Official Thread Ratchet And Clank: A Rift Apart - June 11, 2021 UPDATE Preload Up

Looks like it's native but dynamic so it goes through the temporal injection thing to always give the impression of a 4K image even when the native res drops, whatever they are doing it looks great, Miles Morales in quality mode looks super clean and sharp, of course even on the PS4 Pro Spider-Man looked as sharp as any native 4K game on the market. Maybe you can see differences when you pause it an zoom 400% but since none of us do that it's silly to even bring up.
True, but I just thought since the reason, usually, behind having a lower frame rate is to include more effects. I guess it’s too much atm and maybe in an update or future title we’ll see rt in 4k 30fps games. The trade off doesn’t seem to be that grand with having 1440p at 60 with RT on, granted I’m no dev there. Wonder if they’ll ever get into the technical details like when naughty dog would hold events in la or Pasadena with their BTS magic…or at gdc/dice

60FPS + RT mode day 1, oh baby.

hrudey you can see during gameplay, the instant level transition seems to play a part.

That's on rails (literally) with almost nothing at all otherwise being simulated on screen. The performance is impressive and they can probably make much better use of it in set pieces, so we'll see when the game comes out.

I have a feeling the gameplay will make us cross through different dimensions during the level while fighting some bad guys eventually but yeah we will see.

I am super excited for this. The efficiency of Insomniac Games is pretty magical, how they are able to output such polished and impressive looking titles so quickly is no easy feat. They JUST released Miles like literally 8 months ago.

Dynamic res when you are pushing that hard this soon (it's just outside of the launch window) isn't that surprising especially with ray tracing. It may only drop below native a few times, it looks like there are a ton of particles etc going on and all kinds of things moving on screen at the same time.

In addition to that, it's always all about that visual fidelity/performance than resolution for me. 4k is nice but it's not essential when UE5's visuals at 1080p looks that amazing. I would rather the devs use that extra power on the visuals 11 times out of 10 on their games.

I still think dynamic 1440p/60 fps and dynamic 4k / 30 will be the norm since everything gets upsampled to 4k anyways these days and the techniques are good enough to make native and upsampled that much harder to discern. Just give me consistent 60fps with raytracing and I'll be happy.

Insomniac nailed it with the modes: fidelity, performance, performance and RT. Then just push the visual boundaries as hard as you can while maintaining great performance.

Thinking Think GIF

This game looks like so much fun. I already have FF7 Remake preordered and I'll have my hands full with that later this week. But I keep watching footage of this game and wonder how the heck did Insomniac have time for this. I know, Miles Morales wasn't a full game release but it wasn't short on content either.

Yet, God of War is delayed until next year. :really:

Insomniac is looking like the most efficient developer on the planet right now. I just wish Sony would spread out releases, but I guess if I wait I can get this game at a discount. So I should just be patient. BUT ITS HARD DAMMIT.

Native at times but drops so it's dynamic so in the end it is a dynamic res, if it ends up that it is only native like 10% of the time or when you look at the sky yeah calling it native 4K would be BS lol but as far as I know they've never actually said native or true 4K for this game anyway.

Sounds like the SSD's the game changer here in Ratchet. I laughed a little when DF mentioned RDNA 2 raytracing features 🤣

The switching of locations using rifts is a core gameplay mechanic. Dumping everything, just maintaining the character and pulling data from the SSD all in realtime into the new location is pretty damn fast all during gameplay too.

Looks like reviews are glowing. PS5 really hitting it out of the park with their multiple exclusives since launch. Impressive stuff, Insomniac. Can't wait to play it!

Digital Foundry Summary:
  • Insomniac upgraded the final version that we saw in previous trailers
  • The RT reflection is in now 4K, not in 1080p as was in the June 2020 trailer resulting in a significant upgrade in visual quality
  • The main characters have around a quarter-million triangles, without counting the hair/fur
  • There is an unprecedented level of detail in everything. Even the non-interactive random critters and bugs on planets and fired shotgun shells on the ground have perfect graphics as well as ray-traced reflections.
  • The dimension-hopping is also a part of the gameplay.
  • There are no frame drops or stutters when jumping between dimensions.
  • Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart looks better than the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie in most areas.

Thought the world swapping was more user controlled rather than scripted.

Just finished watching NXGamer. High praises from him too in the visuals/performance department. He said he had to be very very nitpicky to point out the imperfections.

Ray-traced reflections, industry leading PBR materials, jaw-rendering modes and the poster child for that SSD and core memory subsystem of the Playstation 5. It's not just a gimmick (the level/world instant transitions from rifts) but it offers entirely new gameplay mechanics impossible without it and the results are out of this world... literally.

...and now thanks to Insomniac's skills and the potential of the Playstation 5, we are now at that point when a Pixar movie is now a real-time game.

Everything from the visual quality, the use of HDR, the 3D audio and interaction of the world, the mixing up of that SSD and data transfer in and out of existence, the use of those haptic feedbacks. All of these and much more besides makes the game feel completely impossible on anything other than the Playstation 5 and that is exactly what next-generation is all about. Insomniac have certainly brought the goods.

I've been watching videos of this game and I'm surprised by many of the comments from some gamers. Things I've read some say are "I'll wait for a sale, can't spend $70 on a 15hr experience or Just buy it and complete it as fast as possible and trade it in to receive maximum credit for another title".

I don't understand, I've seen many complaints about bloated experiences within some games that pad things out so much that it bores the player into quitting. And yet here we have a highly polished and focused title that seems to be overflowing with fun from start to finish and I still see complaints. Ohh well, you'll never please everyone I suppose.

I have been reading it's closer to 10 hours. Even loser Jeff Grubb says it's more style over substance. But for me it just looks fun, so I just spend whatever I want for fun. It looks like a game I will enjoy from beginning to end.

Sometimes I think most gamers these days enjoy complaining about games more than playing games.

And he still gave it 5/5
