What movies have you seen recently?

Finally saw the new Godzilla. Is it just me, or was this whole movie's picture filmed unnecessarily dark?

Otherwise, as a film I thought it was a good effort. I really appreciated that this was a Reboot more than a Remake and kind of a continuation and acknowledgment of the original film. I really wish more studios would do this when dusting off old film properties like with TRON: Legacy.

The weakest part of the movie to me was Ford Brody. Somehow, that character didn't do anything for me.

To be honest, in terms of a big monster rampage, I thought Cloverfield did a slightly better job when it came to characters faced with such a threat. I think what Godzilla needed was more civilian characters like that to balance the cool headed military cast.

6/10
I don't know, people complain about Brody, but I thought he did just fine and felt like they managed to bring in enough of the civilian mindset in various scenes following the wife and child. What I wanted was more scientist scenes though. Ken Watanabe is just a dreamboat. Also, the next one should obviously have more Godzilla.

You have a point. Maybe that's what was missing was having the military/government point of view, some of the civilians, but it felt like the scientist view needed a stronger presence. There was a subtle nod to this when Watanabe handed over the stop watch.

This could of been done a lot more with Cranston to :really:

Yeah, I'm not sure if it was a money issue or something but he could have used a longer role in my opinion. Having scenes with him and Watanabe inside a hospital room would have been great.

Phenomena

i havent yet found an argento film to love as a whole but he is really creative with individual sequences. the intro to this movie for instance was completely unsettling with that synth-y score and the little girl missing her bus. gave me the creeps.

looking forward to catching up on more horror films this month :)

Godzilla (2014) - 8/10 i enjoyed it better than i thought it would be from a bunch of people that were let down. I thought it did its job well. Looking forward to the sequel.

I'm not visiting this thread as much as I did and should.

I watched Solaris (1972), and now I'm watching Solaris (2002).

So, I have my doubts on Tarkovsky Solaris. It has this strange beauty, but everything else tells me that a beautiful cinematography (beautiful female lead as well, maybe) doesn't make a good film. It starts out so slow for the audience to swallow what the movie means to show, but at the end the dialogues are waaaaay too much with philosophical jargon, all the while I catch up to the basic information going through 'experimental' style of the film. Some of the interpretations of the ending made me iron out some of my questions and doubts about the style of the film (especially those B&W scenes), but I'm still not sure what the movie ultimately builds up to. It just feels like it rushes towards its destination at the last moment through some heavy-handed lines.

Soderbergh Solaris on the other hand; oh my god. I can't believe this movie is practically snubbed, forgotten, not even getting a proper Blu-ray treatment. While Tarkovsky made a somewhat flawed film that has undeniable beauty, Soderbergh made a flat-out eye/eargasm with this one. The editing is perfect. Here and there it has one of the best cross-cuts I've ever seen. The music by irreplaceable Cliff Martinez is top notch, and is used in the best possible way when it is used. Emotion is suppressed with each character and each line, yet just thrives with textures. If there's someone who doesn't know the director of both films, it would be very easy to prefer Soderbergh to Tarkovsky.

It's been a long time but I seem to remember enjoying Solaris (2002) quite a bit.

I'm kind of intrigued with the original now. Might check it out just to see what's up.

Jarhead - 7.5/10

Interesting movie about the psychological effect of war. Fairly similar to Full Metal Jacket but different enough to separate itself.

Annabelle - Can I has my 90 minutes of life back/10. Movie is terrible.

So, got bored last night and decided to watch the Conjuring. As far as Horror/supernatural movies go it was not that bad, still not amazing, but 100 times better than Annabelle. The Conjuring - 5.5/10

Wasn't Annabelle a spin-off from Conjuring? I heard she appears in the movie.

Also, I have not watched any of the October horror movies in theaters right now. The classic showings were all sold out, I thought Annabelle looked lame and god damn, Ouija just looks stupid. Although I respect it for being another board game movie in the line behind Clue, Jumanji, Zathura, and Battleship.

St. Vincent was really good.

Yeah, the tag line for Annabelle was "Before the Conjuring there was Annabelle" She does not really appear in the movie but the doll has a cameo.

Personally I am not really a horror fan. I generally find them to be lame, cheap & stupid.

Only God Forgives - Awful
Seriously, this movie was terrible. There's little to no dialogue. Lots of staring. Long drawn out scenes. I'm not sure what Gosling was injecting when he agreed to the role and what Nicolas Winding Refn was smoking when he made the movie. You think Drive had a lot of awkward staring scenes, you ain't seen nothing yet.

St. Vincent - Great
Bill Murray continues to show he's one of, if not, THE most underrated actor today. He'll get an Oscar nod for his performance but I'm not sure he'll get it. So far he's the one I'd give it to with what I've seen this year.

Nightcrawler - Great
Since I rarely watch an entire trailer nowadays, I thought Nightcrawler was a movie set in the 80's. It's not. Gyllenhaal was great in it. The movie was filled with a ton of suspense. Not "OMG who did it" suspense but building and wondering what's going to happen. The movie surprises at points. One of the better 2014 films. Gyllenhaal will get an Oscar nomination.

Out of the Furnace - Average
It was ok. The actors were great. I really liked Woody Harrelson's portrayal of DeGroat. He was menacing. You wouldn't be disappointed having watched it but I couldn't recommend you go out of your way to either.

Finally. Another person with a bit of sense. All I ever see is praise for this movie and I have no clue why. I thought it was terrible.

Nice. Nice to see some positivity for it. I for one am looking forward to seeing it.

Only God forgives the film (of same name). Not only awful, but discomfort to watch.

Mulholland Drive - Tried watching this again, ironically enough I always lose interest at the start of the best bit, the Lesbian acts.... :surprise: seems that is about as long as this movie can hold my attention:sad:

It was boring.

It was and it was not. I mean I was intrigued by what happens at the start, but it goes about uncovering it far too slowly. Another thing I found funny was the acting in the acting scenes was better than the acting for the movie.

It just bored me to death. It was an OK movie. I rated it 6/10 on IMDB but it was still boring to me and way too drawn out, like you said.

Book Of Life 8/10
great stuff by the animator Gutierrez and produced by del Toro. Cinematography /back ground illustrations are magnificent.
Feels a bit like Nightmare before Christmas but whole lot better in my.......book.

I would have rated it higher but the annoying voice of Ice Cube lowered it. They could have found a better voice than that IMO

Interstellar - 9/10 i really enjoyed it lived up to my hype. The science i got since i watch a lot of History Channel and Science Channel. MM was great and one scene really hit me almost had the tears flowing. I think Nolan did a great job one of the best sci-fi space movies in a long time. Of course there are a few flaws but take it as it is and you should enjoy it. Can not wait to see it again. And the robots were cool.

Dracula Untold - 7.5/10

I really enjoyed it. Some of the visual designs, effects were pretty cool. The story is a bit simple and somewhat cliche but at the same time it works fairly well to off-set, for the most part, the more dark tones of usual vampire/Dracula movies. Seems the casting person loves Games of Thrones as there are several actors from it in this movie. Charles Dance unfortunately has a very small role. I rather liked Luke Evans as Dracula though.

Interstellar 5/5
watched this at the imax in SF and it was easily the best movie experience I've had all year. The movie Had a great mix of drama, action, and nerdy scientific theories. My only complaint is that it may have been too sappy at times.
