Lockhart having the same CPU, I/O, and feature set should mean everything that can be done in terms of game design on Series X should be possible on Lockhart minus resolution and ray tracing. A legit pushback to that assumption....that DF seemed to hint that if you didn't take advantage of the hardware based ray tracing, you could use those GPU CUs for physics or ML. Trying to find out if this limits those options or if those things were always 100% CPU.

Lock Hart will do Ray Tracing.
It is an RDNA2 GPU.

The texture data usage sounds a bit iffy. It says it attempts to, which implies inconsistent to me. That in turn makes your second and fourth bulletpoints kind of void.

Even if they have to load in extra mips levels as a buffer, that's still a while lot smaller than the whole texture file.

This what got my attention

The Microsoft executive also suggested that the mere I/O speed of the Xbox Series X (which is inferior to that of the PlayStation 5, according to the official specifications) doesn't tell the full story.

Things go beyond the numbers that we may or may not share. Sampler Feedback Streaming (SMS) allows us to load textures and makes the SSD drive act as a multiplier of physical memory that adds to the memory that the machine itself has.

We also have a new API called Direct Storage that gives us low-level direct access to the NVMe controller so that we can be much more efficient in managing those I / O operations.

I'm still mind boggled over the discussion still about the series x not being a better specced console for videogames.... I guess it's the same delusion xbots had with the cloud and overclocked cpu, making magical situations where the xbox would somehow crush the ps4.

All the media sites confirm that the XSX is the more powerful. There isn't a debate.

To ge fair, Xcloud could have made a big difference in some areas in some games, but yeah, overall it wss never going to overcome its shortfalls in general.

You're reading the word "attempts" wrong in this context. It's saying when a game attempts to load high res textures it's waiting there in direct storage. It's not saying it will attempt to load anything and hope it loads.

I never read it that way. I read it as it will attempt to use only the portion needed rather than loading in more than is needed.

It reads as, 'When an attempt is made to break into a house, the alarm will sound.,' not 'When the house is broken into, the alarm will attempt to sound.'

It will attemp to target the data needed. If that attempt fails it will load more than is needed.

Make that a foursome
I'll be furthers back
