconds when I saw it. Was like a bad trip or something. Been a while since I saw it though. Really opened my eyes to Rock Hudson as an actor, never cared for him before seeing it.

This is an old movie. About 10 years old. But I watch it every year on DVD.

If you like gritty acting, no CGI or gimmicks, and classic cops and robbers bickering, watch the movie Narc with Ray Liotta (he looks like a fat ass in the movie), Jason Patrick and Busta Rhymes. Don't worry Busta doesn't do any rap music.

If you haven't seen the movie, don't ready the spoiler anywhere.

Robocop 2014
i really liked it. way better than i thought it would be. they took out most of the fun factor from the original but at least it kept the essense of the original.

With all good remakes, there's gonna be something everybody loves/hate about it. Personally, I could've used less family interaction. I would've liked a combo where Robocop loses his family mid-film. Less jumping would've been nice, but his sprinting ability made sense to me. Would've been nice if they had had a more memorable villain as well. In fact, I'd say the biggest weakness of this film is that none of the characters truly stand out where the original had a much stronger cast and dialogue between characters. Still though, good movie and I wouldn't be against a sequel.

Watched Eastern Promises last night, great movie. I hadn't seen it since it was originally released, forgot how much I liked it. A violent tale of the Russian mob in the UK, Viggo Mortinssen(?) does a bang up job.

Biggest issue with film compared to the other is who it is aimed at. The Original was more for Adults. It had a much darker tone and more grizzly scenes. The new one is aimed at a younger audience.

the original worked really well as a straight up action hero movie but the remake took all of that away from it so i can understand why it was such a box office flop.

I believe it was only a flop domestically in the US. It was a success internationally overall and the movie made a combined $242 million according to boxofficemojo.com. So you never know.

Saw The Lego Movie twice with my son. Loved it! It's a very funny movie and definitely looking forward to the 2nd installment. If I'm not mistaken, the filmmakers are working on Ninjago the movie and suppose to release in Sept. 23, 2016.

Nice. I've been meaning to watch that with my son. Looks like an awesome movie

NARC surprised me. It seemed slow at first, but then showed a strong build up.

If you like this, it may be worth watching Carnahan's debut film Blood, Guts, Bullets, & Octane.

Transcendence - 6/10

Interesting concept, cool effects, but I found it a little boring at times, and thus, it failed to hold my attention throughout. The ending is rather generic and obvious. I also did not like Johnny Depp in this. He seemed awfully monotonous and one dimensional. I did enjoy Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall though, both put it some solid performances.

Narc was awesome. I've only seen it once but I really want to watch it again.

Not a huge fan of Narc. It is decent, but nothing amazing, IMO. I would give it a 7/10

Narc is like everything I want about a film. I really want a BD to come out. DVD just does not cut it for me with that film.

You can always import it like I did. Has been out in Germany on Blu-ray for years. It is Region free to. The Sound is good but the picture quality is not great, better than DVD but not by leaps and bounds.

Okay now let me ask you something, is it really region free? Because, I was always wondering about that BD. On the cover it says it's Region B and some do say it's locked in B, but others say it's region free. Since you live in UK where both are kinda mixed, maybe you can give me a hands-on proof that it runs on Region A device as well.
