WipEout Omega Collection is releasing 6/6/17.

  • All content from 3 games: WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury, and WipEout 2048
  • 1080p on PS4, dynamic 4K on PS4Pro; all at 60FPS
  • $40
  • All textures reworked plus a host of improved graphical effects
  • HDR "massively improves" contrast
  • All sound effect remastered, original soundtrack plus new music
  • Career mode + customizable mode
  • Split screen MP, online MP

WipEout was one of the first console games I played, back on the PS1 in 1999, if memory serves. I predict I will buy this game, crash repeatedly, and wonder where all my reflexes went.

I got HD/Fury during the PSN outage back in... 2011? Played through the first three race groups or whatever and enjoyed it but didn't touched it again until a couple weeks ago. Enjoying the game but wonder if I should just keep playing that or wait for this. Kind of want to play what I have to get more trophies out of it, but the new one sure does look nice as hell.

Between Crash Bandicoot trilogy and the WipEout trilogy, June is going to be a big nostalgia month for PS owners. Not sure how much I'll partake, because there are more current releases to get caught up on (still haven't gotten to Tomb Raider or Uncharted yet). I like the throwbacks to earlier gaming styles -- that's a part of why I loved Ratchet & Clank -- but I'm not as eager for a full platformer and racing game as I was for R & C.

Welcome back Andy, missed ya!

Thanks, Oblong. :) Saw your post in the Obscure Games thread. I appreciate your efforts. I'll probably give up the ghost on that thread, though, because the forum isn't big enough to support discussion of those sorts of games. Besides, I'm too busy with the big, non-obscure games right now.

That Fast game on Switch kind of has my hover racer needs covered. But Wipeout collection looks nice.

Europe always get the good stuffs when it comes to Collector's Edition. I would have pre-ordered it immediately if we got it too. Lucky bastards.

Cool idea that.

The soundtracks to these games always did it for me.

Why was it spelled with a E?

Here's what I could find on that.

"And of course there's the capitalised E in WipEout. The legend goes it stood for the drug, ecstasy, top of politicians' hit list at the time. Was it deliberate?

"I've heard so many different explanations for this," Burcombe says. "It wasn't the big E as in E as in ecstasy. It was just the way that font had been designed. You wouldn't have been able to squish an E into that height of font. Every other letter in it would fit in a horizontal bar, which is effectively what it is.

"Maybe The Designers Republic wanted to put a big E in the middle to reference drugs culture. That was not my understanding of it at all."

"Absolutely intentional, obviously," Thompson says with a smile.

"Whatever the truth, WipEout was reaching people other games couldn't. Its logo was in clubs, festivals and style magazines. "It was something fresh on the market," Burcombe says. "This tying together of club culture and gaming, people say it made gaming cool and acceptable in a different field."

"It was also one of the first games to feature licensed music. WipEout's soundtrack is a who's who of British dance acts, including Orbital, Leftfield, New Order and Chemical Brothers. Looking back it all makes perfect sense - a no-brainer as the marketers might have said - but snagging the tracks was a hard job at first.

"I had my own shopping list because I was a bit of a raver in those days," Burcombe says, "and of course none of it was anything anyone had heard of..."

Wow... What weaksauce of a ost is this!? House, trance and dance... No edge What so ever!

No Aphex Twin, fsol,Autechre or squarepusher... Not even Orbital or Cold Storage...

Good thing we can play our own stuff!

Running 84% on Metacritic after 23 reviews. So, looking solid.

Sample review comments:

"Despite its undoubted quality, our chief frustration remains the fact that this isn't a new entry in the series, rather it's more of a retrospective look back at its most recent history. [....]

"Nevertheless, what's here is extensive, and has been updated for PlayStation 4 to an impressive extent, to the point where the games contained herein still feel as fresh as they did when they first launched back in the day. If you're an existing fan, the mid-tier pricing feels about right for what's here, and it's clear that a lot of care and attention has gone into creating this updated collection. On the other hand, if you've never played Wipeout before and you like aggressive, pulsating high-speed action, you won't find anything out there better than this."

"As mentioned few games have this vibe today, and on top of that, few ever did it as well as WipEout. It’s fair to say that, aside from small tweaks here and there, the three iterations don’t feel wildly different – it’s not like the series was ever overly experimental once it found its format – but what it sets out to do it does very well. There’s every chance this is the start of what would more than likely be a welcomed comeback.

"For those that do invest, you’re getting a hell of a lot of content, too, as you’d expect from three games in one. With well over 60 courses it’s not like you’ll be lacking in options, and there’s also a tremendous amount of vehicles as well as the genuinely ‘I’m going to kick your ass’ challenge. Moving up a level is no easy feat – hence why I’m stating it again – and if you’re worried the appeal may be over as quick as it begun there’s no need. You’ll be chipping away at this for months."

"WipEout Omega Collection is a remaster that any fan is going to go loopy over, and there’s a high possibility it'll find a new audience, too. A very slick and well-designed update."

Play UC4 first, it's a much better game IMO. TR is good but it's not as good as the TR reboot that came before it and it's definitely not as good as UC4.

I picked this up last night and played a couple of races and it's fun, I probably should have waited though because I'm still playing Injustice 2 a lot lol.

Just added Some Orbital and FSOL to The mix...

I had to go trough No less than 32 different versions of Papa New Guinea, to find The perfect one...

Obsessive much? Ya a little.. I take music quite seriously and to me Wipeout's music is at least 50% of The experience....

When The right track is playing and the events in a race/zone trial unfold and everything just mix, it takes The whole experience to another level...

And thus i have compiled The most classic groundbreaking,Atmosphere filling tracks in the history of Electronic music for the last 30 years together for one mindf***er of a soundtrack.

Edit.. I still can't get how weak The official OST is...

To (almost) Quote Mr T: I pity The fool Who have to listen to that s***e while playing The games

Just started UC4 last night. I wanted to get to it before E3 (to avoid spoilers when they talk about the DLC), but I didn't quite get around to it in time. I think I'll enjoy Tomb Raider if I wait a while to play it. I just finished Horizon, and I enjoyed that so much, and liked Aloy so much, that I knew Lara would suffer by comparison (two woman-with-a-bow-and-arrow games in a row, hard to not compare them). I'll enjoy that more if I save it for later.

That sounds good. I've never bothered to try to construct a custom soundtrack for my games, but maybe I should.

Yeah TR isn't a bad game at all it's good it just doesn't live up to the previous game or UC4 IMO.

You should try it! With the right music and Wipeout, it's a completely New experience!
I don't know if you are into Electronic music or not, but Imo Wipeout and Electronic music go hand in hand.... No Other genre captures and matches Wipeout's Futuristic setting and intensity imo.

It has to be The right kind though... Swedish House mafia and addiktion and the like? Give me a f***ing break!

Insanely glowing impressions / tech review video from Digital Foundry. I wasn't even considering this game, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up buying it before the week (or day) is over now.

I just watched the above video, wow. I'm watching it on my work monitor at 1080p but that's an insanely clean image. The backlog is serious so I'll try and wait for a later date. But its going to be hard.

Glad to hear it's full downsampling.

I liked Lara better compared to Aloy. Lara is much hotter too. That isn't to say that I wouldn't enjoy a glory hole or cowgirl with Aloy. :hehe:
