Because it has benefits for the publishers. Microsoft cares about them too but put things way too much in their favor.
Yeah, and it's too bad MS took the fall for it. I'm sure publishers like any kind of DRM attached to their games, but when gamers outed MS about it, not one single publisher came out to support them, or support DRM implementation.

I think youre jaded. Not a knock on you, but there hardly seems anything you really fancy when it comes to gaming in general. Thats cool...

You know what jaded means, right? because I believe I just said it is all the same stuff we have been playing for decades...that would = having too much of something.

Last-gen I was super excited for numerous games, like Gears of War. The Generation before that was the same with games like Forza Motorsport.

I am hoping No Mans Sky turns out to be as awesome as it looks. I am also hoping Battlefield go back to WW1 will usher in big changes for the fracnhise too.

I think this generation is one of the worst so far. None of the software is all that exciting. Yes, there are some good games, but there is nothing ground breaking. Nothing generation defining. It is all the same stuff we had played for a decade.

On the hardware front: Both consoles are lackluster. The features in in the dashboard are nothing exciting either. Just simple extensions of what we had last-gen. Yes, being able to record videos or take pics is nice, but it doesn't enhance or detract from the overall experience.

VR is on the Horizon for one of the consoles, but most of the games I have seen thus far look like games gamers have crapped on in the motion control era, and thus lack the inspiring and exciting impact needed.

Uncharted 4 coming out tomorrow about to change all that. Welcome to the greatness that is Naughty God.

About to play that bad boy all day tomorrow.

You know it. Took awhile for us to get a game that's not just gorgeous but also has good gameplay and a good story but it's here. Uncharted 4 baby. What do you know about that? Probably nothing.

Not entirely sure where to put this, and don't think it needs a whole thread. Reason I put it here is because it could be interesting to see how this youtube trend transfers to actual sales of each product.

Battlefield 1 Has Most Liked Trailer Ever on YouTube, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Most Disliked

Battlefield 1 was announced last week with a trailer, and if you're wondering if people like it or not, then we've got an answer for you: it's eclipsed one million likes on YouTube, which makes it the most liked trailer of all time. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was announced a week prior, and... well, it's not quite as popular. The futuristic shooter has surpassed one million dislikes, making it the most disliked trailer of all time

Maybe we should use youtube likes and dislikes as the barometer of what is or isn't a good game from now on. It is no worse than using pixels or video game awards to determine the same thing.

Normally I wouldn't post something as silly as this, but the stark contrast between the two seems significant. Especially in light of the Activision CEO spinning the dislikes into a positive for the shareholders.

April NPD is out today. I'm curious how Ratchet and Clank and Quantum Break will perform. QB released 4/5, and R&C released 4/12. I'm hoping R&C did well, because I enjoyed the game and would like to see more like it. R&C released at a $40 price tag, which will help sales, but it didn't have much marketing to speak of, nor does it appeal to the average gamer nowadays, although it did have very good reviews and good word of mouth. QB was a highly anticipated exclusive, had strong marketing, plenty of hype, and a full month to sell, although the reviews weren't all that stellar. I guess we'll see.

I am less and less relying on software numbers from NPD as they don't include digital. Digital is growing immensely. QB had a huge incentive for digital purchase due to the free Windows copy.

I thought I saw somewhere that it was the fastest selling in the series. Although I have no idea what the other games sold.

It was also #1 on the PS Store in Europe and #2 in NA.

Yeah EA just came out and said digital is at 30-32%

Yes, I saw one of the devs post that. Here are the previous launch numbers (I think these are first month?):

Ratchet & Clank (November 4, 2002) -- 112,000 units
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (November 11, 2003) -- 125,000 units
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (November 3, 2004) -- 207, 500 units
Ratchet: Deadlocked (October 25, 2005) -- 55,300 units
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (October 30, 2007) -- 74,500 units

Also, we know R&C did better than QB. Waiting for more specifics. As Kvally said, QB had digital incentives, and those sales aren't included; however, neither are R&C digital sales, and R&C was the second most popular digital download on PSN for the month.

  1. Dark Souls III (PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Ratchet & Clank (PS4)
  3. MLB 16: The Show (PS4, PS3)
  4. Tom Clancy’s The Division (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  6. Minecraft (Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3)
  7. Quantum Break (Xbox One)
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  9. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  10. Star Fox: Zero (Wii U)

No comment from Sony on winning the month so Xbox won?

Yay, Ratchet and Clank! Good job, Insomniac. Hopefully, this will encourage the development of other, similar types of games.

“Ratchet & Clank had the best launch of any game in the Ratchet & Clank franchise when adjusting for the number of days sold in the data month, with sales recapturing success not seen for the franchise since the height of the PlayStation 2 era,” said Callahan.

Hardware sales down 23% and so far, Sony is "declining to comment on hardware sales," which is kind of weird. Could MS have won the month?

p.s. MS declined to comment on hardware, too. As did Nintendo.

Nice. Good to see Ratchet & Clank sold well. That whole mantra of we want less remasters/remakes is stupid. Yeah, we want new games but if they remaster the old games right while giving us new stuff i'm fine with that. Looking forward to Uncharted 4 taking the top sales spot next time. Naughty Dog deserves it.

I agree with all that, with one exception -- R&C isn't a re-master. It's a new game. It is based on the old game, but believe me, I've played the old game twice, and this is a new game.

I know, but people bash a game like that even though it's a complete remake basically. One thing i heard is "Oh, it's a $40 quickly thrown together remake because Sony has no games". We know who these people are, just trying to bash a brand/game but still. Glad to see it sold well, cause supposedly PS gamers don't buy their games regardless.

PS4 was #1. Odd that they didn't mention it in their PR.

Don't know what to make of Quantum Break so low since it was pushed real hard. Maybe it had huge digital sales but regardless I hope it ends up doing well because we need more new IPs

If QB was on PS4 Intellivision would have made 627 posts about it having poor sales

I think it's assumed by now that PS4 will come out on top in sales each month. Maybe when Gears 4 comes out Xbox One will take a month. I guess Sony doesn't feel like rubbing it in like Microsoft did last gen when the 360 was killing it.

Yeah, QB placed pretty low, despite all the anticipation and marketing. I expect the average/middling reviews damaged it.

It's weird that Sony didn't mention they were #1. It was a slow month, year-over-year, so maybe they just didn't feel like there was much to celebrate. Or maybe they feel it's bad sportsmanship to announce every month they won NPD -- that it's really not necessary to do that.

Who expected QB to sell like gangbusters? It's an action game wrapped in heavy cinema clips.

Digital sales will always be tough to get.

The standard way of tracking sales is UPC scans at participating retailers. Then they do their algorithm magic to "assume full market representation".

With digital sales through MS or PSN or Steam, it's up to them whether they want to divulge their sales records to NPD. And going by the trend they don't and won't. So the best way to piece together sales is NPD (box copies) and ballpark an increase to take into account digital, or wait for a developer to announce on their own that their game sold XXX copies.... which you only hear about if it sold millions, or it's a big name publisher who details game sales in a quarterly report.

Console makers don't want to spill the beans with detailed digital sales data because it goes against brick and mortar, which MS/Sony/Nintendo still need hardware and disc sales. If they go into a head to head battle promoting big increases in digital sales, it goes against their need for each other.

Money is made with software. And whomever sells digital copies make money. The hardware seller (stores) make nothing on them..... although they make money off controllers and such.

If game sales keep trending to digital, there is less reason for stores to sell games. Or they'll jack up the price of hardware to make money off that, which goes against affordable console prices to get the user base up.

PC gaming is probably 95% digital now with the last remaining box copies being big name games and $5-10 jewel case bargain bin stuff. EB and Best Buy focus on PC gear now, not games. Best Buy can focus on other products, but EB now is trying to sell cellphones, tablets and other hardware to counter lost sales to digital.

PS4 - 175k
XB1 - 168k
WIU - 32k
360 - 13k
PS3 - 4k

PS4 flat YOY. Xbox One down YOY.

360 still dominating PS3 in North America.

Sony refused to comment on hardware sales seems odd when they still won.

Too close for them to prepare a statement I'm guessing.

I believe that this is the smallest gap for a win this gen. The last smallest gap was back in August 2015 (again, if I remember correctly -- and I believe it was a PS4 win by around 20K units).

Pretty sure QB would have ranked higher with digital sales included. That said, it sure wasn't a system seller. Not that I know if it would have been. I just hope it's a slow burner and sells for years to come like Alan Wake did. It deserves a QB2. Awesome game is awesome.

Congrats to all games in the Top 10 list, especially the new releases competing with the legacy juggernauts. Remember for every game that cracks the Top 10 list there are tons of other games, new, recent, and old releases, which do not.
