I disagree. The S was going for $189 this BF, and I do know that Black Friday and standard retail prices will be different. I still see no reason that a disc-less redesign of the S spec could not easily be below $100 within a year or two.

They could also potentially just build the spec right into other devices, such as Surface Pad.

Now the surface pad I agree with. I'd love to see the XB1 final form become a tablet. Just to f*** with Nintendo.

Will IPhones and Android phones have enough power to play AAA games...scaled even, in a few years? What about storage?

I believe the #1 device used to watch Game of Thrones was phones.

Would Netflix have anywhere close to the same base if it required more advanced hardware to run or a dedicated device.

I prefer local hardware as well but that’s due to the current environment. If technology continues to advance the way that’s projected, bandwidth and latency issues won’t be issues when it comes to streaming gaming in a few years. At that point, it’s opens the market to an entirely new set of consumers.
Netflix debuted on the PC exclusively. Later, there was an app for Xbox 360, which was a console exclusive for at least a year, I think. It was certainly not on all devices overnight. It took them years to do that.

We may not be there yet with Xbox power on phones, but we aren't there yet with streaming, either. I see Moore's Law still working a lot more steadily than whatever broadband service roadmap that is happening.

I love how panicked people can get every time Microsoft tries to do something big. The more crazy responses I see, the more I realize that they are on to something with this.

Oh, nowhere do I envision them streaming Xbox games in the next 10 years. There is seriously no need, imo. I think that they will keep selling Xboxes for the foreseeable future. The S will be super-duper cheap very soon...like under $100 cheap. Bank on it. Notice that the hardware is no longer fixed, but two sets of targets... could even go portable... or to another manufacturer. It really doesn't matter as much as some think.
The panic is from people who don't like seeing MS do well and try something new.

It's funny how an anti-MS guy doesn't like that they are big, profitable and has a stigma of being a money hoarding corporation. C'mon MS, be more like "for the players". MS has done a lot for Xbox to be more gamer friendly... Game Pass, EA Access, BC, X enhanced games, Home Sharing, external HDD access 6 months after launch, Play Anywhere, and some other stuff I've forgot.

MS decides to add more value by giving away first party MS games to Game Pass subscribers and suddenly those same gamers don't like it as the value is now too good. Now they all transform into accountants and don't think it's a good idea for MS to forego $60 games as Game Pass doesn't look like it should be able to cover the sales.

LOL.

Notice how the majority of critics of Game Pass don't come from Xbox gamers.

Yeah, I'm sure they would have a hit on their hands, too. Nintendo showed us how to do the dock and give different control methods... If Microsoft could scale Xbox to Surface, I really think people would buy it because it would actually be three products in one. A tablet, a portable game device, and a console.

Point is I believe Microsoft has a plan based on where they believe technology is going and what the environment will be 5 and 10 years from now. Netflix was quite a different animal before it launched on Xbox. That was a very big deal even though Xbox makes up a small portion of where people stream Netflix today.

I see Microsoft offering both streaming options and local options in the near future. My bet is Xbox Live will be used to allow streaming anywhere. It won’t be 100% streaming anytime soon but it doesn’t have to be. Just offer it as an option. Allow people to stream through the Switch or their phones when they don’t have their Xbox. Take your Switch or underpowered Windows 10 PC to lunch at Panera and play a mission of Sea of Thieves during lunch break over Wi-Fi.

So who here actually subscribes?

I did with the promo last month. I was originally going to cancel but I’ll let it keep renewing now. Only a couple months till Sea of Thieves and there’s some stuff I don’t own in there.

So who here actually subscribes?

I do, but I can see the lack of appeal as well. I subscribe because there were several titles I had wanted to play but too cheap to buy them. Now I have my kids using the service more than me to play some of the indie titles, and some of the older games they never played. With the advent of the new titles coming, it adds to my value, but I can see running out of games to try out before too long. Then it will come down to the newer games and how often they come to the service.

Overall, really the only real reason to get the service right now is if the library appeals to you. If it doesn't, wait.

This service is and will be used by an extreme minority. It's great to have as an option but from what I have read over the years, gamers want to own their games.

Looking at the current library it's not that great and it's filled with Xbox 360 titles.

Outside of collectors, gamers who want to own their games do so to resell them and buy more games. This seems more economical than that.

Agree...I only buy games so I can recoup the money spent. I'd rather own them digital for many reasons but even then I "own" over 300 games now due to GWG and game sales. YUGE backlog :). For MS 1st party games, yes more economical. I went through all the games and listed out 30 that myself and my son wanted to play. He's been begging me to buy Terraria and that's $20 full price...2 months of game pass right there. So, I'm signing up for the 14-day free trial before the weekend so he can start playing that. Since we are moving into March, I'll likely just keep subscribed for SoT and go from there....I'm sure I'll be playing SoT for a few months and then comes Crackdown, FH4 and SoD2, etc. I'll probably cancel during my summer vaca and re-up when I return.

I don't buy many games anymore and since games now require installs and I can can Home Share, I now do digital.

But before this, I bought discs on deal and resold them for around $25.

But if you're a collector with lots of discs, you can surely make some good money down the line if you have obscure games. They might not be worth much now, but give it 10 years and suddenly they go for $50.

This stuff is way underrated with kids. A lot of those games that seem like nothing are captivating to the kids.

I kept my Game Pass after the announcement and have been pleasantly surprised by some of the stuff I’m playing. Stuff that seems old to me or outdated because it’s not the newest version is gold to the kids. Wish I had a Game Pass equivalent as a gaming kid in my household. Instead I had no choice but to slaughter the few games I owned...like learn how to beat Castlevania 1 or Ninja Gaiden without dying.

We had the Sega Channel which was kind of like an early Game Pass.

Decided to try Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition. For a remastered version, the frame rate is janky as hell.

Yeah, nothing like the good old days where you got maybe one or 2 games a year if that and just had to play the f*ck out of them. I bought my son a switch and 9 games for the holidays...got most of them on sale or with GCU+rewards certs so didn't pay near full price but still. Even with all of the GWG games I have, there are not a ton that my son is interested in or can play because of rating. I get a cool game and he's bummed out cuz he can't play it. With the XGP, there looks to be a good amount of all kinds of games so think he'll be much happier overall with that selection and we'll buy some occasional must haves. I just started the trial and downloading games now. I am excite...especially for the 1st party stuff for $10/mo.
