Xbox Rumors and Speculation

In the realm of developer acquisition, has anyone mentioned Iron Galaxy? I know they released a stinker with Extinction but Compulsion Games released two back to back terrible games and got acquired. I've got more faith in them working on Killer Instinct and another new IP than I do Compulsion.

I know. To be honest, they should've been in there already. They did an amazing job with KI.

I thought Contrast was pretty well received? Not my type of game though.

It may have sold well, as I can't find any data on it. But the reception from critics and gamers was not great.

Whoa. I am enjoying We Happy Few quite a bit.

I'm actually in the same boat as @Gzprime2, don't go in much for the indie titles (I got my friend pedro through gamepass but haven't played it much) so looking at MS's acquisitions doesn't give me as much hope for the future as it would for those who are into the AA and lower markets....

I'm kinda agree with you. While I'm high on their Obsidian and Undead labs acquisition, alot of these games that the rest of the studios are showing or developing have that AA/indie/small team feel. That doesn't move the needle for me. Not nearly enough to purchase a new $400/$500 console for. Now they could come out and surprise me with some huge earth shattering AAA game but it has yet to be seen.

Of all their new studios I'm most looking forward to seeing what their actual new studio The Initiative are doing. Saw some concept art from one of their hires on GAF that looked interesting but didn't exactly blow my balls off, but it's not clear if they were even related to what the studio is actually working on. Fingers crossed the game they're making is something I will be into, based on the staffing they've got it suggests the genre is in my wheelhouse.... I am also hoping Playgrounds action RPG whether it's Fable or something new is good...

In my world they’d open up another studio near the initiative so it could be a sister studio and share info, due to proximity...cos all the other studios have neighboring studios near-ish to them.

Ninja Theory is indeed looking to be putting out an AAA title with Hellblade 2. Obsidian is obviously an AAA studio. We know the Initiative is focused on what they themselves said is AAAA. The new Playground Games group apparently is working on a AAA RPG. We know that AAA games will always come from Coalition, 343, Playground Games, Turn 10.

We also know that MS said they are growing the new studios they acquired and give them carte blanche on budgets.

All 15 studios seem to be covering all the needed bases from AAAA to indie. AAAA or Indie isn't what makes a game good. It's the game. I would much rather have an Indie like Ori and the Will of the Wisps than say Death Stranding.

Just remember that Undead Labs and Obsidian didn't have MS money to make Outer Worlds and SoD2. I believe that either Major Nelson or Phil said that Obsidian has a AAA game in development and that Outer Worlds wasn't their AAA game.

Im rocking SoD2 now and, Jeez! That game is fun! Really fun. I hop on, thinking Ill play for a couple of hours and be on that mug for like, 3 or four. I have to pull myself away. Cant wait to see what these guys do with a healthy budget and resources.

It's not that long ago they had to rely on a Kickstarter to get Pillars of Eternity made, too.

Something they should make sure to do is get all these studios' titles lined up with an appropriate cadence of release timing. It's already a bit odd to have announced that there will be no next-gen only titles for a year+, but once they do start coming, I think it'd be smart of them to have at least one if not 2 first party exclusives come out every year, and with all the studios they've got now that's not an unreasonable suggestion...

Agreed. Undead and Obsidian have been able to make great games on a kickstarter or shoestring budget. Same with InXile and Ninja Theory. My bone is with Compulsion. IMO they have not proven that they can make a good game let alone a hit. Now with MS resources they could very well turn into Xbox's version of Guerrilla Games, but it remains to be seen.
