What movies have you seen recently?

Yeah this has been getting pissed on in the reviews.
Too bad because a big budget Slender man movie could have been cool.
I never get scared at movies, but I don't even see anything in it that would really be scary. There was zero tension either. It was terribly squandered and horrible use of the character.

The Raid: Redemption

I enjoyed it for what it was. Some of the fight scenes were too long though.

wait till you see the final fight in the sequel its a full on 10 minute+ fight. I seen it at the movies and I can remember my whole body tingling and nearly getting teary eyed it was so good.

Then again I'm an Iko Uwais fanboy I love the style. He's getting his first hollywood movie with Mark wahlberg in it should be out in a couple weeks or so I can't wait. Hopefully they can utilise him.

Adrift: 7/10 good date night flick. Based on a true story. Some cool scenes.
Upgrade: 8/10 Great Blade Runner 2049 vibe. Fun premise and concept. Way better than I expected.

Happy Death Day - Much more entertaining than I was expecting. I would have enjoyed an R-rated cut of this more, but this made for a fun, silly, slasher movie.

Horror movies are not scary. Really have no clue how people get scared watching them.

IMO, something like Silence of the Lambs is far more scary for the simple fact that it has real chance of happening in real life.

Prisoners is another.

You likely aren't scared when watching them, but the possibility of them is scary.

Sometimes I think the Horror genre is unfairly burdened by adult audiences demanding 'Scary Films' based on their nostalgia which is silly and aggravating because they're not kids anymore so you can't really recapture that. Well, I suppose you can try by being heavily retro like STRANGER THINGS.

With that said, I do think a mature audience can be taken on a ride with different scares that do not rely on the same old Slasher film tricks or jump scares when that fails.

Well.... not Scares exactly, but walk the audience into new concepts that are disturbing or unnerving or go for the MindFvck(David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Shinya Tsukamoto).

Personally, I consider the best Horror to be very closely tied to Wonder and somewhere in between dealing with The Uknown. This last bit might were difficulty lies as what triggers a sense of Wonder in people is very subjective and it would be difficult to market. Unfortunely, I think those who hold onto their nostalgic ideas of horror are the hardest to get to be open to wonder because they see it as a distraction. They would rather just become Eli Roth gore hounds.

Maybe the movies that do manage to do this are the ones that ultimately become Cult Film favorites regardless of their initial box office success.

I think Atmosphere is most important. Most horror films are very bad at atmosphere. Take Alien for example...technically a sci-fi horror but it is the atmosphere that makes that movie so great.

Compare something like the terrible Paranormal Activity movies to something much older, like The Entity. The latter has a far better atmosphere.

Some horror movies rely on jump scares. Others use tension and build up. Others use psychology. All can be scary, to some, in their own ways.

The Unbelievers 7/10

Documentary style film following Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss during a book / speaking tour until they show up at a secular Reason Rally.

A bit slow paced, but steady. Just a little debate; mostly preaching to the choir.

I've enjoyed following this discussion including this film and reading books from both of these guys.

Yeah I don’t really find films scary anymore like I did when I was younger. The horror/thrillers I enjoy now are the ones that have good story, atmosphere, creepy feel, or just make you feel uncomfortable while watching. Some still pull off some of these well and we get a couple gems each year.

I had hoped for A Cure for Wellness, but it fumbled the ending.

Hostiles - I'm a sucker for westerns, but this has to be one of the best in the genre of the last decade or two. It's extremely heavy handed on the emotional content, and the 180 degree change that each and every main character in the movie experiences is unbelievable, but the cinematography and acting are so good they make up for it. I'd rented it on iTunes a few weeks back when it was a $1 rental special, so I was annoyed to see it's on Netflix now. After watching it, I was happy to throw some money their way. Well done movie.

I found it to be way too slow for my liking.

But best in genre the last 2 decades? Nah. No way. Two movies that instantly spring to mind is the Fantastic Assassination Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Unforgiven . Other note worthy titles include The Proposition(Australian I believe) & 3:10 to Yuma. And what about something like No Country for Old Men? Very westerny.

I also enjoyed Bone Tomahawk more than Hostiles.

I need to check that out.

Electric Dreams(1984)- 8/10. Still love this movie. Soundtrack is great and loved the cheesy syfy love story.

Watched Man of Steel and Batman v Superman again in 4K, still like Man of Steel but damn I wish they'd tone down that film grain, it takes away any real 4K look the film would have had. Still ticks me off that Batman v Superman wasted it's potential, a few minor changes here and there could have made a huge difference. I really hope Affleck sticks around as Batman for a few more movies, he's the best Bruce Wayne I think we've ever had.

I would also add True Grit and Django Unchained to that list. I really liked those recent westerns too.

Time Trap: 8/10 for a low-budget, cheesy, film with mediocre-bad acting. But the premise and plot were unexpected!

Incident in a Ghostland: 8/10 If you like horror, watch this. Don't read any reviews.

I enjoyed both too...but wouldn't call either close to best in class for the genre.

Same goes for that Tarantino one(for got the name)...was it Hateful Eight?.
