$500 million divorce, Bungie and Activision to go their own ways...

5 years for an avatar change. as if we won't all be dead by then.

What mediocre result will be spawned next from them, I wonder. Maybe a shooter.

We kinda can't time frame wise cause this could delay Destiny 3.
1-5 years is the best I can do.
Time frame isn't the point of the bet.
No game made them more/had more players then there Destiny franchise no way they are kicking it to the curb.

I guess it's too hard to do a bet on this. We'll just agree to disagree.

I think Destiny has a lot of baggage with gamers and I just don't view it as a franchise that Bungie truly believes in. Plus, linear loot shooters aren't the future of multiplayer.

I could be wrong but I'm willing to bet (figuritively speaking) Bungie wants a clean slate right now.

My guess/theory as someone who's played since D1 day 1 - the game just takes too much to make and improve. It is a successful game from a gaming standpoint, but not from a business standpoint. Activision wanted an AAA title (and AAA profits), while Destiny has always been a slightly smaller game (not that it doesn't have a ton of players, but it doesn't play with the COD uber games.

As a player since D1 launch, you can really see how they are pushing selling an "annual pass" and then using the "slow drip" content model. There's youtube streamers who play the game literally as a full time job and still don't have all the items yet. Forsaken came out the 1st week of September and many still don't have all the stuff that dropped with it.

The big issue is they just got real stingy with the drop rates. For normal people with full time jobs and who want to play other games, the game is just too slow paced.

Plus, outside of selling the annual pass, their microtransactions probably do little. They sell cosmetics which are super easy to earn for free. Good for gamers, but not for profit. Once you hit max level (50), every time you fill your XP bar you get a free cosmetic crate. It is super easy to just get whatever you want without paying a dime extra.

So they are going to bail on a sequel to a successful series that is well into development right after going through the trouble of acquiring its publishing rights? Makes sense.

Do we know Destiny 3 development started? Also, what's you're definition of a successful series? What's Bungies definition of a successful series?

The Forsaken expansion is incredible. Activision publicly saying they they were disappointed with sales after all their hard work was clearly a slap in the face and the straw that broke the proverbial camels back.
Bungie just wants to expand its game world and lore and all Activision can do is talk about their return.
Its better for the employees and their games that they get out from under Activisions thumb.

I wonder what was the issue(s) that got them to want to get out of their contract with Activision a year early?

Went through this with the job last year. We backed out of a 5 year deal after just 4 years. The decision to back out was made about a year earlier. Sometimes the relationship is just so toxic there is no saving it.

If their next game is a success, they'll support that IP with sequels. Destiny has way too much baggage to keep that IP going.

Don’t know about that. Destiny is a massive IP with a huge global fan base. I think you’ll see Destiny 3. But when? I’m not sure...

Good. f*** off Activision....now I hope Blizzard leaves you too.

As forr Destiny, I don't see much changing at all.

People want to paint Activision as the bad guy, but they pumped a lot of money into the game. Clearly they pushed the game towards profit, but we got a lot more updates than we ever would have. Remember in D1, there was only 1 good DLC. I think we are going to see much slower and fewer updates. The reason we've gotten regular content updates is because they brought in multiple studios to work on things.

The good news is hopefully they'll start working towards things that are long overdue like sandbox updates (that was actually supposed to hit end of this month anyway).

Also there doesn't need to be some sinister thing going on. Activision clearly wanted a AAAA game with big time profits. Destiny is a big game, but it is never going to get the widespread popularity of the big multiplayer games. The game is still big and has a very big active player base (remember, D2 added PC as well which is a ton of people).

True, but does Bungie have enough resources to keep the lights on while they take their time on content updates? I really wouldn't be surprised if Chinese company Tencent swooped in for another majority stake investment. They seem to be focused on taking over all of gaming.
Tencent is the biggest investment firm in the world, but Sunset would know too, he has stocks in Tencent.

Poor studio Bungie of smallish 750 employees never stood a chance against the massive Warframe from their massive Digital Extreme studio of massive 150 strong employees.

Its just not fair.

They made that money back ages a go.

It did get the widespread popularity , though. Theen they flushed it away with their ignorance and terrible DLC.

Destiny can't get better till they change engine, end of.

Never played Destiny, but have heard good things I guess? Last game I played by Bungie was Halo Reach, which I personally loved. Here's hoping that they right the ship and move forward with some good games.

Is it true that most of their Halo teams aren't even at Bungie anymore? I know a bunch went to 343, but haven't some gone elsewhere?

That I agree with. That has been a consistent problem from day 1. Honestly they should dump what they have and start with a new engine and a brand new game. They need to make a game where it doesn't take them ages to add content to.

It took them months and months to come up with a way to mass delete shaders, and even their solution was a half measure.

Yeah, there’s been maybe three to five studios formed from former employees. The one who gets around and probably best known is Certain Affinity

The problem with your argument here is that without vicarus visions and high moon studios from activision helping warmind and forsaken would not have been as good especially forsaken. The annual pass content is all bungie and so far it pissing players off.

I enjoy the engine in 4K/HDR/60 fps.
Looks great and plays pretty good minus the here and there bugs that come with PC gaming.
Its a taste of how it could be(the engine) on next gen hardware.

I thought Forsaken was mainly Bungie.

Actually, there is a far biggger problem with the argument, Forsaken isn't very good at all. Severly lacks content. Bounties are trash. The economy is a joke. They had an "end game" world that was no different from any other. End game was still nothing but a worthless power level grind. The random rolls turned out to be nothing but a frustrating piece of trash.

It didn't fix any of the long standing Destiny 2 issues.

I'm fairly sure there was another studio working on Forsaken with them. I can't seem to find any details, but I remember watching one of their twitch streams and seeing another group.
