SEGA Dreamcast (Mini?)

So, what he's really trying to say is that he is Zach Morris? That's really all I got from reading half of that trash.

Don't know. That entire blog is a rambling, incoherent mess.

What I have learned though is that if (when) this proposal to Sega fails, they plan to crowd fund a non-branded version on Kickstarter. So I think there is probably plenty more hilarity and hijinks to witness on this one in 2016.

The Xbox 360 is the closest we will ever get to a Dreamcast 2

Xbox 360 did have some Dreamcast games on it.

Crazy Taxi
Ikaruga
Virtua On OT
Soul Calibur
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2
Sega Bass Fishing
Space Channel 5 Part 2
Jet Set Radio

Probably some more but I can't remember them all. It has quite a few Saturn games as well.

Dreamcast 2 Team: Project Dream Is About Reinventing Sega, Already Has A “Really Good Hardware Guy”

The Dreamcast is a legendary console- one of the most progressive machines ever made, loaded with one of the most astonishingly good lineups ever on a single console, a pioneering system that introduced concepts like online play and second screen gaming years before others would catch on- and all of it condensed into a short, eighteen month life cycle, before the heavy losses that it was incurring would force SEGA to leave the gaming hardware market permanently.

The Dreamcast’s reputation endures, and while SEGA managed to survive by leaving the hardware market, they are now a shell of the proud company they once were, making far fewer games, and very few of those reaching the same heights that their titles used to hit with alarming regularity back when they supported their own consoles.

In such a context, the question of a new SEGA console – because make no mistake, legions of loyal and hardcore fans want a new SEGA console – is a troubling one. SEGA can barely handle its product lines and finances as it is now- do we really want it to attempt another console in the condition that it is in right now?

Speaking to Twinfinite, Project Dream team members Bertie Wiseman and Joanne Freeman discussed why they believe there is still a place in the market for a brand new SEGA console.

“They have a lot to offer us still. I think it [Project Dream] is about reinventing SEGA. Bringing something back that everyone wants, especially today when it’s cool to be a retro gamer and people also want something new.”

“It’s not like SEGA is incapable of making new things. It’s just because of the past, how things preformed, the awful timing that they had, they felt it was better not to risk it. And then they carried on focusing more on what sells more of Japan.”

“We have a really good hardware guy that likes to remain anonymous,” said Freeman. “He has a few existing businesses and we have a lot of samples of things if it were to go into production – what it would be like, what the price range would be for the materials that we want to use, and of course whether we want to use the images that are on the site or have a look at newer designs. Or some of the things that fans have submitted to us by mail and say, ‘hey that looks really cool!’”

This all does raise the interesting question of just what the Dreamcast 2 pitch is– is it planned to be a brand new high end console that would go toe to toe with Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft’s offerings? Or is it going to be a retro gaming box, something like a repackaged Dreamcast capable of HD output, playing the entire library of SEGA games, perhaps?

Whatever it is, we await further developments on this with interest.

This is slightly unrelated, but I was curious as to what games Sega has released for the past few years, and saw they published a Luigi game with Capcom.

So then I clicked on Capcom and discovered the greatest game ever...

Sumo Cup: Yokozuna V Street Fighter.

Its a horse racing game.

With Sumo's as the jockeys.

And they have Street Fighter s*** going on too.

f***ing brilliant.

Dreamcast was the first first for many for consoles, first online voice chant (alien front online) first for MMO's on console (PSO), first for broadband online gaming connectivity. etc. What a great machine, it's ashame that piracy kiled it as it was so easy...

If Sega wants to get back into gaming, it's actually quite easy.

- No more hardware
- Less Sonic the Hedgehog trash
- Use those old franchises and update them to something modern gamers will like. Not a quick cash in. Something with some decent budgets

Some examples of getting updated with the times......

- GTA. From top down 2D game to 3D open ended third person
- Fallout. From isometric turnbased game to 3D real time (with VATs) RPG
- GT and Forza. Better visuals, better physics, more features, more customizing
- Sports. Better visuals, more customizing, more online features

What does Sega do? Crappy stuff like Altered Beast and Golden Axe action games. And more Sonic. They have some decent games like Vanquish and Binary Domain (I thought BD was trash), but those are less known games.

Segas has all kinds of great names like Golden Axe, Shinobi, ESwat, Super Monaco, Phantasy Star, After Burner etc..... Just take these titles and updated them to something good.

I love how the quoted dude keeps saying "We have a hardware guy."

Its like when a mate says "I have a pot/c***/ice guy"

I'd like 16 bit style sequels to Shining Force, Landstalker, Phantasy Star, etc.

Similar to what they did with Sonic 4.

This can work.

Sega has tried doing those Sega Ages Phantasy Star HD Update games for PS3.... I forget what they are called.

If you're thinking old school pixelated visuals, there's the whole trend of $10 indie style games. They can always try making quick retro looking games that involve limited budgets and hope it catches on. And if it's a success, make more.

Given the type of games you mentioned.... SF and Landstalker. I don't think any dev making a full budget $40 or $60 game would get enough sales. Those are nice RPGs, but also niche. Many people have never heard of unless someone has been playing games since the Genesis days.

But turning them into indie style retro games can work.

Yeah it seems like Sega is sitting on a gold mine but refuses to start digging.

Like Intelli said, let indies bring the series they obviously love and are inspired by back to market.

I would let multiple studios work on a series and pick out the best prospect for remakes or sequels.

lol

"The project has been taken offline. This is due to a schism within the team caused by inefficient and amateurish conduct resulting in members being removed and others leaving the team. In light of such unprofessional behavior and an embarrassing lack of progress, seasoned members of the gaming industry have chosen to distance themselves from the project. I too am stepping away from Project Dream. Please note the Twitter account @Project_DreamDC is no longer associated with this group."
