I'm considering getting my sons a Wii U at Christmas. I know they are going to ask for one.

So should I be looking for any particular console features? They only want to play the first party exclusives. We already own a 360/Xbox One.

Advice?

The 8GB Wii U(white console) would be fine if you're just playing first party exclusives and not downloading games. I would also suggest getting a Wii U Pro controller. They might like using it more than the gamepad.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I may just go with the 8 GB. I'm not going to be downloading anything. It's gotta be cheap now.

There was a Wind Waker bundle, right? If I were going to buy a WiiU I'd get that one.

Is the 8GB version even available anymore? Just checked Best Buy and they don't list it. Right now bundles on there include Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, and Splatoon. I'd vote for Super Mario since they can play it co-op. Pro controller is a great addition as well.

I don't see it on Amazon either.

Out of the the ones you listed there I'd probably vote Mario Kart for kids. If I were getting it for myself I'd probably do Super Mario but I've also heard that Splatoon is pretty good.

Well Mario Kart should be on the buy list as well anyways. I didn't realize but the Super Mario bundle comes with Nintendo Land as well so two games!!!! Splatoon is great as well from what little I played. But that's the beauty, it's a great pick up and play game whenever you feel like it. And I feel like a god "killing" little kids left and right. At least until the Japanese show up.

Haha. Ok guys so 8 GB is out it would seem. Is the Wii U a dead console now?
Isn't Nitty(lol) releasing a new console next year? My sons definitely have some Wii U titles they want. I wonder if the Wii U games will be backward compatible with the new console.

It's tough to say for certain if they will be but there's probably a chance they will be I'd day looking at Nintendos history with bc.

I think if you need to go into this with an assumption that whatever NX is it won't be BC. If it turns out it is, consider that a bonus.

The Wii U is a 'dead console' as far as future support and releases after next year. There are still two big marquee releases to come in Zelda and Star Fox, but the bulk of its available library is what you should base a purchasing decision on.

It's a real shame Minecraft never made it to Wii U, seems a perfect fit.

Well, with what the both of you said I may just wait. At this point, I'd only be getting it for the exclusives. So:

Mario Kart 8
Super Mario Bros Wii U(?)
Super Smash Bros Wii U
Mario Maker

Mario Maker does look awesome though, I've been watching it a bit on Twitch.

If i recall correctly from the rumors I've seen for the NX, there is no optical drive, so unless they are digital, and Ninty provides a solid online infrastructure, BC will be out. You might get the privilege of buying them again, though.

I was going to get a Wii U for the new Fatal Frame, but then I found out it was digital only. I am not getting screwed by Nintendo because I decide to risk the dangers of touching anything involving their terrifying network services. That and the SD card wouldn't hold the game even if I download it.

I picked up the Wii U bundle with Smash Bros & Splatoon yesterday at Walmart for $250. A lot of people were buying the console. Since my original post my sons have let me know about several addition titles they want so we'll get plenty of use out of the system.

Great choice. Not sure how old they are but they should get a nice little rivalry going in Smash Bros.

Enjoy it's a great system. I did have to buy an external HDD.

Thanks guys. I'm sure they'll love it. I was thinking I might need to get a hard drive.

My guys are 10 and 12 so all three of us will be battling in Smash! We played a lot of Brawl and had fun.

I have a copy of Resident Evil 4 Wii that I haven't played. Can you play that on the Gamepad screen?
