Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said it will expand its TV programming beyond the show based on its best-selling “Halo” game as it tries to position the new Xbox One console as a portal for games, videos and music.

Phil Spencer, corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios, declined to elaborate in an interview in Tokyo today before the Tokyo Game Show. Microsoft is returning to the show this year as it competes against Sony Corp. (675:cool:’s new PlayStation 4 console and online games in a $63 billion industry.

Xbox One is an attempt to merge TV watching with video game playing as Microsoft teams with partners including the National Football League to offer features such as viewing highlights and game scores. To underscore that broader approach, Microsoft is producing a live-action “Halo” show, in which director Steven Spielberg will be involved, and has a production team in Los Angeles developing concepts.

“They have literally hundreds of ideas that they are incubating right now,” Spencer said. “We will have some new announcement for TV shows coming pretty soon.”

Microsoft and Sony are betting that faster machines allowing for features such as motion capture and immersive graphics will lure consumers whose tastes are shifting toward mobile games played on tablets and smartphones. The Redmond, Washington-based company, which is buying Nokia Oyj (NOK1V)’s handset unit, is strengthening a push into hardware as demand weakens for programs such as Windows that made it the world’s largest software maker.

Imagine an interactive Dora the Explorer. You know how fast that s*** is gonna pass now that TV is interactive?

Cool. Good entertainment is always something to look forward to.

I think this is a really underestimated feature. So many people dont know how much access the have to TV shows and movies already through Xbox Video. My girlfriend had no idea she could do this and shes had an Xbox for a few years now.

I would love some TV shows based on games. Recently I've been hooked with TV series and I've desperately wanted one based on video games. There's MK: Legacy but it's kinda cheap being a web series and Defiance which wasn't bad but the game sucked. Also if you can interact with them even better. That's why Quantum Break is probably my most anticipated game. I would love an Alan Wake series with it's own game.

Doesn't interest me in the least. Then again, there are Sony TV studios that don't interest me. I won't let that deter me from enjoying the gaming on the consoles. I will however, keep an eye on WHAT shows they are bringing.

A gritty pixar like Fable or Gears series.... Yeah noone wants those eh? Puuuleeease. :bang:

So much wasted effort and money. SMH
People said the same type of stuff when Netflix started making shows..and while not all were good they have gotten some great ones out there.

This isn't going to take away to what they do with the X1, it will enhance it. MS has the money to pull out some great series if the wanted to...maybe even the eventual Halo Movie when the rights revert back and if the TV stuff does well.

Yeah but we're talking about MS. They never innovate. They're always last to the party. Zune, Windows phones, Surface, etc.

sadly, no Blakes 7....

There's nothing to the rumours that the Blake's 7 reboot is coming to Xbox according to Microsoft's Kate Barnes...

As reported previously, there have been rumours that Georgeville and Syfy's planned Blake's 7 reboot has found a home with Xbox, amidst Microsoft's plans to broadcast exclusive original content via Xbox Live.

At the Edinburgh TV Festival, during a talk about new programme platforms, Kate Barnes was present in her capacity as Executive Producer at Microsoft's EMEA TV. Den of Geek asked her directly about Blake's 7. She had this to say:

"I think the rumours took on a lot of speed because sci-fi is obviously something at the heart of Xbox, but no, there's nothing to that."

Apparently no programming has been confirmed bar the already announced Halo TV series which was described as having obvious appeal as the console's biggest franchise.

The core demographic mentioned at the TV Festival was aimed at 16 - 35 year olds, with potential projects not limited by genre, and programmes could have interactive content to appeal to gamers. While Blake's 7 is something that would appeal to those ages, many fans of the original fall outside that target audience. It does seem unlikely that Xbox would risk irking a potential audience who might not have a console with which to view the reboot.

Well the reason it works for Netflix is because any device can be used to watch Netflix TV/Movies. In order for MS to reproduce what Netflix has done they're going to need to put Xbox Video on PS3/PS4/Wii/Wii U/Apple TV/Roku/iOS/Android.

You've never used a WP if you think its not innovative..the fact that iOS and Google are starting to incorporate bits of Metro is a sign that it was something good. WP is the evolution of Windows Mobile..which was around before iOS and Google btw.

Well they brought Xbox Music to iOS and Android, maybe they will start taking Xbox Video to other platforms. Smartglass has made it's way to other platforms too.

I hope for their sake, because if they don't put Xbox Video on all those platforms and more then it's going to be dead in the water. But I feel they'll try to keep it an Xbox One/360 thing to mark it as some sort of "feature."

If they go the original programming route, I can't see them limiting it to just Xbone users.

I just hope whatever they produce is good.

I doubt this "takes away from gaming".. more like "if MS doesn't expand profitability of their Xbox products they'll abandon all of it someday."

It's like nobody has paid attention to how neither MS or Sony are actually raking in profits the last decade or so. It's a crap-ton of revenue and brand exposure, but with so much investment that their are serious questions about whether either company is "in the black" overall for their last gen consoles.

This TV stuff will likely at least be expanded to MS's mobile devices, and I really see no reason it wouldn't eventually come to other devices.

MS has dabbled in TV and other entertainment for almost 2 decades now (MSNBC was originally a 50/50 MS and NBC partnership for instance.)

Regardless of how innovative their mobile OS is, they not only allowed Apple to get marketshare, but also Android. Then they panicked and slapped together a product. What's funnier is the Nokia deal. Microsoft is too reactionary. Xbox Music? How many people are going to use that service? Honestly? Did they allow Pandora and Spotify to grab the largest marketshare because they wanted to come out with a better product? And while Smartglass is an ok "feature", why didn't they bring Surface out before the iPad? Another reactionary waste of $1 billion. Microsoft fights, but it's practically always after 3rd place.

Marketshare only says how popular a product is, not whether it is innovated or even a better product. IMO WP is better than iOS and Android, Surface is a better product than the iPad, especially the surface pro.

None of it is a waste, not sure how you see launching products after someone else is a waste...would you like to see these industries run by monopolies?

Right. I never use my Xbox Music....if at all.

Xbox Music is a great service. So many people I know use it quite often mate. Pandora and Spotify aren't on gaming consoles so I'm not sure where I see the problem with Microsoft creating their own service and slapping the Xbox brand on it. And just my opinion but the Surface is hot, not to mention Windows 8. Smh.

Great, you and some Xbox 360 gamers use it. My point is that it will never take off. Popularity is kind of an indication of how well the product will do. MS in in the business of making money. It's their job to sell products. LOL

So about Xbox TV, can you imagine the cool s*** they might bring to the table? I want them to make it interactive, like that Ravin Rabbids show. If that ain't innovating, sheet, I don't know what is.

Every product you've mentioned happens to be doing quite well, especially the Surface with the recent price drops. Not sure where your getting your numbers from mate but you may want to look again. Now I'd like to ask a question if I may: do you have any information stating that either of these products aren't popular or are you shakin' the 8 Ball to come up with your responses? Just askin....

Seems like you need to pay more attention?

The price drop was because Surface soled horribly.. like.. really really bad.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/30/microsoft_surface_sales_disaster/

MS hasn't hyped any post price drop sales either.

According to the report, Microsoft's total Surface revenue for all of fiscal 2013 amounted to just $853m. That's nearly $50m less than the $900m charge Redmond took when it discounted its remaining Surface RT inventory by $150 per box.

And that's not all. That $900m writedown was related to Surface RT only, but the $853m revenue figure includes sales of Surface RT and Surface Pro combined.

That's like.. crazy bad.

Their overall revenue is less than the money they lost refunding retailers for the price drop.

YIKES.

My bad. Last I saw there was an increase in sales but this was a little while ago. Either way it is a better tablet than the Ipad however. I enjoy it immensely.

Shhhhh, Surface isn't doing bad. It's doing good actually. Things nobody says.
