X1 Axed Family Sharing; Steam Announces Family Sharing

Bring it back please... I want everything back they first announced.. I'm crazy right?
Nah, I was down with the originally announced X1 too

I'm with ya on this one. The original plan MS had for the XB1 was quite interesting and made it so different from the PS4 , it's a shame MS caved in to the demands because it could of being huge. When Steam was announced it too was met with lots of hostility but now it is adored by PC gamers.

If they bring back the proposed digital trade-in system and/or the family sharing stuff then X1 might have a big drawing point
I've always been a bit skeptical of a digital trade-in system. Just not really sure how that would work or why they'd be willing to give us money for a digital game.

I think there's always a catch with things like this, and that's what people were upset about. It's one of those, "too good to be true," things.

Why wouldn't they? The only difference between digital and physical is the disc/packaging, that costs like $0.17 (exaggeration but you get my point). You pay to access the game, they pay you something back to not access it anymore. But of course you would need an internet connection (shouldn't be an issue since you would be buying things digitally to begin with), they could just send a command to the console to wipe the game, and then delete the purchase from your purchase history so you couldn't download it again.

But what do they get out of it? They wouldn't be doing this just to be nice.

They take money away from GS and keep it between them and the dev/pub. If X1 had a digital trade-in system more people would buy the system, which means more XBL subs and more people would buy digital games. They get more money in the long run by spending a little bit to buy games back.

I can admit that I didn't like some of the original X1 plans, but I did not want them to change. I wanted to see how it would play out because I figured I'd get an X1 eventually regardless. There are too many X1 exclusives for me to stay away an entire generation.

Now, if they can still offer some of the announced benefits for digital, that will still be pretty interesting.

Most people get $2 - $12 in store credit for a trade at Gamestop. Publishers could offer $10 digital discount toward another one of their games for 'trading' something in.

This sounds nice. Steam is digital only so this feature would work great. But games are so cheap that I don't know how much this feature would get used. I own over +200 games and haven't even touched them all.

Suddenly people are claiming that others said sharing was bad. They still can't seem to grasp the fact that sharing was bad ONLY because it was a band-aid meant to gloss over the restrictive policies MS wanted to put in place.

XB1 (Old policies) had family sharing as a feature to lessen the blow of the ENTIRE CONSOLE ITSELF BEING HIGHLY RESTRICTIVE IN ITS USE.
Steam Family Share is not required and doesn't come as part of a scheme to govern your use of your gaming platform or games.

It would have softened that blow nicely too :p

If it comes back it'll be all bonus, put probably for digital titles only.

I'd be shocked if it doesn't come back. With Steam apparently attempting to break into peoples living rooms I think MS will need to go toe to toe in features.

Especially if SteamBox takes off at all.

This is true, but I think only if the price of the SteamBox is comparative. Based on the specs we've seen it could end up being way more.

Even still, it depends on a few things:
1. How much more
2. How much more powerful is the hardware
3. Will games have the same freedoms PC gamers enjoy (i.e. modding, fov settings, M&K)

If Steam releases a machine that actually is 50% more powerful (and shows it on day 1) with the ability to mod your games and upgrade bits and pieces here and there (I have a feeling upgrades won't be available) then I could see it taking off for around $800, at least to the console crowd that wants PC performance/features in games but is weary of building their own or paying $1500 for a pre-built.

We shall see though. I, for one, hope Steam pulls it off. I don't want another 10 year console cycle where after 5 years (if that this time) PC games are handicapped so that it's easier or even possible at all to port to these upcoming consoles.

With the specs shown in the beta..and just being a gaming OS I have trouble thinking it would take off. That hardware alone is going to make the prices too high for entry in to the family/console market that MS is aiming for.
