Today we announced that we are working with some incredible talent to bring you an epic new story experience set in the Halo Universe, the Halo TV series. SHOWTIME brings its powerful legacy of experience in building stories for premium cable and together with Amblin Television and legendary storyteller Steven Spielberg, have been gracious partners in helping put together the right creative team to bring Halo to television. We are thrilled to have experienced showrunner Kyle Killen (Lone Star) and blockbuster director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) on board, both of whom bring their own flavor of vision, intelligence, and voice to Halo. We couldn't have asked for a stronger or more passionate team to collaborate with.

“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded,” said Showtime president David Nevins in a statement. “In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

The series will dramatize “an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant,” per Showtime. “Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

Sounds good on paper, hope it’s as good as it sounds.

I'm excited for this but sci fi on TV almost never fails to disappoint me (save for Black Mirror). Star Trek Discovery had a massive budget and we got pretty terrible Klingons. I can't imagine how they're going to realize the Covenant here.

Altered Carbon is pretty good as well, but I know what you mean. If they can hit it Battlestar Galactica level, I'll be happy.

It would seem now is the right time for a big budget show based on a game, special effects on television are starting to rival those in movies, well clearly it depends on the budget but we know it can be done.

Can't honestly say I've watched much if any TV sci-fi since Babylon 5.

You should give The Expanse a try, the first season is a little slow but it's worth watching, seasons two and three are some of the best television out there. Dark Matter was another good Sci-fi show that was cancelled too early, not as good as the expanse but still very entertaining.

I'll have to see if it's on Netflix, if I remember. Although the odds of talking my wife into watching that are next to nil, so maybe not soon.

Master Chief will be a "lead character" in Showtime's upcoming Halo TV series, Showtime President of Programming Gary Levine tells IGN. The series is such an enormous undertaking, the premium cable network is aiming to air the series in 2020.

"We made a conscious decision to hire a writer not known for sci-fi and not known for big battle movies, because that’s already baked into the Halo franchise and we will service that, but we also wanted to ensure that we were getting beneath the formidable armor of the Spartans and really getting inside the team drama so it felt like it belonged on Showtime," Levine added. "As David said, our hopes and dreams are that it will have enormous appeal to Halo fans and will also appeal to Showtime drama fans."

I still think a Halo movie with a similar style to Mad Max Fury Road (bullet point plot with focus on action and journey from A>B>A) would be great.

As a reboot? Or like what marvel does with the MCU?

Gosh I hope Disney partners up with 343, I wanna see MC in Avengers Phase 7

I see it more as stand alone. Personally, I bring up Mad Max Fury Road because I feel like it does a video game movie better than most video game movies.

Have you seen “Made in Abyss” or “Edge of Tomorrow”? Those, in my eyes, are perfect examples of media that does it as good or better than video games. Granted they come from a place where most people aren’t aware of and it feels fresh, if you aren’t already a fan of the source material. Granted one is a bit more (read tons) of exposition whilst the latter is more “show” than “tell”

I have, and it's certainly a good example of that as well.

5 years later after its announced and still nothing to show for it. Netflix should school them into how to release something.

Rupert Wyatt has stepped down as the director and executive producer of the “Halo” series currently in the works at Showtime.

“It’s with great disappointment that changes to the production schedule of ‘Halo’ prevent me from continuing in my role as a director on the series,” Wyatt said in a statement. “My time on ‘Halo’ has been a creatively rich and rewarding experience with a phenomenal team of people. I now join the legion of fans out there, excited to see the finished series and wishing everyone involved the very best.”

Wyatt was attached to direct multiple episodes of the series in addition to executive producing. He previously directed the blockbuster film “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and is currently prepping the film “Captive State” for a March 2019 release.

Showtime’s adaptation of ‘Halo’ is evolving beautifully with rich characters, compelling stories and powerful scripts,” said Gary Levine, Showtime’s president of programming. “Obviously, the production demands of this series are enormous, and we have had to add time to the schedule in order to do it right. Sadly, this delay has created a conflict for Rupert, whom we warmly thank for all he has brought to the project.”

Speaking to The Game Maker’s Notebook podcast (H/T Gamespot), 343 transmedia boss Kiki Wolfkill (yes, that is their real name and, yes, it is impossibly cool), was asked about what the Halo TV show could be compared to in the medium.

Their answer, though, might raise some eyebrows: “"It's hard to find an analog. We talk about Game of Thrones a lot in terms of scope and scale and complexity of relationships,” before expanding that “A lot of the background of Halo is this sort of political drama. It's something that [is mentioned] really lightly in the games… Some of that [Game of Thrones] complexity is interesting."

So, while we shouldn’t be expecting Red Weddings involving Sgt. Johnson, there is a lot we can at least hold out hope for. Epic battles, obviously, should be the first on the list. Imagine Master Chief – who we now know is being played by Pablo Schreiber – weaving through a gallery of Grunts and Brutes as all hell rains down in the background. Goosebumps.

But it might be the political situation that has caught the attention of those who are entrenched in Halo lore. If you don’t know your Covenant from your Cortanas, you might not realise there is a deep, rich history of political and religious intrigue bubbling away in the background in the Halo universe. Setting up that framework for Master Chief’s story, including all the backstabs and betrayals that come with it, could reap rewards in the long run, instead of the Halo TV show just gunning for merely being a one-dimensional video game adaptation.

Hilariously, Wolfkill says the Halo TV show won’t be matching HBO’s fantastic epic in all respects. Namely, there’s “no incest” and that “If you're looking for that, you won't find it here.”

So… yeah. Apart from that, the Halo TV show could be well on its way to filling the Game of Thrones-shaped hole in our heart (and telly boxes).
