YES! Eff off two dissenting votes.

via NPR

The Federal Communications Commission approved the policy known as net neutrality by a 3-2 vote at its Thursday meeting, with FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler saying the policy will ensure "that no one — whether government or corporate — should control free open access to the Internet."

The policy helps to decide an essential question about how the Internet works, requiring service providers to be a neutral gateway instead of handling different types of Internet traffic in different ways — and at different costs.

"Today is a red-letter day," Wheeler said later.

The dissenting votes came from Michael O'Rielly and Ajut Pai, Republicans who warned that the FCC was overstepping its authority and interfering in commerce to solve a problem that doesn't exist. They also complained that the measure's 300-plus pages weren't publicly released or openly debated.

Seems like a good thing but I'll wait for the government to f*** it all up like they do to anything they touch.

I would like for someone to explain for me what was broken so bad that the govt needed to step in and "Fix" things.
This is a sad day for the internet...

How anyone that uses and understands the Internet could be against this is baffling to me.

Um, Google it.

Well a quick and easy to understand exp would be Comcast and Netflix. Many people on Comcast were not able to stream HD netflix even with the higher ter plans comcast had. So netflix paid to be on comcast fast path and low and behold everyone is getting HD on Comcast now.

Im all for net neutrality but i do have my reservations about having the FCC involved with oversight. They tried to do this before with keeping radio free and they failed horribly.

Ok...sounds great, so they cant do that anymore. Thats fantastic!
Do you actually believe they will Just raise everybody up to the same speed they give Netflix now? Or will they just bring everyone down to the lowest common denominator?
Thats whats going to happen, so now everyone gets the same s***ty connection...

It could be worse. It could have been in the hands of the scumbag Michael Powell.

Yes, ISPs will slow their own traffic on their own network in spite of this ruling. Everyone will now suffer slow Internet. Despite historical trends of technology improving, it will actually reverse course.

Wut? *waits for government takeover of internet talk*

So I'm going to lose my lightening speed? I'm not sure how this is a good thing for me. Right now I can download a thirty gig game in a half hour. I am far from rich but I pay for this vice. I cant see Brighthouse raising everybody up to that speed.
When does this go into affect? To me a smarter government intrusion would be to break up all of the local cable monopolies.

It's not monopolies per se. It's the fact that any telecom that wants to enter a city it most likely cannot go on the pole, i.e. put their wires on the telephone poles. There's just no room left. So the telecoms only choice is to put it underground. In that case they're requrired by law to put the road back the way it was, i.e. filling holes back up, paving, all of the permits, municipal workers that need to be hired, etc. You're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars for just a city block. There no way a telecom will do that.

What an awful situation then. The government has broken up companies in the past, perhaps that's the answer. I just don't see a gain on my end, just lower speeds.

I want car neutrality next. My car is my utility but I prefer a Ferrari. :p

Hooray. Shouldn't have even needed a vote honestly.

This was a sad day for the freedom of the internet, i can think of no system that the federal government has become involved in that has seen a boost. They also ruled that the fcc will deal with mobile data as well, the same federal government that has respected the peoples fourth amendment rights to privacy is now in complete control over the last area of free speech.

call me pessimistic but you guys are f***ed, no lube just toss sand on that blow hole and pound away.

I have a technical question on this. Will the use of services like VPNs be protected by this? Or even the Tor network?

I've heard that ISPs or DRM copy protections groups act all paranoid thinking anyone using a VPN must be a pirate and ISPs have sometimes moved to block these connections. I would hope a Fair Access stance includes those who choose to enter the internet with encryption with a VPN.

So to repeat my dumb question, will I lose my premium internet? I have enjoyed the speed and have gave up other luxuries to pay for this. I can understand people not wanting data caps etc. But I don't understand why that should affect if people are willing to pay more for faster net. On my end, in my area, I can only see this as a negative.

are you f***ing kidding the government wants VPN's and encryption dead it's harder to spy on people when they use that stuff. The government works for big business if banning VPN's and encryption makes it easier to go after pirates you bet your ass the good old government will be happy to do it for their money overlords.

I find it cute some people still think the government works for the people.

What lead you to this conclusion? Do you know what this net neutrality actually is?

No that is not what I was saying. I mean Comcast was slowing down Netflix traffic only. So while your speeds were great on everything else they would be s*** when using netflix to stream anything it would only effect your netflix streaming. So lets say you had 60 down you netflix stream would still be in SD and not change into HD like it should. The min Netflix paid comcast off on a peering agreement those streams all like magic worked just fine and everyone got HD streams. Comcast pretty much said pay us or we will slow down your connection to our customers.

That is what Net Neutrality is there to stop and s*** like in this pic.

My thing is it won't be long before the government get to act dub and demand fast speeds in area that are poor and the company's simply can't make any money in and force them to build there and you know who will pay for it. All this s*** is coming you can bet on it.

Big business and government when it comes to that they both win as their on the same team we the people always lose.

He doesn't.

Although, I don't think you can fault people for this one. Have you seen conservative media today? You would think the government just took over the Internet or Obama overreached or this was a liberal media issue or you're going to see huge tax increases. This is one of those issues being twisted to seem like Republicans want the same thing, but they really don't.

Has any ISP ever proposed anything like what is depicted in this image?
