Kind of a general question, I know, but how would you describe the types of games you like and dislike? I'm thinking in terms of game genres or types, but use whatever descriptors you like.

Here's my list.

Likes:
  • Games with interesting stories and characters.
  • Western RPGs, particularly open-world ones that feature a lot of exploration/discovery.
  • Action-adventure games that put me in a exotic location or interesting world (e.g., Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Uncharted).
  • Unusual games (e.g., Deadly Premonition).
  • An occasional shooter.
  • Open-world games, especially when the world feels alien.
  • Games that can elicit an emotional reaction from me (besides just frustration or amusement).

Dislikes:
  • Survival horror games (don't like being scared)
  • Online competitive shooters like CoD and Halo
  • Games with a dark, oppressive atmosphere/visuals (e.g., Bloodborne, lots of military shooters)
  • Fighting games
  • JRPGs, especially those with turn-based fighting mechanics
  • Puzzle and strategy games (I like occasional puzzles, but I don't want a whole game of them)
  • Most racing games, although I like some arcadey racers (e.g., Burnout)

Here's what kind of games I like.

  • Story-driven games. Games that have consequences, various story paths, death, influence, relationships all driven by your decisions. Not many games in this kind of genre that I can think of other than Quantic games and otome visual novel games. Frozen Essence, Second Reproduction, Dysfunctional Systems. Or even Knights of the Old Republic dialogue system. And also Life is Strange.

  • Games with good learning curves and challenging, masterful gameplay. Games like Demon's Souls, Dustforce, Cave Story, Attack on Titan Tribute Game, Blazblue, Dishwasher, Rainblood Chronicles, Overgrowth, Rogue Legacy.

  • Unique game types. Games like the Atelier games on PS3 or Recettear: A Item Shop's Tale and Long Live The Queen on Steam for PC and Mac. Twisted Shadow Planet. Attack on Titan Tribute Game. FEZ. Portal. Madness Returns.

  • Classic or Unique JRPG games. Like Chantelise, Trails in the Sky, Pier Solar, Last Story, Star Ocean, Resonance of Fate. Tales games.

  • Games like tons of character customization, mostly regarding clothing. Resonance of Fate let you dress up the characters with a lot of purchasable clothing which was really nice. And I plan to get Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns largely because of the long list of outfits she has, especially the Yuna outfit. But I can't think of any other games that really do this.

  • Horror/scary games. Especially if surround sound is supported. Put on some surround sound headphones, and it really immerses you and makes it ten times scarier.

The only genres I don't like almost universally are rail shooters, shmups and sports. It's funny, because I'm a very big sports person, but simulating the sport just doesn't appeal to me.

I only tend to dislike sports games and other then that I am open. I do get shooter fatigue at times but I am always pulled back in.

Action/Adventure games. Zelda series,Darksiders and Fable
2D Platformers
3D platformers
Open world Action/Rpg's in a Science fiction setting
FPA, Metroid Prime, Bioshock and of course Half-Life
Loved the Burnout series before Paradise killed it

Dont really have any dislikes, some games don't appeal or click with me right off but for the most part I can find something in every genre that I may like or not :p

Dislike
Bethesda, because all their games run like s***, even the good ones.

I think it's easier to just put in my dislikes. For me, it'd have to be games that require me to gather resources. I like Don't Starve Together though. It's usually pretty boring for me personally. It's no limited to survival games either, any RPG or whatever genre that makes me go out of my way to collect materials through out the whole game tends to be seen as a bit meh to me. Sure it can be done well, but I rarely feel like it's done fun. It's part of the reason why I can never get too far in many strategy and simulation games. Unless the process is simplified, it's usually a no go for me. I liked it in Brutal Legend where you had to play a quick tune to summon a fan booth and that would automatically collect resources for you. You'd then fight over those booths, trying to destroy enemy booths, and have as many set-up as you could.

Also, I'm usually not too big into anime. Although I think some styles can translate well to 3D, I usually prefer to not have to look at it.

That about does it for me for the most part. Dark, girtty, modern military, cartoon, completely abstract, fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. I love those settings, and styles along with way too many genres to count.

I don't dislike any genre really. However, there're some things with in genres that I do not like, such as..

Free 2 play
Predominately CO-OP games
Top Down RPGs( Diablo)

If I listed my favourite genres it would look a little like...

3rd Person action & adventure games.
Racing games(both Sim & Arcade)
RPG's--mainly western.

I actually enjoy pretty much every genre. Games like Zelda, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Forza/GT/Burnout pre-paradise Being my favorite types. I guess I like adventure/exploration/Racing most.

My dislikes are aspects that I feel ruin a game.

-FPS where the guns are not satisfying to shoot people with.
-Racing games where the car feel is not good. Hi NFS Shift, that Capcom racing game on he PS2 that the name escapes me that I wanted to love but the cars handled like s***.
-RPGs that have bad pacing like no towns to take a break in, hi FFXIII.
-Double lottery loot systems. Hi PSU and Destiny pre-patch.
-Games that try and force me on their schedule/don't respect my time; and have their non-existent story on cards on a website and trite dialogue that only a seven year old will find interesting. Then try and insult players intelligence and tell people its their story and their character will be unique and every the gun you get will have a story of how you got it - yeah from the f***ing RNG gods - oh and then make me suffer long winded non-sencical blog posts about stupid PvP events(I only care about PvE for Destiny)/and how difficult it is to change an ordered logic bug(I know its not 4+ month hard to fix the ordering heavy ammo bug while they fixed "exploits(bugs that were beneficial to the player)" that were more logically difficult much, much quicker. f*** you Bungie.

Like: Multiplayer games that give the player meaningful options when not in direct confrontation with the opposing player/team.
Dislike: Just about all single player games.

Examples: Splinter Cell's Spies vs. Mercs, Dota 2, StarCraft 2, what I envision a finished DayZ could become...hopefully Evolve when it comes out next week.
