Unreal Engine 5 demo running on PS5

MS take notes.

Both machines will do this, and apparently it's built to scale as small as mobile.

EDIT: though to be fair, Sony isn't showing this, Epic is.

This is the most impressive tech I've ever seen... Each of those statues has 33MILLION polygons! Zero lods. Unlimited geometry. UE5 is incredible.

I'm geeking out hard, people!

Gamers should realize all of those bells and whistles are great, but they come with a trade-off: fps. I would love it if developers would give console gamers more flexibility and options to choose performance over ultra-visual effects.

Iol, I just put this vid up in the multiplat section. Amazing Tech! And since it''s running on a real dev-kit, We may just see similar fidelity. I'm so blown away by it. This is what we want to see in next gen. UE 5 will be very common this comming gen. Wow.

It‘a great, but it just makes me want to see an actual game that much more now.

DF said that demo was running at 2560x1440................

Yup.

“And that, in a nutshell, is the definition of a micro-polygon engine. The cost in terms of GPU resources is likely to be very high, but with next-gen, there's the horsepower to pull it off and the advantages are self-evident. Rendering one triangle per pixel essentially means that performance scales closely with resolution. "Interestingly, it does work very well with our dynamic resolution technique as well," adds Penwarden. "So, when GPU load gets high we can lower the screen resolution a bit and then we can adapt to that. In the demo we actually did use dynamic resolution, although it ends up rendering at about 1440p most of the time."

I love how there was no pop in during that quick flight scene at the end, I'm more satisfied reading that you can actually "play" this demo vs it just being some scripted thing where it only runs one way. Clearly a game with AI running and enemies would be more taxing but this does look awesome. If you look at some UE4 demos before PS4 launched we ended up getting games that looked even better later in the generation, hopefully that'll be the case here too.

Now that is what I want to see from the next generation consoles. Blown away by that showing and to hear that’s running in real time on the PS5 is great to hear. Give me games at 1440p all day long if they look like that. The only downside is this is making the wait for release that much more painful.

I went back recently and looked at the unreal engine videos released at the start of last gen and definitely agree that games did live up to and in the end surpass those tech demos. Bodes well for this generation.

As a UE4 Dev, I am more concerned if my asserts & programming (Blueprint) can be carried over without much problem. or even supported. In any case, I will stick to UE4 until my game is done.

Surprising, that demo looked liked it had RT..? Also for 1440p and 30 FPS it still looked great.

Merged and moved thread to multi platform discussion.
On a side note as impressive as the demo is I want to see full game code running with that fidelity i.e. AI, physics, ray tracing, etc before I get excited. Tech demos don’t do it for me.

Are people happy with this kind of visual if you have to sacrifice 60fps? Cuz this is running at 30. I know I'm cool with it, but how about the 60fps or bust people?

I love tech demos, lol.

It's also not showing much in the way of foliage either. Dense, static rock as well. Still, this is the kind of thing that gets my imagination going, and the tech itself certainly looks incredible...

I can honestly see myself upgrading my PC is this 30fps thing is still going to be a thing. I try not to be an FPS snob, but I play games like RDR2 and Jedi Fallen Order on console framerates and I just can't. I re-bought RDR2 on PC and love it, and am planning on getting Jedi on sale at some point. Even on an X1X and PS4 Pro the FPS is just too slow for me.

It is weird though as some games feel ok. I can play AC:Odyssey at 30fps and it isn't perfect but is playable. Other 30 fps games just feel so "janky". Jedi even in "performance mode" still runs like garbage on my console. I seriously doubt it is even hitting 30 in combat.

I mean I'll probably preorder an Xbox either way, but I'm a lot less excited.

I don't think they should be console players, we haven't had 60fps as a standard framerate on consoles since the OOOOLLLDD days lol. I'm sure racing, fighting, sports and most MP shooters will still go for 60 like they do now but these big AAA blockbuster games that want to show off visually will probably still opt for 30fps. This is the thing, when people think next gen they always think visuals first, showing them almost current gen looking games running at 60fps isn't going to excite people, showing them something that looks like this will.

Also this was a playable tech demo, they didn't have a team sitting there working on it for years like a developer would so I'm guessing devs could tinker around with it, focus on some things more than others, sacrifice a little of the visual "wow" factor and still improve performance if they wanted to. Looking back at the UE4 demos for PS4, Sony's first party studios all surpassed the quality of those graphics fairly quickly, so I'm guessing they'll be able to do the same with this in time.

This does get me excited to see what Guerrilla's next game is going to look like, Killzone Shadow Fall for all of the knocks on it as a game still stands out visually today and Horizon only upped the wow factor.
