I would rather have new games for 1 bucks, but alas.

This is pretty good value. I just hope it's like EA access where you get early access to new games even for just an hour and a discount option for those games too. An incentive to own XGP even if you don't care for the games.
I'd wager we may see even better deals at times.

At some point MS will likely start offering bundles for their services. I can see a point where MS Music, XBL and this service are combined for one yearly fee like Amazon Prime. I think it would be smart to give gamers a month of this service free with XBL just to give people a taste.

Also wouldn't shock me to see a rental service eventually make it's way. Even if there were a 2 to 4 week period before games were available to rent, it would make sense. They could follow the same structure you see for audible books.

hope in aus its under $15/month any more ill pass. Need to wait until end if year anyway when decent internet comes to my street.

GameStop shares are tanking after Microsoft unveils a new attack on the used game business

Today, Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass- a Netflix-like service that will bring Xbox One gamers unlimited access to a selection of over 100 games, including hits like "Halo 5: Guardians," for $9.99 per month, when it launches in the Spring.

Following the announcement, shares in nationwide video game retail chain GameStop sunk around 5% to $25.11 per share.

The sale of pre-owned and "value" (cheaper, older games) titles has long been a cornerstone of GameStop's business, accounting for about 25% of the chain's revenue and about 47% of its gross profit in 2015. With Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft stands to take a hefty chunk of that budget-conscious market for itself.

The video game industry has long been critical of GameStop in particular and the pre-owned games market in particular. When a brand new game is sold, the title's publisher takes a hefty cut of the proceeds, but once it gets sold back to GameStop, Amazon, or Walmart and becomes a pre-owned title, the original creators never see another dime.

Microsoft itself has tried to take a bite out of the used game market before, with an aborted plan that would have tied a game to the Xbox One console on which it's played forever - effectively destroying the market for used games on the Xbox One forever. Amid a massive backlash, Microsoft scuttled that plan ahead of the Xbox One's 2013 launch.

Now, it seems that Microsoft is trying again. But instead of limiting the Xbox One hardware, Microsoft is trying to entice gamers away with a better deal. And while $9.99 a month is fairly cheap for the number of games involved, it's better than the zero dollars the publishers would get from the sale of used games.

GameStop did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Good idea. With people holding off on new game purchases and them hitting the bargain bin in 1-2 months anyway, might as well have a subscription service. Hopefully new games won't take long to become available but even so, this will be great for older games.

For me it's gotten to the point where i don't want to spend money on the more niche games either, just wait for them to hit Games With Gold and play them for free. Since i'm always going to have an online subscription, i don't care if i own the games. Just want to play them and move on.

Holy crap, this could be great. We need more details but this is cheaper than Netflix and you can download instead of stream which is way better for gaming.

Sweet deal. But it's best for gamers for care more about BC games and isn't a Gold member getting free GwG games. Although there's a bunch of AAA games on that list, many of the starting list of 20-30 are XBLA quality freebies given out with GwG over the years.

Of course who knows what the other 70 games are.

Also Home Sharing works too. So if you have a friend or family member doing Home Sharing, only one of you needs to subscribe and both of you get the games.

It's PS Now only good
Funny how they put SR4 big in the pic.

That was one of the rip off PS Now streaming scams where Sony was charging $30 for 30 days. When at the time the game was already bargain binned and Amazon was already selling the discs for $15-20.

For the gamer that doesn't care about paying $60 to play the latest games:

- Xbox Gold $60/yr
- With Gold, you get some free monthly GwG games, online MP and Home Sharing option
- EA Access $30/yr
- Xbox Game Pass $100/yr

$190/yr + any applicable taxes.

Of course, EA Access, GwG and Game Pass may have some duplication, but for a casual gamer, paying about $200/yr gets you online MP and a tons of available games to start with, and every month new games added. Of course, they won't be the latest AAA games, but for many people it's probably good enough.

It's like Netflix. Netflix doesn't add the latest blockbuster movies right away. It takes time, and for some movies/tv shows, they don't come to Netflix anyway.

Heck cheap out with a family member or trustworthy friend and do Home Sharing. You'd get everything above and cut the costs in half between you and the other person.

Free trial for certain Insider Members., i messed around with it earlier.

Here is my biggest grip from another gamers point of view. What if Activision won't let BLOPS 2 be BC but put in that Game Pass service? You know the sh*t storm that MS will get for that.

The more I think about it seems pointless. If you have a hardware that can do BC and now all of sudden you have to pay to play those Xbox 360 titles, to me that is not gamers first.

Seems a legit complaint for the current backward compatible games. I never thought the entire 360 library would make it over though. Now there is a revenue mechanism to encourage that and even to reward those older games. The 360 games is a nice marketing punch for the library of games but new offerings will sell it similar to ea access. The value of the subscription should grow over time as does ea access.

I am just saying it pointless when you have a hardware you know it can be BC and then the most requested game like COD BLOPS 2 gets put into that service and not BC.

That can really hurt MS. Also, I hope when they put new games is to stay in that service and not be removed.

Looks like it could be a really good deal for some. Personally I like to buy my games so that I can put them on a shelf or in a hard drive where their untouched bits can sit and wait for my retirement.

anyone else see that with this Ms can come out swinging on price for there consoles?
$199 xb1S on 1 year sub, Xbox Scorpio $299 with a 2 yr sub($399,if launch at $499) .

I think they posted saying it's $13 a month.

You can pick up an Xbox One S with a game from the MS store for AUD$299 at the moment. Including the limited edition GoW4 console.

That's like, $230 US for a console and a game (After tax)

some one from Xbox Aus tweeted me saying its $10.95/month.

that's cheap for the slim, its tempting but I'm holding off for Scorpio.

Microsoft has just announced Xbox Game Pass, an all you can eat game library for a fixed monthly fee.

The gaming subscription service is due this spring (although Preview testers are trying a reduced version of the service now) and will give you 100 Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 games for £7.99/$9.99 per month.

It's not a streaming service though, games are downloaded directly rather than streamed, but that access to an unlimited library for a tiny monthly fee does have that Netflix-y feel. All the Xbox One games on the service will also include a discount if you want to buy them permanently.

New games will arrive every month with Microsoft promising this as a sample of games on offer: Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Saints Row 4 Re-Elected, NBA 2K16, Mad Max, LEGO Batman, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Terraria, Payday 2, SoulCalibur II, and Tekken Tag 2.

I spoke to Parimal Deshpande the director of marketing for Xbox Game Pass to find out more.

Can you clarify the service in your own words - it sounds like a cross between Netflix and Games with Gold?
I think there are always comparisons to extremely popular subscription services like Netflix – a long-standing Xbox partner – when a new type of service is launched. There are certainly differences between the services in terms of content being offered; we’re focused on offering a choice of games. Also, all games in the Xbox Game Pass catalogue will be downloaded to your Xbox One. This means continuous, full-fidelity gameplay without streaming. We know that this has been something the gaming community values in order to provide an enjoyable and seamless experience.

How will this sit alongside services such as Games with Gold and backwards compatibility?
Games with Gold and Xbox Game Pass are two different service offerings with unique benefits. Games with Gold is an added benefit specific to Xbox Live Gold members that rewards players with two to four free games each month to enjoy. Xbox Game Pass is a subscription-based service that gives you unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 backward compatible games for Xbox One for £7.99/$9.99 per month. Xbox Live Gold is not required for Xbox Game Pass, however, Xbox Live Gold is required for multiplayer titles that are part of the Xbox Game Pass catalogue.

Will games be permanently added to the library? Or removed after a time?
We’re always looking for ways to give our fans choice with the ability to discover new games each month. This means that we continuously re-evaluate the titles in the catalogue based on the needs of our fans. One of the great things about Xbox Game Pass is that we will add new games every month, so there is always something new to play. With the Leaving Soon section, you can see which games will be rotating out of Xbox Game Pass. If you love an Xbox One game currently in the catalogue, you can buy it and instantly save 20 percent off the price of the game, as well as an additional 10 percent off related game add-ons, while the base game is still in the catalog.

How will it work with multiple profiles on one machine, or the same profile on multiple machines?
Xbox Game Pass follows the same Home Sharing rights as the Xbox Live Gold subscription and individual base games. In short, if a home user has an active Game Pass subscription, or if an active Game Pass subscriber is logged into the machine, all other logged in profiles can enjoy Game Pass as well.

Is there a partnership system requiring an input from publishers, or will any Xbox game be viable?
Based on fan feedback, quality, variety/selection and value represent the three main pillars of a great gaming subscription service. With Xbox Game Pass, our goal is to deliver the best-possible gaming experience and give our fans great games of every fashion, from AAA to ID, and from hits to hidden gems from Microsoft Studios as well as top industry publishers.

Our goal is to deliver a variety of games for one low monthly price, and while we won’t be able to include every game, we’re focusing on giving fans a high-quality catalogue of diverse experiences. We’re excited to offer a curated experience that gives our fans the best choice and value, and with new games added every month for one low monthly price, there’s always a new game to discover.

Will there be full online functionality and, if there is, will Game Pass games work with retail versions?
For any title with active online servers and/or multiplayer, Xbox Game Pass titles will work and cross-play with both digital and physical retail versions. From time to time, and in rare instances, there may be a title in Xbox Game Pass with robust single player experiences, but previously discontinued online servers and/or multiplayer features. Online functionality is at the sole discretion of the publisher and may be adjusted or discontinued for a variety of reasons. Rest assured, all of these factors have been carefully considered in selecting titles that will deliver tremendous fun and enjoyment to Game Pass subscribers.

Are there any qualification criteria? Say a certain time after launch?
With Xbox Game Pass, fans get the opportunity to discover new games you’ve always wanted to play or revisit old favourites that you’ve been missing. Newly-launched games may be available on Xbox Game Pass after a period of time.

How will this work with other similar programs like EA Access?
While we can’t speak to what others offer, we’re always committed to providing our fans choice and value when it comes to gaming. Our fans cited that the right balance of selection, quality, and value are key factors when considering game subscription services. Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to a catalogue of more than 100 Xbox 360 and Xbox One games for Xbox One. Xbox Game Pass will add new games to its catalogue every month, which means you will always find something fresh and exciting to play. Fans also called out streaming issues due to intermittent internet connectivity as the top pain point for game streaming services, which is why with Xbox Game Pass, you can download and experience games in their full fidelity and native resolution.

Will subscription cancelation be immediate or by calendar month?
If your subscription expires or is cancelled, any games downloaded through Xbox Game Pass will no longer be available for you to play.

I am just saying it pointless when you have a hardware you know it can be BC and then the most requested game like COD BLOPS 2 gets put into that service and not BC.

That can really hurt MS. Also, I hope when they put new games is to stay in that service and not be removed.

By default, in order for the X360 titles to be offered in this service, they'll have to work through BC. They won't be able to include it in the service and exclude the other. In addition, Game Pass will offer a discount to members who choose to purchase those games.

Games do cycle in and out though.

I've seen video online saying games will cycle in and out. That kind of sucks but still not bad. This looks pretty cool.

Netflix does the same with their titles. Hopefully, they'll have some sort of notification saying what's being added and what's going.

When Gamestop offers $5 trade in value for games like Uncharted 4, how can you feel sorry for them?
