Why can't we make new movies accessible from home?

I can't get to a theater right now. I have a 6 month old baby and it's just not possible until he gets older and can be babysat. I am sick of trying to avoid spoilers for Star Wars and do not want to pirate a cam video. I just want to watch the movie at home when the baby is sleeping. I could pause it and go help my wife with him and Disney could make a profit still. I would pay a premium for this service, like at least $20.

Do the theater corporations have such a tight grip on the distributors where this just cannot happen yet? What do you think and would you pay a premium for such a service?

Piracy. Allowing in the home viewing would make it infinitely easier to pirate movies. There was a service that offered it but not sure if the do anymore. It was something like $400 per movie and a crapload upfront.

Edit: $40,000 for equipment and first 10 movies and $500 per rental after.

It would also totally kill theaters and hurt the movie industry. Hitting theaters first is a big money maker for companies. The cost of these blockbuster movies can be handled because the first few weeks in the box office are good as long as the movie isn't terrible.

Theaters are also getting a lot better now too. With assigned seats and comfy chairs, there's no more being squished into a tiny space.

You can't get away for 2 hours later at night by yourself when the little one is sleeping? I know a baby is a major commitment, but you need to scrape a little time to yourself or you'll go nuts.

I'd be up for it. Not for those prices in PVs post though.

Yeah, people would lose jobs. The popcorn and candy business would go under. Piracy would go through the roof. There's lots of reasons why you can't just stream a new movie at home. Like anything else, it's all about the money.

I just wait for most movies to come out on video. Normally that's not an issue, except for movies like Star Wars where there are major spoiler issues.
Unless you are worried about spoilers, you really don't need to go to a theater, assuming your home theater setup is solid (and I'd guess most are). I prefer my home sound system to most theaters. Most are too loud and too bassy. I remember seeing the last Batman movie in theaters and I could barely understand chunks of the dialog. Watching it on BluRay and everything was crystal clear.

Ask (tell/threaten etc.) your partner to look after the baby for a bit. Mine is almost 10 months but I get out a bit.

My wife wants to see it too and would resent me a bit if I went without her. If it is still out for my Birthday in a couple weeks her Mother is going to come over and watch him while we do a dinner and a movie. Just a pain in the butt organizing that stuff. Direct to video please so I can watch it at home on 65" plasma and 7.1 surround sound with pause and rewind!

I hear that, I wanted to go without my wife (as it was pretty easy to find a single seat even right after release, but 2 in a row was tough). She put the kibosh on that though. (by threatening to put the kibash on my skull).

I bet your 7.1 sound system is better than what is in most theaters.

I very rarely get to a movie anymore. I work two jobs and have a kid. I honestly don't mind waiting around for movies to come out on Blu-Ray or on demand. I definitely prefer watching a movie in my home versus going to a theatre. At this point I'm the same with sports as well. Guess I'm becoming a home-body in my old age.

I'd imagine that these type of things for major movie premieres like Star Wars would drive up the prices for streaming services since Disney would be charging an arm and a leg for guys like Netflix and Hulu.

evolve or die, putting people out of work is never a good reason to stifle advancement in technology. I would love to have day one movies at home, between my 4K TV 5.1 surround sound system and free in home beer i would never set foot in a theater again...

A lot of cinemas here have the "Mums and Bubs" session of movies. They're usually on during the mornings, and Im not sure if it includes R rated stuff, but its an outing, and its half price!

I f***ing dislike the movies but wife likes them and also likes to waste money on that f***ing over priced popcorn. I hate the fact I got to go to a movie on a set time stand in f***ing line stand in line again to get f***ing over priced popcorn and if I got to piss I can't pause the movie.

We tried to go see zootopia last weekend got there 20 mins for start f***ing line up to get tickets and line for popcorn was long as s***. we had a movie pass we got as a gift 2 gen admissions and 2 popcorn and 2 drunk. I just said ok by time you get popcorn movie will be already playing so we just left.

She got pissy with me and said well I want to see the movie you could stand in line for popcorn. to me that is f***ing dumb I'm not wasting a ticket and miss some of the movie. I also refuse to wait in line for f***ing over priced popcorn. s*** they make you pay extra for butter on the s*** now.

I got a 50 inch TV or 55 I forget the size a nice sound system nice ass power recliners and a full popcorn machine with movie style popcorn packs.

I don't mind going to the movies for a movie I really want to see or if it's cheap.

I'll post mt HT in here later for fun.
