Studio acquisition/purchase topic

I am hearing on the Sony front that they could be merging with a Japanese publisher...

Hopefully we see if that's true sooner rather than later.

Are there any other major publishers outside of square, sega and hmmmm, I’m stumped.
I don't know why people keep wanting them to pick up a Japanese publisher it'd be a total waste of money. Honestly buying any publisher would be at this point, they are all going to be very expensive, come with hundreds if not thousands of new employees and the value is diminished by over half because just about every game sells better on PlayStation. MS needs to start getting games out the door from the studios the bought in 2019 and of course Bethesda.

It does make me laugh when I see people say MS or Sony should buy square-enix, that company has over 5,000 employees that's more than double Zenimax so even if the purchase price is a little lower that is a huge amount of people to bring onto your payroll.

Perhaps, but I thought we were talking about Sony???

Pretty much everyone talks about MS buying another publisher, very few actually talk about Sony it seems, if your conversation was about Sony specifically I didn't see that I only saw what you said which didn't mention anyone in particular. It looks like maybe you were talking to someone I have on ignore so that could be why. Anyway the point I made goes for Sony too, people pushing for them to buy square only want them to do it for console wars nonsense, there is no real danger of MS buying them and Sony already has a great relationship with them, their IP's sell far better on PlayStation so why buy them? I can't see Sony wanting to buy any Japanese publisher, maybe buy some unused IP from Konami or something but that'd be about it.

The only reason I see it being good for us consumers if MS keeps buying up devs would be that it'll give us more day one gamepass games.
Otherwise, it's not great to make games exclusives imo.

As much as I think Bluepoint would be a nice addition, I don't think so. They have emphasized being an independent studio multiple times. 🤔

True, but that’s something insomniac was proud of and outspoken about as well

And Sony acquired Bluepoint officially today.

IO just became independent a couple of years ago didn't they? and CD is owned by Square-Enix so that's likely going to be expensive if they are willing to part with them at all. I know Avengers was a huge disappointment financially but that's likely on the execs shoulders not the dev team. Grubb is an odd duck, I don't get why they would bother with that to be honest, we'll see though. They bought a bunch of teams that made games for their platforms but didn't actually do any work directly for them so why would that be an issue for them now?
Their first game was Xbox exclusive, even published by the og Microsoft Game Studios.

Yeah a one off 17 years ago is basically a long relationship lol.

As far as Sumo they do a lot of work for a lot of publishers you are right, very few games are actually hits though. They did the newest sackboy game for PlayStation, they did CD3 which had some potential etc. They seem more like a pick up to be a support studio to help out the others or to make some smaller AA games. I wouldn't be surprised to see anyone pick them up but I don't think we'll see anything really big out of them even if they are.
