E3 2018 Trailer:

Rod Fergusson Talks Gears 5 after E3:

60fps at 4K is their "target"

Our target is always 60fps, and we believe – with everything we’ve done, the learning we’ve taken from Gears 4, and the optimizations we’ve been able to do beyond that – that’s exactly what we’re going to be doing, 60fps at 4K. The new technology of this generation has been fantastic.

Gears of War 5 to Feature More Open-World Elements

I’ve seen all this stuff a bunch of times since E3, but every time I watch I find new details.

Very excited for this one!

I'm still kinda confused as to why I'm so excited for this game compared to the previous ones. 4 was up there but I wouldn't have played it on release if it weren't for my brother.

I think it has to do with the call back to gears of war 2. I maintain that 2 had the best narrative, in plot elements and writing. Now it's coming back to that and it's all much more mysterious than 4 felt, and mystery/suspense is pretty much all it takes to make me interested. In any case, bring on more trailers, gimme the JD drama.

Gears 5 Will Give Players Something They Have Never Seen Before, Says The Coalition

“We’re going to see a bunch of things that are really exciting,” says Rod Ferguson.

Gears of War 4 is a fine game, but criticism is often levelled at it for not being ambitious enough, for hewing too closely to the Gears of War formula and not really trying to do anything that fans of the series haven’t seen before. Gears 5 is looking like it’s going to take that criticism to heart.

Recently, while speaking at the X018 panel for Gears 5, Rod Ferguson, head of developers The Coalition, talked about how with Gears of War 4, the studio was really trying to establish itself as a legitimate developer that could deliver an authentic Gears experience, and that now that they’ve done that, they’re going to take a lot more risks and be a lot more ambitious with Gearss 5.

“One of the things [with Gears of War 4 was], we were a new studio bringing Gears of War back, and we really felt that we had to prove ourselves, that we could make an authentic Gears of War experience,” said Ferguson, echoing similar statements he’s made in the pas as well. “So we didn’t want to go crazy, because then they’d be like ‘these guys don’t know what they’re doing. What’s going on, what happened to our franchise? This isn’t the Gears of War I wanted.’ What we wanted to do for 4 was just re-establish the franchise and establish The Coalition as a legitimate studio. And we’ve been embraced by fans, and they loved Gears 4, and we feel like we’ve accomplished that goal. So now, Gears 5 is about bringing The Coalition’s personality to the game. Now we’re gonna see a bunch of innovation, a bunch of change, a bunch of things things that are really exciting that are really different, but still feel very Gears of War.”

He then went on to talk about how The Coalition’s main aim with Gears 5 has been to provide an experience that exhibits “dramatic contrast” from anything and everything we’ve seen from the series in the past. “Dramatic contrast was the word we used,” Ferguson said. “Part of Gears 5 is dramatic contrast- going from very small cramped spaces to very large open spaces. Going from this desert to a frozen tundra. We wanted you to have throughout your experience constant contrast, and dramatic change.”

Eugene Byrd, the voice of Del Walker, was also in attendance during the panel, and he, too, gave a very interesting snippet that went along with Ferguson’s vision for what Gears 5 is going to be like. “What we’re trying to do with 5 is give you something you haven’t seen,” said Byrd. “I’m gonna leave it at that.”

I played quite a bit of Gears 4, so I'm certainly down for more. Kinda hope they get a bit further away from the boring robot enemies though....

Yeah, I don't know what they were smoking when they decided robots were a good baddie. That said, at least it makes for some variety, and a couple of the new weapons were ok...

Agreed. Gears 4 for me was an ‘almost’ game. Ultimately I think the Coalition played it just a little too safe, and that restraint showed up everywhere, especially with the generic robot army.

It was like they *wanted* to implement more stuff, but either didn’t have time and/or didn’t want to piss off the pre-existing fan base, so they didn’t stray too far from the formula.

Like when Malibu Stacey got a new hat.

I enjoyed it, and it had some great moments, but I’m far more excited for Gears 5. They’ve said they are going to take more risks, they’ve had more time, and the little bit we have seen I’ve loved. Hoping we get some new tidbits soon!

Well, Rod did say that Gears 4 was more to prove that they could make a proper Gears game. They did, but we needed more. Now it's prove that they can be a top tier developer with their own take.

Admittedly I am still a little bummed that Black Tusk got turned into the Gears studio. Even just that little shanghai concept video they put out had me interested to see what they would create, I kinda got Syphon Filter vibes from it, which had my interest piqued, *sigh* what could have been. I am glad we're still getting Gears games though, hoping to see some cool new weapons and hopefully some cool new mechanics.

I want this now. Nothing gets the blood pumping like an intense Gears KOTH match.

Eh, that game never looked particularly inspired to me... unless you consider a complete RIP-off of a Splinter Cell level inspired....

It was weird that it was such a blatant rip of that Double Agent level, but apparently that video was just sort of a pitch to my understanding and not necessarily representative of an actual game they had in development. I wasn't excited about it because of the setting on display but rather the premise of a stealth spy/ agent using high-tech/ advanced weaponry. And also MS having a new IP I might've actually been interested in would've also been nice...

Honestly, the axe looks meh, like the bigger swinging op weapons in dead rising, never liked the look or feel of those, much prefer slicers like a katana or such.
