What movies have you seen recently?

Okay now let me ask you something, is it really region free? Because, I was always wondering about that BD. On the cover it says it's Region B and some do say it's locked in B, but others say it's region free. Since you live in UK where both are kinda mixed, maybe you can give me a hands-on proof that it runs on Region A device as well.

I can not really give you hands-on proof since the UK and Germany are both Region:B. All I can say is that my copy(bought in 2008 ) has no specific region label. This usually means it is region free. I guess over time they could have introduced a region specific version.

So there is a region free version somewhere. Hmm... Thanks. Gotta check on it.

Good to see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes getting good reviews. I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and there was some worrying news about this one, I think a change of director or something.

Robocop 2014 was OK, but it lacked the "oh s***" moments the first had, like Murphy getting shot up, Emil getting splattered and the young executive getting destroyed by the malfunctioning ED209 in the boardroom and also lacked dark humour.

Yep, but should have been expected when one was an 18/R and the other a 12/PG-13. Teeny vs Adult, Stoker's Dracula vs Twilight, Hardcore porn vs Softcore porn, Old Boy original vs New Old Boy...etc

Believe me, I held very few high expectations for Robocop 2014. It was OK, though.

It has one moment like that when Murphy is shown what's really left.

Otherwise, they kind of traded up the fake commercials or news reports for the Novak Element, but even Novak's f-bomb was bleeped.

And they changed the director to a very good one, fortunately. There was one thing I didn't like about Cloverfield the second time I watched it, and it was that the movie's storyboard was not right for found footage film. It was consistently trying to be conventional and (if that's possible) too beautiful for a found footage film. That's when I realized Cloverfield is not as good as I thought it was, and Matt Reeves will fare much better with a more conventional script just like this one.

I don't know about that, sure it lacked the gore, but I found the scene where they showed Murphy as nothing but a head and some guts to be very stark in contrast to what the original Robocop did. The whole movie he's struggling to come to terms with what he's become. Original Robocop never came across as disturbed by being a giant robot as much. I still feel like the original is better because it strives to create more memorable characters, but it does lack that touch of drama which kind of justifies the existence of Robocop 2k14 in my book.

Yeah, that part was good. I felt slightly queasy there. They could have done more with that whole angle to emphasize Murphy's plight. Like when Murphy meets his wife again, the subject of sex could be shown in a vague PG13 way. Like "So what about... You know?" Or maybe he really wants to eat his mother's apple pie or something and he's not allowed because it gunks up the electronics and they offer him to fry the parts of his brain related to such sensory pleasures as sex/food and he can lose more humanity or live with unfulfillable desires.

But look at moments I commented on. They were violent scenes, brutal even. The one scene you mention here is pretty much the only really good scene.

For purely brutal reasons, yes, but then again, I don't find the lack of gore to be as big a deal breaker as the lack of a strong cast/characters. I did enjoy the movie as a whole though. It's not like I'm saying that's the only noteworthy scene. Besides it being a bit too flashy with the special effects, overly focused on the family, and lacking any memorable performances, it does plenty of things right. Enough for me to say it's worthy of sitting next to the original. I feel like if there were sequels to be made, they could do a much better job of it than what was previously done.

See, I do find it a deal breaker. One of the things the brutality did in the original, for me anyway, was to convey the necessity of Robocop. In the new one... it is more like they did it just because they could. I agree on the weak cast/Characters, but I do not think any actor could have made it better.. It is poorly written. It is aimed at too young an audience.

I really think this was one movie where a straight up remake was needed, scene for scene, line for line. Then they could branch off and be a bit more original & creative with the sequels.

I checked out Beyond the Black Rainbow after I saw the cool title in the Soundtrack thread and was curious about it. I couldn't make it all the way through the movie.

I wish they too the TRON: Legacy approach and do a true sequel with a new Robocop that was a successor to Murphy.

Went on a Planet of the Apes binge. Watched most of the original movie series. Gonna watch the last half of Battle of the Planet of the Apes, but I need some kind of a break. I already get the gist of what's gonna happen. Good series. Escape and Conquest are my favorites.

Sabotage - 3/10

Terrible, absolutely terrible.
The Action is Bland, and rather sparse. The acting is mediocre, which you might expect. The Plot is generic and drawn out. The writing a downright disaster, the dialogue between characters is just eye roll worthy and annoying, and the characters themselves are bland. All of it is finished off with a terribly generic and obvious ending, which is instantly forgettable.

Is Arnie going to make one decent movie post retirement ? certainly does not seem so.

For a moment I thought you were talking about this.....

Could not watch that even if I wanted to. I can not watch movies pre-80's. There are some exceptions, but I find it hard to get through them. No clue why, it just is as it is.
I don't want to hear sh!t when I don't want to watch your fancy schmancy pinky in the air British period pieces then.

Is WarGames worth a look? At first I was put off by the teen sitcom stuff, but the more I hear it, it seems like an otherwise very serious techno-thriller. Being a fan of eerie old-school technology description ala Alien, I feel like I need to watch this.

Her - 5/10

It started off decent enough, but once it got to around 60/80 minutes in I found my self feeling bored and never shook it for the remainder. It's a shame cause I thought the Idea behind the movie is a fantastic one. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a fantastic performance to.

Yes, but it might feel dated.
