Sony on Backwards Compatibility

Shutting down thread. It immediately and not surprisingly became a place for Xbox owners to boast about beating Sony. Yay for you, you win.

This isn't the place for versus threads.

"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much," says Ryan. "That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"

So... is PS Now pointless Jim??

Plus it's very clear that bc has worked very well for MS

Yeah, people keep asking for things they don't want. Why does Sony keeps saying that lol

He's head of PS in Europe, I think. He has a tendency to shoot his mouth off, get hyperbolic. Said something recently about "Fortress PlayStation outselling Xbox 3 to 1" in Europe. He's the kind of guy who'll sling sh*t at the competition.

Isn't this really so they can just continue to charge people to re-buy older games?

I mean I think the number of people playing BC games on Xbox is enough to prove that people still play them, especially the bigger titles like Black Ops and RDR.

Honestly I wouldn't go back and play the vast majority of those old games anymore anyway, I can only think of a few that I miss having from last gen and with all there is to play on the current consoles I wouldn't really have time. It's a nice feature to have but the reality is it's not something a lot of people use and it's probably not worth the cost for them to try to get it to work, especially with the PS3 stuff that would be much harder to make work with the PS4 than say the 360 stuff was with the X1 simply because the PS3 used the cell. Think of it this way, the more time people are playing those old games the less time they are playing the new stuff which means less money is being spent on newer software.

If it comes down to it I'd rather have rebuilt/remastered versions than straight BC versions. At least the graphics get a bit of a bump and sometimes you get increased performance.

It always was pointless. As I said before when people are playing a lot of old games it kind of defeats the purpose of having a new console, the more time they spend playing those old games means you aren't making as much money on the newer stuff because they aren't buying it. Same thing as when they used to brag about Netflix usage on the console, what was the point in that? they weren't making money off of it and the more time people spend streaming movies means the less time they are playing games.

That would make sense for BC back in the day but now people are rebuying games on X1. No way it hasn't worked out fairly well for everyone involved there. It is pretty much free money for publishers.

How many are buying used copies vs new sales? wasn't the whole point supposed to be not having to pay to play your old games? that was what MS kept saying anyway. If it was fairly easy for MS to do and didn't cost an arm and a leg then there is no harm done, it's not a bad thing it's just not something that's really necessary either.

Well Black Ops 2 making the top 10 for the month says a lot. No question people are buying the games off the Xbox store.

Got nothing else to play except last gen games. Hey-oooh.

He's got a point...

But then, I'm probably not the guy to ask. I'm not interested in playing the new GT, either.

His example of iterative games is fair but for the fact all the numbered Gran Turismos on older hardware has more content than then the PS4 one, but it doesn't apply to non iterative games.

Having the latest version of the Oxford dictionary in your public library doesn't make up for a lack of Tolkien, Shaw, Dickens, Shakespeare, Meyer and Rand just cos they old.

PS3 is understandable...PSone however, my modded OG Xbox could emulate PSOne games flawlessly and even had button to increase framerate!

I guess its the amount of effort you put into it.

BC has doubled the value and variety of games with gold, makes individual game communities bigger, gives another generations worth of variety and extends the validity of software beyond its original hardware.

Its also hypocriical given Parappa, LocoRoco, wipeout and Patapon

His point was more about how they look, wipeout and those other games aren't straight ports as they've gotten visual upgrades etc.

As far as the effort yeah it's just where you want to spend your resources, either spend them on making new games and doing what you can to get the most out of the hardware you have for current games or spend money and time on making old games work on a new machine. I'm sure it would cost sony substantially more to get PS3 games working on the PS4 than it cost MS to get 360 games working on the X1. As far as the older Sony consoles I just don't see the point even though some work on it, yeah it'll make a small group happy and it's never bad to have more options but it's not something that'll really make a big splash IMO.

Same here, I'm not a big racing game fan especially the sim type racers.

Xbox's previous generation of games actually still look good though. Or at least better than that.

Maybe Sony fans are irritable because their PS4 has no games?

I don't care about bc with PS3/2/1. It would be nice if PS5 was bc with PS4, though. That's the only thing that concerns me about Ryan's comment -- that maybe it reflects a Sony attitude toward bc going forward. However, that's kind of a stretch.
