Resetera just went 6 pages in 20 minutes. The only negative mentioned is that MS is free to remove games from Gamepass whenever they see fit. Though some say their first party titles stay in gamepass always. They also said only 2 games have been removed since the inception, one of which is WWE2K16, which was replaced with WWE2K17.

The deal is amazing, but I really prefer to own the games.

But if your a gamepass member don't you get a discount price on the game you want to keep?

Thats correct. Personally i dont mind the idea of EA access and Gamepass...but by the time the games show up there, they're usually below $15 anyway so i could pay $10 or spend $15 and own it outright.

This is a $60 day and date value multiple times a year. If/when they move it out of rotation....it'll be 1/4 of the original rrp.

If anything this will bolster the communities of MS 1st party games ....and what sells more then games with strong communities and word of mouth?

The only acceptable answers are: "Yes" and "f*** yes."

Yeah you do. So let's look at this particular scenario. Let's say that I want to buy all three of the games. State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3.

Normally that would cost me $189.90 with tax, buying them day one on Xbox Live. Now let's look at buying it via Game Pass.

$120.00 for one year
3 games at $60 each, less the 20% discount = $151.92 with tax

That is $271.92 vs. $189.90, a difference of $82.02 (I don't know if there is tax on the Gameplass subscription).

That means I would spend $82.02 a year to play the rest of the games available on GamePass, and of course, I would still want to buy them. 20% off of $60 is $12.00. $82.02 divided by $12.00 is $6.83. I would need to buy 7 more games in order to make back the $82.02 just to break even. Keep in mind, that is with my desire to own the game. Not just rent/play it. There are 164 games in the service right now, none of which I want or I already own them.

This is a great deal for someone who wants to be one and done with a game and never own it.

I think it's brilliant value, and I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but why?

All that money they'd make off day 1 sales...

Either way, good work MS!

If you just bought your Xbox now, it's an amazing deal.

If Xbox Live had 40,000,000 active users and only 10% maintained a Game Pass subscription, that's nearly $40,000,000 monthly.

They had to make this move if they wanted the service to be taken seriously. Glad to see it. I’ll definitely considering buying a months pass when some of the exclusive games come out.

I figure they figure they can generate more actual 'sales' on the long run with larger communities. GTA, Rocket League, Minecraft. PUBG. Their prices drop and go straight back up again...people keep buying.

I feel better about Crackdown 3 now.

Two titles in the Xbox Game Pass library will be removed from the catalog at the end of the month. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and WWE 2K16 will exit the catalog on January 31. As explained in this official Xbox Game Pass FAQ, you will lose access to both games come the end of the month, so you may want to play as much as you can.

The Phantom Pain launched into Game Pass on November 1, so when it leaves on January 31, it will have been in the catalog for three months. For what it's worth, Microsoft said from the beginning that The Phantom Pain would be removed on January 31, so this was no surprise. Further still, Microsoft sent an Xbox Live message to Game Pass subscribers last week informing them that The Phantom Pain (and WWE 2K16) would be removed from the library on January 31.

WWE 2K16 had been in the Game Pass library since the service launched in May 2017. The good news for WWE fans is that WWE 2K17 is among the additions to the Xbox Game Pass library for February--you can see February's full lineup here.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is also in the Xbox Game Pass catalog, though it is not immediately clear if it, too, is going away on January 31. We'll report back with more details when they are made available.

Sega was way ahead of their time with Sega Channel

If you wanted to be accurate PS Plus would be before EA Access

Looks like this, if popular, could really throw off places like NPD, making them a thing of the past.

smart move, gives games like sea of thives a chance to be really succesfull. games like that need high player count from start.

plus 1 sub for me.

I remember a few people on here a long time ago talking about the possibility of Crackdown/Sea of Thieves' launching on Game Pass.

Touche.

Since I’m in on Sea of Thieves so getting game pass seems like common sense thing to get. I’m down with a service that gets me all of MS’s first party for $10 a month. I’m sure they did the math. The whales who buy in will probably save money while they will get a ton of casuals who probably average less than 2 full priced games a year from them. That’s pretty cool I don’t have to research out games from them anymore. It’s there and if you like then great. It pretty much eliminates buyer remorse also. Oh Crackdown sucks.....just move on to another.

So, this is really interesting. As somebody who couldn't give a sh*t less about owning (majority of games I play are either on disc and traded in when done or GWG freebies/super sale digital games). With this service I'd likely only buy hotly anticipated 3rd party games (likely 3 or 4 per year). This is a big f'ing hell yes for me. Was looking at buying all 4 (more?) MS first party titles this year so this saves me quite a bit. If I really want to own the title, I can always buy when it's on super sale for $20 or cheaper. The bonus is that you don't have to pay for it for the full year either...only when you really want to play either first party games or other games on the service.

Big questions:
  1. Does this change Microsoft's first party strategy moving forward? Like Netflix, will they be willing to invest a s***-ton of $$$ into creating new content for the "platform" instead of being so risk averse with new IP? I imagine overall subscriber numbers will drive but I think they need to invest a ton of $$$ initially into first party to drive this (chicken and egg scenario).
  2. Does the "sharing" model apply to XGP games as well? Reason I ask is that most games with a multiplayer component moving forward, I actually would buy digitally as it would get me "2" copies of the game (one on home Xbox and one on Xbox signed in with buying account). If this is maintained, again, will save me lots of $$$.
  3. Does MS keep XGP on Microsoft rewards? Right now I can get 3 months for 17,000 credits which is roughly 2 months of credits completing all daily goals.
I already get free year of Live from MS Rewards and potentially free game pass as well but even if I had to pay for it, it would be worth it. I'll sub when SoT hits in March! In the meantime, need to kill my backlog!

One thing of note in a previous interview (cant remember if it was Phil or Aaron) they said after games go free on GWG, they tend to sell better afterwards anyway despite being free the week before.

Imagine this in 10 years where its 1000 games and some poor accountant has to divide up the $9.99 every month.

"Ok. Activision you get 14 cents for Call of Duty: Back in the habit. 9 people played Sonic adventure plus 4 copies of jet set radio future nets Square-Enix-Sega is 42 yen. Ubisoft saw a spike in the sales of The Ezio collection so thats .25 Euros"
