Sony Worldwide Studios President, Shuhei drops some details about the free iOS and Android app for the PlayStation 4.

Did any of the early birds among you stay up the week before last to watch the Tokyo Game Show keynote? If you did, you’ll have seen Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida take to the stage to unveil the new PlayStation App, launching alongside PS4 later this year.

In general terms, the new app allows you to take the PlayStation experience with you when you’re away from your PS4. You can stay in touch with friends, compare Trophies, view friends’ activity (such as recorded or live-streamed gameplay), and access all the latest PlayStation.Blog news.

I caught up with Yoshida immediately after the show, and asked him to expand on exactly what gamers can expect from PlayStation App later this year.

“It’s an application that anyone can download for free on iOS and Android devices,” he explained.

“There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile and send messages — even voice messages — to friends between your smartphone and PS4.

“A friend on PS4 can also send out an invitation for a multiplayer game, which you can then check on the App, and you can also purchase PS4 games from PlayStation Store. Your game will immediately start downloading while you’re away.”

PlayStation App will also offer ‘second screen’ gameplay features on enabled titles. For example, during the TGS presentation Yoshida showed how the app interacts with The Playroom — he drew a picture of Knack on his smartphone’s touch screen, and then pushed it into the PS4 game on his TV, allowing the game’s bot characters to play with the item he’d created.

“There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch Dogs or Battlefield, and that’s great,” he added.

“But smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.”

We’ll have a more in-depth look at PlayStation App in action nearer launch.

Looks fun. Good amount of different modes to keep things interesting. I always like cooperative multiplayer more than just standard deathmatch type of stuff. Mainly because I'm just not very good.

ZZZZZzzzzzz.....

How this still sells millions I will never understand. Squads is basically Horde mode like you mentioned Plainview, but it's also the same thing rinsed and repeated across all these diff modes within squads....

I think they're running out of fresh new ideas.

Sweet, the music of Zelda is probably the best in the industry. It's a shame they aren't coming near me because my gf loves orchestras and I love Zelda - could kill two bids with one stone.

So this mode is kind of like Zombie mode that Tryearch normally does, but it's their extra mode.

I'm not getting this game anyway, will be my first COD I haven't bought since World at War, buying BF4 instead :)

Anybody win one yet
I've submitted a few of them (online, not via text). When you do it online, it immediately tells you that you didn't win. Almost makes you question whether or not it's actually checking anything behind the scenes!

Anyways, I'm already really sick of Taco Bell after going a few times in the last week. Not sure how many more times I'll go, as I think I think I'd rather just throw down $400 on the console than feel disgusting after eating at Taco Bell. ;)

Well I know what I'm doing first thing when I get off work today, firing up my Xbox and downloading that awesomeness!

Knowing EA, probably won't be able to do anything in the beta for at least a couple days anyway.

The new WWE2K14 trailer is the ultimate in WWE wrestling history. Every big superstar, ever, seems to be included. There's Hogan, Goldberg, Bret Hart, Yokozuna, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, well, click here for the complete roster. This is by far the biggest wrestling title of all time. Are you ready to grapple?

I'm really pumped for this one. The 30 years of Wrestlemania mode just looks fantastic and the roster seems extravagant. Add in all the features Yuke's has put in over the years and this could stand as one of the best wrestling games of all time. Hopefully it's not a disappointment in disguise.

Wow...that brought back so many childhood memories: Ultimate Warrior, Milliondollar Man, Hulk, wow...I've never bought a wrestling game since SNES. I think I may consider this one.
