"We’re big believers in that software platform and the devices that will enable that. Absolutely. [But] we’re focused a lot more on the software side of that right now. When I think about immersive worlds and I think about the connection of a player and community, that’s something that’s very high on our investment list.

I think that the hardware innovation that’s happening is great and it’s an important enabler, [but] right now I’m deciding to stay more in the software side of that enablement. I believe it will scale better in the long run."

“And you know, I applaud what Sony‘s doing, I applaud what Oculus is doing, what Valve has done. I mean, there’s a lot of good players out there that have done some amazing VR work."

If they continue releasing games for like oculus and said games make sense then more power to them. Would love to see either forza games in vr with the power of pc/Mac now

Smart move, it's expensive and is still really a niche product, if it were up to me Sony wouldn't be doing it either and the resources that go to that would be going into other things but I guess they figure it's an experience worth offering even if it doesn't make a ton of money.

Sony shut down their vr studio a while ago

I’m glad they don’t but like others said, enable support for existing. Maybe it’s more involved than we think though 🤷‍♂️

All I know is, when I spend any time playing anything in VR I get super sick to my stomach. I never get motion sickness or anything else similar, but put a VR headset on me and I feel really off in a very short time. I'd love to get into it, but it isn't exactly fun or relaxing. I've tried to get used to it but it never really goes away. I can't imagine I'm the only one.

They still have studios working on VR projects, they aren't going to release VR hardware and not make games for it lol. The fact that they are spending a ton of money on a new VR set up is silly to me but I have never tried their old one, maybe trying it out will change my mind some day but I'm not all that excited about it.

That's one reason I have never bothered with it, I tend to get motion sickness from some things too and honestly back when during the PS1 era a lot of the 1st person style stuff used to make me feel pretty gross after playing for a little while.

The VR space DEFINITELY includes software, and that is exactly what he's saying!

When asked about how Xbox stands against the competition in the VR space, Spencer replies "we’re focused a lot more on the software side of that right now."... I mean, talk about saying your going to partner with VR headset makers with out saying your going to partner with VR headset makers! How is nobody else seeing this as he's basically confirming VR software?

Sony has a brand new headset coming next year, and they still very much have VR studios. Actually, Insomniac had to rush to finish their Oculus game when Sony bought them. They are going big on VR, and asking their top tier devs to include VR modes in their games.

Spencer called VR a relatively niche and “isolating” format that doesn’t fit with his vision of gaming as a “communal” pastime, adding that when it came to Xbox customer feedback, “nobody’s asking for VR”.

Maybe they are making VR games for PS5.

I'd personally rather them do PSVR2 games than no VR at all.

However, that would mean that they would need to bring those games, like Flight Simulator to PS5? I don't see it. Maybe Elder Scrolls VI, but that's already a touchy subject for most. I can only imagine if it were multi-platform AND console exclusive in VR for PS5. There would be riots... but then, maybe there should be.

Frankly, I believe that no matter what they do, unless they start supporting other headsets on Xbox by the time PSVR2 releases next year, they stand to slowly but surely accumulate major toxicity from those at the center of the Venn diagram where Xbox and VR mix, which seems to be overlapping more, due to a growing VR market.

The one game that would come to ps5 with vr is Minecraft. If other games do come out they’ll probably be like mini games or like a short “one shot” game.

I believe it already is on PSVR, though I've never played it, and I agree that it'll probably be the only one.

Satya says that this is wrong, and VR/metaverse will come to Xbox.

“You can absolutely expect us to do things in gaming,” says Nadella. “If you take Halo as a game, it is a metaverse. Minecraft is a metaverse, and so is Flight Sim. In some sense, they’re 2D today, and the question is can you now take that to a full 3D world, and we absolutely plan to do so.”

Edit: also posting this in the appropriate (positive) Xbox VR thread.

I'm not sure if Satya is fully understanding the term "metaverse" in the truest context, meaning the interconnected worlds of all media and games, but he's clearly saying that their games' universes will be included in VR... I mean, he's the CEO of Microsoft, which is the wealthiest company of the planet right now, so I think his words are kind of more true on this subject than anybody's at Microsoft. It also backs up what Phil said about them working on the software for VR.
