Help Picking a New TV

I just got mine in yesterday. Seems great so far 75 in is just the right size.

And yes, I'm guessing the TV does support VRR as I got an alert from the TV or Xbox, can't remember which, that said it was recognized as having VRR capability.

Also, I didn't realize my TV was the Bravia X990H, so that was a nice surprise. Of course, I turned all the motion garbage that messes with latency, because boy does it.

Alright, I need to tell people interested in this TV. There are a LOT of to tweak with this TV. Even some audio features affect latency. There are a TON of audio issues.

It does support 4k 120, but there is a terrible audio bug If you have it enabled. I can't run 4k /120 without a really annoying audio stutter.

Here is hoping Sony fix this s***. Honestly, it makes me think of CDPR and cyberpunk. They should get Hella flak for these issues. Makes my old Samsung even more amazing in retrospect.

Edit: that said, the picture is great, and once you figure out the issues, it's a good tv. I. Just shocked that Sony, a hardware company for so long, can still have such blatant issues.

Honestly, the latency issues brought about by an audio setting is ridiculous. I cannot run 4k/120 without audio stutter, making it super aggravating.

Try my settings

I have none of what you are experiencing.

I've been looking for a new TV to go with the new consoles. From the limited research I've done the Sony A90J seems to offer the best picture quality but sill doesn't offer VRR support and only has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, apparently it also has issues displaying 4k/120 in Dobly Vision. The LG C1 comes with 4 2.1 ports, has VRR and ALLM and its been said by some to be the best gaming TV on the market right now. But it doesn't have the picture quality of the Sony equivalent but is significantly cheaper than the Sony. You'd think that for the price Sony would at least offer more than 2 HDMI 2.1 ports but nope.

I absolutely love my LG C8, blows away any other TV I've ever owned. Incredible PQ for movies and gaming. Sucks I don't have VRR or 4k/120fps (only 1080p/120fps), but 0 complaints otherwise.

No remote hint of burn in at all in over 2 years of use. I picked it up at Best Buy and threw down for whatever their Geek Squad coverage is, so if it ever does get burn in or a pixel dies, Best Buy is giving me an equivalent new LG OLED.

Nice.

The threat of burn in is concerning for these OLED TVs. I watched a video of this guy who kept an animated movie paused for an hour on his LG C1 in an effort to produce burn in. And when he resumed playback you could see a slight ghost image indicating some image retention but it quickly resolved its self. I don't think I've ever kept a movie paused for so long so that's one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards the 55" LG C1.

In my heart I really want another Sony TV. But their prices as well as limited features is pushing towards their competitors. How do you like LG Web OS? I'm used to Google TV and I have no idea how user friendly Web OS is.

Didn't take too long to get used to. I spend so much time messing with settings, adjusting brightness, sound modes, etcl, that it became second nature fairly quick. I highly suggest watching some videos from places like HDTV Test that walk through the settings menus and show their suggested setup.

For streaming apps, the Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney +, Hulu, and Youtube all work great. It doesn't have the deepest options for apps, but you can find everything else on your consoles or another streaming device (FireStick, Roku, Chromecast, etc.).

The pixel shift function really does wonders to avoid burn in. Unless I'm playing one game with a bright HUD for hours and hours and hours, I've never even noticed screen retention. Goes away super quick if you watch or play something else, and pretty much immediately if you run the white to black wave process (I forget the name) on the TV.

I still really like my Sony TV too, still have it and use it in another room. That said, the LG was a pretty obvious and major step up in picture quality and performance from what we both had. Sony has some great new TV's now too though, I'm sure what ever you choose will feel like a massive upgrade.

I'm with you. I bought a CX this year despite my wariness of burn in. Caught a sale at Best Buy and got the protection plan just in case of burn in. As someone who has owned high end lcds and plasma, this CX has the best picture I've EVER seen.

Mind you I still use my Sony x950G for family gaming and movies as well and it is a very capable tv, but the CX is all mine for my use alone in my study.

The C1 is amazing i bought the 77’‘. 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs, VRR, very low input lag. Sonys a little better in PQ but not thousands of dollars better.

Hundreds better you mean?
It's a better TV and unless money is a issue nobody should choose the LG.
Nah I bought my 77” C1 for $3400 at Best Buy, that’s cheaper than the 65” A90J. Sony only has 2 2.1 inputs one of which is the earc port (Doh) LG has 2.1 gaming features out of the box, not in a promised firmware that Sony still hasn’t delivered to their LCD customers from a year ago. $4000 for a 65” lol

The actual PHYSICAL quality of the Sony TVs (the way they are built) are better than all others IMO.

Pruned some posts. The topic of this thread is Help picking a new TV, not:
  1. Who is a shill for what company
  2. Who knows more than who
  3. Rebuttals with name calling
Sorry BUSTERMAN that some of your posts got caught in the crossfire.

Apologies for violating the rules.

I appreciate all the views/opinions from others and especially from those who know more than I do. I'm still in the process of making a choice even though I'm leaning towards a certain brand. But this thread has been really helpful to me. I want to take my time and get it as close to right as I possible can.

I don't purchase TVs that often.

Grab the LG CX OLED at your preferred size and be done with it. LCD is a terrible display technology that tries to compensate for it's piss poor contrast levels and weak low level API performance with FALD zones. This more often than not leads to blooming and crushed blacks. Tack on the screen uniformity lottery and you have a display that should be avoided at all costs.

I had a 75" Sony xbr900E that had terrible screen uniformity(dse) out of the box. Fortunately Sony upgraded me to the latest(at the time) 900F free of charge. The only positive thing I can say about Sony displays is there color accuracy out of the box. That being said, I'll never purchase a Sony display again.

Jay Mammoth did it right.

You should definitely future proof then and get an LG OLED, has four 2.1 inputs, Dolby Vision the best input lag etc. and like scrubsr1 said you maybe able to get a CX for a really good price

I see the price of the CX 65" is comparable to the price of the C1 55". I'll have to watch more comparison vids but if the difference is not that noticeable I mine as well go with the bigger model.

Thanks guys.

No problem, yeah whatever the biggest size you can afford go for it. I can’t believe how light the 77” is, it only weighs like 65 pounds. I remember way back when I bought my 1st HDTV a 36” Samsung CRT, that thing weighed like 200 pounds.

I not only have to be price conscious but also be aware of space as well. I've moved my gaming to the bedroom a while ago, gaming sitting on the sofa was killing my back. So I purchased a nice comfy chair (NobleChairs Icon, Highly recommend) and plant myself a few feet away from the screen. Its been great but I don't think I should go beyond 65".

I remember my brother had this CRT that weighed as much as a small vault. It was super reliable though and lasted for what felt like decades.
