Ultra HD(4K)

I'll start buying the UHD discs since I'm sure they will have the standard blurays included. I'll buy a player in a couple years when I buy my Panasonic or LG OLED, and I'll have quite a few 4K blus to enjoy by then.

Going into CES, we knew we'd see a number of Ultra HD Blu-ray players. It's no surprise Sony has one of its own: the UHP-H1. In addition to handling the visuals from those 4K discs, the player can also be configured to play multi-room audio through Sony's SongPal app or bump songs stored on a USB drive. The UHP-H1 is the company's first high-res certified Blu-ray player and its Bluetooth feature makes for easy pairing with speakers or headphones.

Not looking to go UHD yet? Sony's got a new option for you as well. The BDP-S6700 also packs in Bluetooth and can be arranged in a multi-room speaker setup. What's more, this player can be used to stream video games from PlayStation Now and can accommodate two DualShock 4 controllers. Both the UHP-H1 and BDP-S6700 have tech that upscales high-definition content to 4K resolution for "enhanced viewing." You know, for all of those Blu-ray discs that you already have in your library. No word on pricing for either of these right now, but Sony says they'll be available this spring which lines up nicely with the scheduled arrival of the new Blu-rays themselves.

Panasonic promises that the new player will hit the U.S consumer market in 2016. The company has already started selling a similar and 4K Blu-ray capable media player on the Japanese market, but this other device was sold only in very small quantities and was limited to sales in Japan. Not to mention, it cost roughly $3,300 US dollars, a steep price indeed for the world’s first 4K Blu-ray player.

In any case, The ultra HD Blu-ray standard is finalized and the discs themselves are on the verge of coming out thanks to media companies like Sony, Warner Bros, Fox and even smaller content providers like Shout Factory, with its upcoming IMAX feature films on Blu-ray in 4K, all of which will be offering HDR and enhanced color in their disc editions. Thus, Panasonic’s new US player is very likely to support all of these display technologies as well.

I'll wait until these players are selling for less than 200 bucks, the way Blu Ray players are cheap now.

I'll wait till they add 3D to the spec. Kind kind ridiculous that it isn't there at launch, if you ask me. 4K at 24 fps or 60fps, but still no 3D at 48 or 60 HFR standards? Very much BS, IMO. This isn't for me right now.

Oh and some PS4 being able to be upgraded to play UHDBR news.....

"There’s been some speculation that the PS4 could be firmware updated to allow Ultra HD Blu-ray compatibility, though Sony reps told us this was not possible, as the unit’s built-in BD drive can’t read the 3-layer media called for in the UHD BD spec. However, the company is considering a future “enhanced” PS4 model that would include an Ultra HD Blu-ray ready drive."

Let's hope hope next gen consoles do 4 k
Don't count on it. Xbox One and PS4 can barely handle 1080p which is only 2.25x the number of pixels of 720p (Xbox 360/PS3). 2160p (or 4K) is 4x the number of pixels of 1080p.

The consoles from a horsepower standpoint would be able to handle 4K blu ray just fine. The issue is that they are not HDCP 2.2 compliant and that cannot be added via firmware as HDCP 2.2 is a hardware security chip and obviously, the blu ray drives themselves do not read 3 layer discs..

Actually it might as 4K mastered movies will down convert to your resolution and should offer a better picture then a normal BR. But you would need a 4K UHD Player and Movie.

If you're not HDCP 2.2 it won't work at all. 10 year old TV's don't have HDCP 2.2,

For those who don't have 4K TV's with HDCP2.2....

HDfury Integral Key Features
  • icon-new.png
    Unique HDCP Doctor
Providing a total of 6 HDCP 1.4 and 2.2 engines for decryption/encryption, HDfury Integral offers a total HDCP workaround solution including HDCP 1.4 > HDCP 2.2 and HDCP 1.4 > HDCP 2.2 both ways conversion within the same unit.
It is capable of connecting any HDCP1.x or HDCP2.x source devices to any HDCP1.x or HDCP 2.x sink devices.
Each RX block decrypts the input first whether its 1.x or 2.x. Then each output port can individually encrypts it to 1.4(both) or 2.2(only top port) or not encrypt it at all.
Dual conversion can be operated on both channels simultaneously.

Display HDCP 2.2 Content with Non-Compliant Devices
HDCP 2.2 is the new copy-protection scheme for 4K UHD content. Not only it is not backward compatible but many recent 4K devices don’t even support it.
Source devices, including media servers and head-ends like Netflix, will encode their 4K content with this new scheme. TVs must be HDCP 2.2-enabled to play it, and everything in the video chain including switches and receivers must be compliant as well, or the display will go dark and/or display a HDCP error.
Bad news for consumers who have purchased expensive, high-bandwidth, processor-rich switchers and receivers to accommodate 4K. While the newer products may support the bandwidth needs of 4K, they won’t play copy-protected works until Integral is an active part of the setup.
