Is it just me or does anyone else get a jarring slow when getting hit with a red laser from a sniper followed by a continue dialog and then shot off your bike. Every time.
I guess it's just me.

I'm not sure if I know exactly what you mean. When there is a sniper ambush there is a little slow motion effect when they manage to shoot you off your bike, but it's not entirely clear if that is what you meant or if you're having a separate issue where the game has bad frame-rate issues when you're targeted by a sniper's laser. The game does do a slow motion effect when you're shot off your bike and when you get clothes-lined in those ambushes.

Yes every time and it also always brings up a tutorial dialog that I have to hold X on.

A few random observations and questions...

How come they (Deacon et al) don't get infected, if the virus spreads so easily? I'm sure that gets explained somewhere, but I must've missed it.

They did a good job with the NPC banter in camps. Most games don't do that very well -- it comes off stiff or generic or copy/paste. It feels pretty natural here, and the NPCs have their own mini-personalities.

Driving my bike through camp, I like trying to run people over and see them jump/roll out of the way. There are some characters, though, that stand there like stone pillars. You run into them, and it's like crashing into a brick wall.

I'm facing my first horde (as part of the main storyline) and it's not going well, lol. I'll figure it out ...

Finished the game just a few minutes ago. It was good; I enjoyed it. I can't say the storytelling was perfect -- there were quite a few times when I shook my head at the characters' behavior, and there were several instances where things felt staged or emotionally manipulative, rather than genuine. But still, it was an entertaining game, it kept my attention. I appreciated getting a story about a biker. Despite the "another white male protagonist" nonsense, the game actually has a pretty diverse cast. I liked Deacon's character, even though I don't share his values. He was an interesting guy to watch and play as. I always like games and fiction that allows me to feel like I'm experiencing a type of life that I wouldn't ever experience otherwise. It did that pretty well.

I enjoyed the weapons and combat. My only complaint there is that when the action gets hectic (e.g., when fighting a horde), trying to dial up just the right weapon, med kit, cocktail, or whatnot can get pretty tricky. Maybe that's part of the pressure you're supposed to feel in that situation, though.

If I gave it a number, it'd probably be around 8.5. I have to take some points off for the objective technical shortcomings, most especially the framerate drops in the second half of the game. They got pretty frequent and noticeable. I also have to take some points off for the things I mentioned about the story.

I loved the environment. I loved just riding the bike through the mountains.

It took me 6 weeks to play through. I still have a lot of hordes and a couple missions left. I'm not sure if I'll do the hordes. Maybe a few.

Some people said the game felt too long, stretched out. I didn't find that. It was a good length. I did almost all the side content.

You don’t like taking on the Hordes, why not?

I’m just asking because that one promo video comes to mind of the Horde encounter at a sawmill that looked absolutely bonkers. The way the player was able to use the environment as traps against the enemies looked like tense fun. I’m sure they aren’t all set pieces like that one but I’m very much looking forward to that encounter.

I haven’t played the game much lately and have been sidetracked by DMC5 which was part of the E3 sale. But I plan on going back since I was having fun the last time I played. Speaking of the last time I played the game showed me how doing something stupid or without thought will get you punished. I was exploring a Nero research site when I noticed a big oil tanker on the side of the road. I thought “I wonder if this will go boom if I shoot it”. I shot it and sure enough it exploded but it awoke the Horde I had no idea was sleeping nearby and they tore me to pieces. The line “It’s a Trap” immediately popped in my head, haha.

Hah, yeah. ... I wouldn't say I don't taking on the hordes, it's more that 1) I don't have much practice and I'm not good at it, and 2) there are like 20 of them, which is a little overwhelming; I will do a few of them, but I'm not sure I'll do all 20.

The sawmill horde is tough. I got slaughtered several times. After the 4th or 5th defeat, I looked on Youtube for help. I found a stealth approach that used that. The more active, run and gun approach would have been more fun, I'm sure, but I was getting impatient and just wanted to get through it.

p.s. Someone on another forum mentioned that he thought the end-game horde stuff was kind of irritating, because 1) it can take a while to find the horde, track them down, and 2) you go through a lot of your supplies during a horde fight, meaning that between each horde, you have to run around to multiple places, scrounging supplies and re-filling everything. I've found both of those things kind of tedious, too. It's too bad you can't buy supplies (scrap, bottles, etc.) in any of the camps.

Yeah they should offer more things at the camp shops for sure, finding those large bottles for napalm Molotov's and gun powder can be pretty time consuming but they also help a lot with the stuff you need to take our hordes.

I'm surprised at how much the game continues (story-wise) beyond the end of the main mission.

I started up a second playthrough. I did the first part of the game on easy last time, so I'm plyaing it on normal this time.

I'm about 5 or 6 hours in. Almost to Level 2 Trust at Copeland's.

I played for a few hours yesterday and I was really digging it. The game world is super immersive and I like exploring for supplies or helping people I come across and really like riding the bike. I haven’t run into a major complaint from others about the Bike needing constant maintenance. A few repairs here and there and fuel has been easy to find so its no biggie. But then I got frustrated with things which made me switch off the game and contemplate just giving up on this title that has so much potential.

The first thing to bother me was I was trying to clear a bandit camp and its positioned right above a freaker nest. So I tried to take out the camp first but apparently if the baddies spot me and start shooting they wake the freakers who come charging for me and seem to ignore the filthy scavengers. I figured ok, I’ll take out the nest first. Throw a Molotov and as soon as the freakers come my way I start getting shot from behind from the bandits.

I tried to lure the freakers out so they would attack the bandits at the camp but they ignore the bandits and come straight for me. So frustrating to have only one way to complete this task which seems to be to stealth kill all enemies. Things wouldn’t be so bad if the shooting isn’t so terrible in this game. Seriously, how the hell did the developers believe the shooting mechanics are acceptable. Its no wonder this game is getting trashed on by so many online because in certain areas the game is more frustrating than fun.

The shooting in this game reminds me of Guerilla Games Killzone franchise. They wanted so bad to be different from other shooters that they over complicated things and made the shooting feel like crap. All their excuses about how they wanted to add weight and depth to shooting meant nothing to players who felt like they were fighting against the gun they were using, a few patches made things better but it didn't even need to get to that point. Its the same here in Days Gone no matter what gun I use there is just this struggle to be precise in a game that requires precision to be an effective survivor of the apocalypse.

I had a lot of trouble with that bandit camp, too, my first time playing. I died a few times, then eventually got it done. Lots of stealth required.

The guns in the beginning of the game are pretty bad. Once you unlock a couple trust levels and get some good guns and more focus, it gets better.

For that bandit camp with the freaker nest below it, I died my first try as well, but once I realized there was a freaker nest down there, I snuck around to the far side, shot one of the bandits with a poison bolt, making him attack his mates, which caused the freakers to go aggro to them, leaving me on the other side to come up behind them and get the drop on the small horde...

That's good. I think I went the long way, with stealth. I'm on my second playthrough, so I'll have to do it again. I'm thinking use an attractor then molotov. That should bring the freakers down on them.

They're pretty stupid, to build their camp over a freaker nest. I mean, what do you expect?

It's like the horror movies where they build everything over an indian burial ground. WCGW?

This game reminds me a lot of how I feel about Red Dead Redemption 2. A game I was very much looking forward to but in the end put down without finishing. The both of these games suffer from the same problem in my opinion, pacing. Days Gone......for me at least swings wildly from fun to frustrating and/or boring and it has me saying to myself "this game is just not for me". I went from a fun stealth mission that culminated in a battle against a Bear which was awesome to a hunting mission that became frustrating because the freakn Deer like to run hundreds of yards away from my bike leaving me with a long trek to recover it.

I hardly ever do this but I switched the game off midway through the hunting mission because of boredom and frustration. The funny thing is this game has me thinking perhaps its time for me to go back to State of Decay 2 on Xbox. That's a game without the high production values of Days Gone but was loads of fun and its received quite a few content updates since I last played. I used to be a graphics whore and still am to a certain extent but I won't play a game just because its pretty.

I'm still enjoying my second playthrough. I'm about 8 to 10 hours in.

It's "a major success for Sony."

NPD: Days Gone Is Now The 8th Best Selling Game In 2019 Behind RDR2

Days Gone has become the 8th best selling game in 2019 ahead of multiplatform games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice proving it is a major success for Sony.

Days Gone launched with lukewarm review scores but that didn’t manage to stop the sales of the game. It had solid legs not just in North America but also in most of the major countries of the world including Japan and the UK. As a result, it seems to have done well for itself despite being a new IP that didn’t get critical praise.

Days Gone is from Sony Bend Studio and it was launched on April 26, exclusively for the PS4. It launched within a couple of days of Mortal Kombat 11 which is a multiplatform release and currently the best selling game in 2019 according to the NPD group.

I played up until right before you unlock the third area, then took a break to play through Rage 2. Last week I started up the game and played a few missions/side quests into the third area and feel like giving up the game. I figured the issues I had with the game before would go away after taking a break, but there's a few too many things in the game that irk me to the point of just not having fun while playing it. Won't have time to game at all the next couple of days so might try it one more time again and if I feel the same way I may be giving it up as well.

Pretty damned good for a game that's only available on one console and is a new IP from a small studio.

Like yourself I feel like giving the game another chance. There are some really good things about the game but other things I just don't like, the shooting is one of my biggest issues with the game. But someone said there are better guns and I know we can slot ability points in the firearms tree which could solve my biggest issue with this game. To be honest the game even though its been in development for so long doesn't feel like it was ready for release. A few more months of spit and polish I think would have gone a long way to make this game even better. I'm going to try again soon and if the game doesn't click for me then I'll just chalk it up to the first Sony first party game in a while to disappoint and move on. Sony still has a great track record.

These survival games I think are tough to get right. They are the opposite of most games which are power fantasies. But if you feel too weak and vulnerable things can get frustrating. I just started Metro Exodus which is another survival shooter but I don't feel as weak as I did playing Days Gone.

Bend is hiring a producer for AAA title. I think that confirms a Days Gone sequel for the PS5.

I'm about three quarters done with my second playthrough. Been playing a couple hours per day. I'm really enjoying the hordes this time.

I'd say I enjoyed the second run more than the first, although I enjoyed the first a lot. I enjoy the basic gameplay loop -- the driving to destinations, the combat (melee and weapons), even the crafting. It's all good. Story is good, too, although I'm skipping most of the cutscenes.

My most major gripe with the game is the lack of hip fire. I do not like aiming being required to shoot and melee being R2 when not aiming.

Awesome. I'd say it's my second favorite game of the generation. Just finished my 2nd playthrough. Probably put 100+ hrs. into it.

Final rating 8.5, with enjoyment level higher but score brought down by technical problems.

I bought this 2 months ago and haven't opened it yet. I'm probably gonna save it to play this fall when absolutely nothing I care about will be released.

When you get around to playing it, I'd encourage you to be patient with it. The first 10 hours are the most difficult and the part most likely to annoy, aggravate, or otherwise turn people off.
