Wii U 2012-2016

If true and if they also don't starting selling the NX in 2016, they are officially cut out of the console market entirely.

They are only selling a couple of million Wii U consoles a year worldwide. I imagine it would take a while for the inventory to sell through once production stops.

What a dramatic turnaround from one gen to the next, from the best selling home console in Nintendo's history to the worst selling (don't mention Virtual Boy!)

Great games, disaster of a system.

It had a good run as far as games go. Bad marketing, should have been a different name instead of Wii U. It just sounded like an add on. Should have been much more powerful than it was. Get it right with the NX, please Nintendo.

That was pretty quick. 4 years.

Four years of no third-party games, first-party failing to put out a single Zelda game, and only ten million consoles sold. And that's what happens when you don't listen to the consumers and developers.

Man, sounds like they are betting the farm on the NX.
I hope that means big launch games and a return to form for them.
This is going to be an interesting holiday.

I don't think it's betting the farm. it's a matter of stopping selling a dead product.

Nintendo should be lucky stores even still carry Wii U on shelves. That's a lot of shelving that can go to competing products, or something else entirely.

When a new gen of consoles comes around, the company's last gen systems and games linger around for a few years before fizzling out. You still see 360 and PS3 on shelves. And PS2 was around for ages before disappearing.

But I think NX will put a nail in Wii U's coffin fast. Few stores will double up shelves to carry Wii U and NX. NX gives them a reason to get rid of Wii U fast, while still maintaining good relationships with Nintendo by holding the space for them until it comes out.

Knowing that, Nintendo will kill off Wii U production early.

“As recently posted by Nintendo on the Wii U website in Japan, Wii U production will end in the near future for the Japanese domestic market. We have nothing to announce in terms of exact timing.

We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

Damn, they didn't even wait for the Switch to release... Way to support your console...

I would have bought one had they ever lowered the price under $200. I bet it could have done fairly well at that level. Wii set the precedent that a low-powered niche console with a gimmick should sell below that price tag so they screwed their own selves by not sticking to that price point.

If Switch comes out at $399 it is dead. At $349 it has WiiU numbers. At $299 it will satify the Ninty nuts. At $199 it would be a yuge success.

Bought mine early 2013 and while it's had some moments, it's also had times of collecting dust for months on end, including March to October of this year. But the Switch hype has me playing it again and getting the most out of the system. I feel bad for passing on the N64 and GameCube, and getting rid of my Wii after a couple of months and missing out on a bunch of great games, so I don't want to repeat that with the Wii U.

The only console I didn't ever consider getting.

RIP

You and so many others missed out. The Wii U is an amazing console. It's a damn shame that more gamers didn't get the chance to experience it and take it for what it is. A good console with great games. The hallmark of console gaming.

It's more of a time thing for me though. I don't blame people for turning a blind eye to the console with so many other great gaming options available. I haven't played my Wii U as much as i wanted. Now that it's done and over with i'm wanting to play it more.

I don't think I missed out. The goofy tablet controller and high price turned me off. I've never seen a single game that ever really interested me. I didn't care about the Wii either, but someone bought one for me. Other than the Mario and Zelda series, I don't have any real reason to even look at anything Nintendo related.
