What can I get out of "next gen" if I'm poor?

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, and also sorry if this is just some dude whining.

But I've never felt like this before about "next gen" consoles and my finances.

I have a 1080p tv. I have an entry level receiver that has 4k passthrough, and I have an Xbox One.

I have no money. This will be the first console release since the OG Xbox where I literally could not afford to "jump in"

I have a "gaming PC" with a 1070ti, plenty of RAM and solid state drives. But I found out I'm not big on PC gaming, desktop should last me the next 10 years for regular stuff though so not regretting it.

But what would be the point of getting a PS5 or Xbox series X if I'm playing at 1080p on a TV?

I'd need a new TV and I'd be looking at a Sony HF950? (just an example) at 55", That's $1500 with tax if I find a good deal. I'd then also need to upgrade my A/V reciever to a current one, low end. That's probably another $400, and then one of the consoles. So let's add another $700.

Just to jump in. We're talking near $3000.

Will I be ok just sticking with my Xbox One at 1080p? Or will it hit a point where I can't get great experiences from new games because of my gear?

Anyone else feeling this? Just curious. I'd usually be able to swing the latest console, and perhaps I could, but if I can't afford a new TV and A/V is it going to matter if I go in for one of the new consoles?

Thanks.

Get a job.

Go with the Sony 900h 55, just got one and currently setting it up lol it was just two dollars and some change under a thousand bucks. Oh and that’s how I learned about taxes carry from city to city here in socal 😣

VaLLiancE could probably give ya more input.

receiver could wait but this is a nice budget simple one I’m highly considering

And you may have a chance at winning one...

Get a job.

I'm not being super serious about this just being honest.

I HAVE f***ING JOB though just so you know. I haven't had any "work from home" s*** or been laid off. Nothing has changed.

Just somehow this next gen requires a 4k TV, and an A/V that can pass the latest, and the console and it really adds up.

I don't mind completely useless responses though :) I'm not a serious guy so thanks for telling me to get something I already have.

There are several other things in my life that require semi-significant investment that I'm having a hard time figuring out where my priorities lie. And I'm thinking gaming has somehow gone way down on the list as I get older, but I don't want that to happen and yet it's happening.

I mean, I just got into golf this year and I'm eyeballing a new set of irons for next year for example, and even that is a pipe dream really.

I've never felt like this before and might have to sell my body.

I kinda know where I'd go if I were to upgrade my TV and A/V.

Let's say I have a Sony HX850 LCD and a Yamaha A/V, is there any point in getting a Xbox series X?

I guess I'm asking if 1080p will be improved in a noticeable manner.

I'm years off from upgrading my TV and A/V unit.

Serious advice? I'm a Senior Software Engineer and make very good money but I still cut out things that I don't need or I know I won't have the time for.

Skip out on next gen until you are ready. These consoles are going to be around for slightly less than a decade.

I might also add prioritize your platforms of choice and (if possible) get rid of any overlap. For instance, my PC is more powerful than either next gen console so I'm not getting both (only getting the PS5 and that probably won't change). It would be redundant for MY situation (plus I am a PC gamer at heart.)

That said just jump in when you're ready. Your PC isn't horrible by any means so you will still be able to enjoy next gen games with good visuals as long as your CPU is not a potato.

Ok this is some nice comforting advice, because it feels like it's gonna be years before I can upgrade fully to what the new consoles are trying to do.

But I'm still curious what the advancements would be for people still playing on a 1080p system? Is it worth it?

Well from a purely performance perspective all your games are going to run 60fps @ 1080p. Quality of life improvements with the I/O speeds on these consoles means loading is going to be quick.

Granted.....the majority of the upgrades are graphical and framerate in scale, the little things will also make it a better experience. However, I mean if you aren't in the market to splurge on a 4K/120 set you can always get a Xbox Series S, which would be more than enough for 1080p/60fps and be slightly better than your PC in some respects...(again I don't know the full specs of your PC so all this is just conjecture.)

I won't give financial advice, I'm a caregiver who gets paid nothing and have been for about 10 years, the little money I have saved from before or little bits I get here and there go to gaming simply because it's the only form of entertainment I have in my life. I'm pretty much stuck at home all the time because my Mom is sick and has been having issues for a long time, the only time I really get to leave is quick trips to the store for the most part. The only reason I can afford to jump in right now is the PS5 digital is $400 and gamestop is giving around $200 trade in towards next gen from PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, I'll be trading my Pro in and have already paid the cash portion.

Man, I hate that I left out that "a" when I said I have f***ing job.

LOL.

Can anyone please tell me that Xbox series X will be awesome even on a 1080p system? (also PS5 and whatever latest GPU on a PC for example)

I'm asking someone to enable me.....

ENABLE ME! Also I've only got one "client" Swede and that is my life-partner. NOT INTEREST$ED if that's what you're implying.

Ok, so at 1080p, all the next gen games will run at max and the load times will be noticeably short basically? Yeah I might be too worried about all the latest technologies if that's the case. Fast loads and responsiveness might be enough to justify it.

Pretty much. You won't notice much graphically until you upgrade to a newer TV. However, the constant performance uplift and the snappiness of either system will be readily visible and apparent.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do with your money, just giving you some ideas on how you can prioritize your enjoyment without having to break the bank at the outset.

I purchased a new TV a year ago in part 1. I needed one and 2. The cost of one big next gen jump (TV plus console) scared me off a bit. Considering “next gen” is cross gen, better frame rates and enhanced patches I think holding of is a easy choice in the near future if money is a concern.

I haven't even owned a TV in over 10 years.

After the Recession in 2008 I became a truck driver starting out longhaul. So going mobile I eventually went with a gaming laptop. I'm more local now, but still have my ASUS Republic of Gamers laptop. I mostly play Mortal Kombat 11 but also have DooM: Eternal and both play fine. I even use a XBox One controller.

Not sure what the issue is with gaming on your PC? I feel I still have access to games I like. Maybe it's a different community experience?

I have no plans to upgrade and will see how long my laptop lasts; it's still going strong.

Not sure I have advice really, but just to share some of us have different situations. My problem is a lack of time for it with my long work hours.

Don't lie to the man.
A 1070 ti is dated before these consoles launch after is going to be pretty bad for him.

1070ti is not dated for the resolution he is playing at. 1080p. Facts.

A GTX 1060 is actually better for 1080p.
@ 1080p a Xbox Series S or even a 1070 isn't going to hurt him. When games start getting more demanding as the gen goes on he will need to upgrade. Which is why in the here and now he should be good at that resolution.

Yes it is and it will be even worse when the PC gets ports of "next gen" ports.
You are not thinking of next gen.

Nope. They are still developing for BASE Xbox One and BASE PS4. Those 2 consoles couldn't keep up with a 1070 if they tried. My point stands. At the outset of next gen as long as cross platform games are still a thing...he will be fine with his PC setup.

First of all, if you decide that upgrading isn't in your budget, you're not going to be missing a whole lot for the next couple of years. But there are cheaper options too. When the X1 launched we had a great projection 1080i tv that had been great to us, but it didn't support any of the output resolutions from X1 other than 480p, but we weren't ready to do a proper upgrade so we picked up a black friday LG that was 1080 p and while not great, it got the job done. I actually picked up a 4k/60 monitor from Dell for the X1X to (and PC) since we still weren't ready to upgrade on the main tv. Do these consoles really bring it on high end tvs? Sure. But scanning the black friday deals or other hand for lower end 4k sets of that fits the budget and your plan is a reasonable start. We did finally upgrade on the tv last year, fwiw, and with all this tech, it ended up being a year too soon since Samsung are not enabling full hdmi 2.1 after all on the Q90R. 🤮

Just continue to play the existing games you missed. There are enough games not to be bothered with Nextgen unless you are the type that needs to get game day 1.

I have a 1080p TV as well, & I refuse to upgrade unless it breaks. It's kinda an upbringing thing. My parents refused to buy me shiny stuff the other cools kids have, so I have to save up with my pocket money for every s*** I wanted. When I go out at the weekend, I have enough money only for a happy meal & transport. It become a habit when I grew up. I don't spend money unless I need to.

I regularly put the games I like on wishlist & only waiting for discounts to get them, or just find what are on the bargain bins of game stores & electronic stores.

YOu can definitely save a lot of money if you buy games on discounts and share games with others.
