I do this with a family member where we split the costs. I still prefer to buy discs when I can, but for cheap digital games, buddy up with a trustworthy person, home share, and split the costs, and share the games.

This article is from 2015, so the new UI may have things in different places, but it still acts the same:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/how-to/gameshare-xbox-one/

Here's how it goes:

The person you trust and want to share games with should do the same thing if you want to mutually share each other's games. Or else, you only do it for one side. My bud and I share both libraries, so we did this to each other's systems:

- I add his gamertag login to my system, and sign into my system as him
- I then set the console to Home (under his gamertag)
- Log out of his gamertag, and then re-log back in as my own
- Now I can see his games
- If he does the same thing on his system (use my login etc....), he sees my games
- Done
- If you don't want to do it anymore, no problem. Just delete his profile and logged into your system as you, just set your system as Home under your gamertag. Now, he can't see your game library anymore

Home sharing does the following:

- Can see and play each other's digital games
- This also includes EA Access games, but both people have to have the EA Access app to work
- BC 360 digital games work too
- You can even play in the same MP game (we play BF1 together even though I'm the one who bought a digital copy)
- Xbox Gold is shared too, so you just need to buy one annual 12 month plan
- BUT, a console can only mess around with setting a system as Home 3 times per year. So don't go around recklessly turning it on and off with any family members. If you reach the limit, it locks you with the last home sharing thing you did

Have fun and share the costs!

I almost never buy console games at the moment. But any regulars that want the games I have, yell out and we can sort something out.

I do this with my friend as well. The only down side is that if I am offline then I can only play my buddies games and not mine. Other than that, best feature ever.

The other person's Xbox has to be turned on?
No, but since your Xbox is now your buddies home Xbox, only the stuff he has bought will work if you are offline. If you are online, you can play both peoples libraries regardless if he is logged in or not.

Ah, didn't know that. I'm always online though, so no biggie.

That's not right. I have this setup and my buddy has been traveling the world for the last six months and I can play any game he bought without issue despite the fact he's been offline for ages.

He means if your XBox is offline, not your buddies

My friends Xbox is offline. Has been since June. Digital content is stored on an account and not the device. As long as you have the two accounts on your Xbox it doesn't matter.

Sorry. I don't think I was being very clear. When you select an Xbox to be a home Xbox for an account, that account can access all of that persons content, regardless if the Xbox is online or not. Now if I were to go to my brothers house and put my profile in his xbox and download a bunch of my games to his Xbox, we could play them as long as I was signed in. If I logged out at my brothers house, he wouldn't be able to play my games.

So they way you can access content is to play it on the home Xbox of the person who bought it, or you can be on any Xbox and play it so long as the profile who bought it is logged on to that other Xbox.

That sums up how the game sharing is able to work. I make my Xbox my buddies home Xbox. He makes his Xbox my home Xbox. I can play his games on my Xbox because my Xbox is now his home Xbox. I can also play my games on my Xbox, because my profile is logged into Xbox live even though my Xbox isn't my home Xbox.

If you want to test this out, disconnect from Xbox live then try to play a game that you know you bought on your profile. If your Xbox isn't the home Xbox of that profile, you won't be able to play if you are offline. Or, you can log out of your profile completely and then log into your kids account. If your Xbox is not your home Xbox, you will not be able to play games you bought on your profile unless that profile is logged into Xbox.live.

That probably didn't make sense, did it?

I do this with my brother. I have 164 games installed with another 68 on my ready to install. As a stalwart of physical games this gen, I decided to go all digital from now on to share with him and it's honestly more convenient. Changing discs has gotten old.

Makes me wish the original gamesharing would come back.

Between getting 48 "free" games a year with XBLGold, back compat expanding and sharing with big bro I already own more Xbone games after 2 years than Xbox 360 in 11!

It truly is a one console future.

Ah. So you mean if the console is disconnected you want to play on then you can only play the games for the home profile bought ? Yeah it's always been like that. Mine is never disconnected so I have the full catalogue of games bought myself and my buddy bought.

Awesome for sure. If Microsoft had stuck with their original vision and made game sharing a big feature then i think they would have done just fine in the end.

Do both consoles need a gold account to share? I was gonna put my fatty in my sons playroom and the S living room.

I don't believe so, your digital games are your games to share even if your gold expries, with of course the exception of Games With Gold Xbox One games, you need an active gold sub to continue playing those (360 games will still work)

Oblivion installed and it turns out my brother owned Trine 2. Nice surprse.

We are a two console home - the den X1 is my "home" console but my husband's console. The living room one is mine. I buy everything under my profile and it downloads on both consoles. I have to be online to use the downloadable games which can be a pain when our internet is acting up but it sure beats fighting over whose turn it is to play certain games!

Been sharing with my brother in law since launch. Great ffeature that woukd gave been even better with the original online check in plan. Would have been able to do it with disk based games with ability to resell and benefit from retailer deals instead of the higher priced digital copies.

The answer to that is no. Your son and use your Xbox live account to get gold online gameplay but he can't get anything for himself or able to get Games for Gold unless you get it.

Also, he can't play free weekend titles as well.

You can't have the same GT signed in on two different XBO consoles at the same time correct? I know you can have the same GT signed in on a XB1 and a 360 at the same time, as that's what we do now.

Yeah, thats right. The same GT can not be signed in twice. All you need is the two GTs on each xbox and you can play all the games from both GT on either box but only one GT can be active on each xbox at one time.

BDaddyK,

What you do is have both systems have each other's gamertag set in the system. BUT, have the other person's gamertag set as Home.

Person A's system...... log in as Person B's gamertag, and set system as Home. Log them out, and resign under Person A's gamertag. Now you can see B's games.

If you want to share mutually (instead of having sharing only go one way), do the same thing on his system.....

Person B's system...... log in as Person A's gamertag, and set system as Home. Log them out, and resign under Person B's gamertag. Now you can see A's games.

As I said before in my post, make sure you do this right and don't erratically mess around setting/resetting a system as Home. You only get to do this 3 times per year. On the third set, your system is locked as Home under that last gamertag for a year.

Oh, I know how to set up the family sharing with a buddy or second gamertag. I was just wondering if you need a two gold accounts to share. My son is only seven, so he doesn't have his own account. I just wanted to setup my other XB1 in his platoon so he could play his games while I play mine in the living room, without us both having to use my gamertag.

It's seeming more and more common that households own more than one console. I wonder if they'll change the home system soon.

Like, if it's all on the same ip, you automatically share? Or something lol.

Ah ok. No worries.

You only need one gold account.
