So, after paying way too much for satellite/cable in the past I finally cut the cord...well at least made a step to. I cancelled my dish network and bought a fire tv that has netflix/prime. I still wanted my sports so I also got playstation vue. Which really is a fantastic service. $35 a month for all the channels I want, DVR and high quality picture. I also sideloaded some extra addons on the fire tv that let me watch a ton more...

So while not completely off cable television, it's a large step for me. I don't really watch a whole lot of TV other than a few shows. I'm saving $60 a month by switching. Any other cord cutters out there? What's your source of video entertainment now, if any?

I could do it easily but my wife would kill me.

My source of entertainment is playing vid games and watching soccer on TV. I also recently came out of a 10 year retirement from playing soccer and joined a old persons league. Would you believe I had a 2nd half hat-trick last week after notching a first half shutout as goalkeeper! Still got it though the competition helps make me look a lot better than my aging skills. (8v8 small sided btw, it's a gas).

We did sometime around six months ago. On our primary TV in the living room, we have the XB1 so we have access to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video (all of which we subscribed to in place of our old cable package), plus the HD antenna so we get access to local channels. Comcast did recently offer to upgrade our Internet to the higher speed (I think up to 150 Mbps from 75) and include the basic digital cable for $10 extra a month, so we do have that as a fallback but even my wife now notices the difference between 1080p and the 480 we get on that.

We're mostly sitcom watchers, and we've been using her parents' AT&T account to access the Comedy Central app (and me the ESPN app) so we're really not missing a whole lot. We used to watch the Food Network a lot but haven't missed it as much as I thought.

We're probably actually going to do a trial of the DVD plan on Netflix soon so we can watch some shows we missed out on (for instance, we never really watched Modern Family, shocker!). Not sure we'll keep it, though.

Re: PS Vue - do you have to have a PS4 or 3 for that? How does that work? I just figured it was another one of those things like hulu where you had access to some stuff like Sony's movie studios and stuff, but if it actually does live TV I might have to consider it. We looked into sling also but just decided it wasn't worth it for what it was adding for us at the time.

Same. I'd probably do it, but to tell my wife run this app on this device to watch Show A and if it's Show B, do this. She likes to channel surf.

Currently contemplating doing it. Right now I have the Verizon Fios triple play package including Showtime. We were paying $125 a month for all three. I have two HD boxes, one with DVR. My two year contract was up and they raised it to $145 a month. When I asked why the price was going up they said NJ has passed some taxes. So my wife wants to cut the cord. I inquired about how much I'd save if we got rid of the land line (which I only use to find my phone when I've misplaced it) and one of the cable boxes. I think the phone was $7 and the second box was another $10. So I'd be paying

We bought an Amazon Firestick and my co-worker cracked it and added the Kodi app. I plugged it in for the first time last night and tested it out a little. If we wind up liking it I might wind up going down to just internet and buy a second Firestick so we have one on both TVs. The only thing I really care that much about on TV is watching the Premier League soccer matches when I want. I heard that you should be able to get feeds of the games no problem through Kodi. The thing is, sometime I can't watch them live and watch them on DVR. Does anyone know how easy it is to find replays of games?

If my bill goes up again next year I'm probably going to.

PS3, PS4, Fire TV/stick, Roku, iOS/Andriod all support it. It actually does live TV and even has DVR. You can watch any show that is 30 days old on any of your channels even if you don't explicitly record it. I recommend the fire TV, as you can have kodi/exodus installed on it in addition to PS Vue. The Fire TV has better performance than the stick as well. I also got a harmony remote so I can manage all the devices very easily. Highly recommended! You can get a 7 day trial to check it out.

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/network/vue/ (I chose 34.99 package)

Fire TV (99.99 not on sale)

Logitech Harmony Companion All In One Remote Control (125.99 not on sale)

You can channel surf on playstation vue or sling tv! (I recommend vue)

All the apps I know of for Kodi are for streaming. If you get a second stick, consider the fire TV. I had a stick but sold it and replaced it with the TV. Much more snappy and I use it for PS vue so it streams at 60fps instead of 30 on the stick.

I did this for about a year. Had Fios 50/50 for $49 a mo. Then I got Netflix, and Hulu on the Roku 3. I didnt miss cable at all. The only show I watched on cable was The Walking Dead. I just paid the $45 to Amazon to have the season. Fast forward a year and I met my now Wife and she wanted cable, so I buckled and got it. Her Regret was pretty fast since we almost watch Netflix exclusively. Our contract is up next July and we will be ditching Cable then. Luckily, in my area, all of the TV broadcast towers are in the same general location about 20 miles away. So there is about 50 channels OTA here easily.
Sling TV is another option, but it does not have 5.1 sound and that was a deal breaker for me.

I tried it on two occasions and went back to cable.

Gonna try, just cancelled Sky TV. I watch Netflix more these days. I may take on Now Tv.

No draw for HBO shows?

I did it years ago. s*** is to much money and to many f***ing ads. I pay for netflix, crunchyroll, fanimation, and WWE network. hell not much cheaper then cable but at least I get to watch what I want when I want.

I’m seriously considering cutting the cable cord now. Thinking of going modem only and then adding a Directv now package or similar for around $50-60 a month. I already subscribe to Netflix. I’d add Hulu. Comedy Central is free now. I can get the lowest package that has news stations, truTv, local channels I can do through an antenna or the lower streaming packages (Directv Now, YouTube TV, PS Vue) generally have them now. The only other thing I’d need is HBO and some sports channels. Possibly Showtime. I can subscribe to that for a month, binge, then cancel.

Oh yeah, cut it 4 years ago. Cable TV wasn't worth the cost. I did Roku and Hulu or Netflix for a couple years, then 2 years w/o TV at all (didn't miss it). About 6 months ago, I bought a new TV, and as part of setting it up, they hooked it up wirelessly, so I started watching Youtube and subscribed to Netflix. I'm probably going to drop Netflix, because it doesn't have much I'm interested in.

95% of what I watch is Youtube. I don't watch normal TV or movies -- that's all escapist entertainment to me, and I've already got my escapist entertainment (videogames). I'm amazed at what a great platform Youtube is. So much great content.

So I pay $50 for standard internet service, and that's about it. The $9 for Netflix will probably go away once I finish watching this season of Comedians in Cars.

Have you looked into Hulu's TV package? I haven't looked recently to see how it matches up with DirecTV Now (which I have), but if you are looking to get Hulu anyways, it might be cheaper to get both.

I've had DirecTV Now since March I think, and it has been pretty good. I didn't watch a lot of TV to begin with before so I was looking to get something as cheap as possible. At the time I was paying about $180 a month for Internet and cable and decided enough was enough. I actually went with Vue for a while and it was a good service as well. DirecTV had more channels for the price, along with HBO being only $5 a month instead of $10-15 under Vue. The one advantage with Vue is I got local CBS while DirecTV doesn't have either in my area, and my antenna coverage is garbage here.

I've thought about dropping a streaming TV service for now though. I realized that my Internet account still grants me all channels on ESPN's streaming app, so that covers most of the sports I watch right now, as I get the MLB and NHL streaming packages anyways. Beyond that, aside from watching the odd episode of Simpsons or Family Guy on rerun, Ghost Adventures is about the only show I watch with any regularity right now. I haven't really looked to see if I could watch that show elsewhere, otherwise just going Netflix and Amazon Prime might be good enough right now.

Ok just did a quick look at Hulu TV and it looks like a damn good deal. $40 a month and it's got all the channels I'd want including a couple locals, plus it comes with Hulu's streaming library as well. HBO is $15 a month so $55 or so a month is pretty good. I currently pay $58 a month with DirecTV and I think that is going up $5 soon.

There's also Philo which I keep forgetting to check. $40 channels for $16, but no sports. Absolute beast deal if you don't watch sports.

I currently just have DSL Internet at home, but it's still good enough to get me shows in HD on Amazon or Netflix.

My ASUS RoG Laptop covers me for games and HD shows. I don't even own a TV. I live in a small apartment and I'm content to watch shows that way with my headphones plugged in.

I also have a decent ASUS Tablet on my Verizon account. I originally splurged on it as a Google Maps GPS tool, but I use it a lot for YouTube.

I cut the cord I got tired of paying a high cable bill and we’ve been having a lot of outages. I just kept their internet service.

My sister ordered me a Amazon Firestick for my Birthday it comes in this coming week. I’ve read up on Kodi and Terrarium TV. Are these worth it? Easy to use, free content, good quality, ect... any of you guys have experience with these?

Or is there any other good cheap alternatives for watching tv and sports?

I haven't used terrarium, but I use Kodi with Neptune rising. It's not live TV but I can watch any show on there with high quality and the commercials already edited out.
