Bethesda didn't put Starfield on this pedestal, but after the disappointment of Redfall, only natural Xbox gamers will look towards the next big title which in this case is Starfield.
You can keep undermining the importance of Starfield but it is what it is right now no matter how unfortunate the circumstances are. Xbox hasn't had that "must play" game since Halo Infinite and even that was met with lukewarm reception with significant loss of players for a live service game. Redfall was supposed to be one of the big games of 2022 but got pushed backed a year and still didn't meet expectations... so the pressure now falls on Starfield which is pushed back too from 2022. And if that flops... you see the trend and it is not a good look. Even Phil and MS said so when they expressed disappointment with Redfall.
It is absolutely impossible to argue that Starfield is not crucial to essentially the entire structure and narrative of the rest of the Xbox Series X/S/? generation, based on where we are now.

"If Starfield fails that is…very bad. That would be two games out of the Bethesda purchase launching poorly from studios normally known for practically guaranteed hits. Even more than Redfall, it would indicate Microsoft does not know how to manage either old or new first party partners. If a supposed sure thing like Starfield can’t even stick the landing after all this work and delays to get it right, what hope do those other, less fleshed-out projects have? It may not be a fair narrative, as each project is different, but it will indeed by the narrative, and one that would be hard to refute."
