HANNIBAL is also very good for serious psychological horror. I'm really amazed something this effed up and bloody was on NBC.
All 3 Seasons are currently included with Amazon Prime.
I do think some of it is way over the top in terms of it being a serial killer of the week show and some of the killers do crazy displays of their victims. The production is maybe a little to creatively indulgent sometimes, but that is a nitpick.
The show absolutely shines though with Mads Mikkelson as Hannibal Lecter. It's disturbing AF or like watching The Food Network from Hell. Lawrence Fishburn is also very good in this show as Crawford.
Mads' performance for this character is kind of unnerving and he likes using his training in psychology to manipulate people or make his patients worse rather than better(that someone explains why there are so many killers running amok lol). He rarely if ever shows malice to anyone even when plotting how to kill them. The exception to that is sort of when he thinks anyone has been rude. That just annoys him so much they get moved up on the Menu list.
I would recommend at least seeing the movie The Silence of the Lambs and maybe the sequel HANNIBAL. Then watch this TV show as a long running prequel. That is optional though because this is such a strong stand alone show, but you'll catch some references from the films. You could maybe enjoy this just as much watching the show first and then the movies.
