Microsoft has unveiled its initial work on the next version of the Windows operating system, calling it Windows 10. Revealed during a press event in downtown San Francisco, the new OS is designed to run across a wide range of machines, including everything from tiny “internet of things” devices in business offices to tablets, laptops, […]

Why not call it Windows One if we are gonna fail at counting. :D The start menu still needs to make it to 8.1 users as free upgrade tho, not exclusive to W10.

They need to just not confuse consumers and call it Windows 9, or whatever version of Windows they are on. Oh, and scrap the entire windows code and start from scratch...make is small, tight, fast and robust. It's beyond bloated.

Yeah, don't get why it's called Windows 10. I wonder if it's to rival Apple, since they name their OS, OSX. I dunno. That's just a shallow guess.

It's not going to confuse customers in the way people are thinking. It's gonna make people think that they have an old ass outdated computer and they missed an entire operating system's life cycle. Invest in Intel, PC sales bout to go bop bop.

Yeah no, writing a operating system from scratch that is as feature complete as windows and works on all the different machines would take far longer then what its worth.

I didn't even think about this.

But I will add that to my imagination when thinking of the meeting they had to finalize calling it 10.

other reasons: avoid any confusion with windows 95, windows 98.
catch up to Apple in the eyes of stupid people who would think a product is superior because it's got a higher numbered version (aka no Xbox 2 or Xbox 3)

Although I think Windows One would have been cool.

I might jump on board this next year and build a new HTPC, get a Windows phone, get a Windows tablet.

Or I probably won't, keep using what I have that works fine, save money.

According to something I read (salt grains) from a supposed MS dev is the reason for skipping 9 is due to avoid issues with third-party scripts or programs that just mention 'Windows 9' as a catch all for 95 or 98. So instead of worrying about any issues with that they just skipped it.

Microsoft should call it Windows: The Final Frontier.

MS can't name devices or software for s***, so this would be fitting.
