Anthem

The micro transactions in SWBF2 were blown way out of proportion. They were not an issue you could enjoy the game just fine. I had no trouble unlocking stuff and characters.

What bugs are you speaking of in BFV? Is this stuff you read on the internets or did you actually play these two games at launch?

The SWBF2 thing was not blow out of proportion. It was essentially a 60 dollar pay-to-win game which was absolutely absurd. The ability to buy star cards and such gave an unfair advantage to people who decided to buy their way to the top.

I spent zero money and had no problem unlocking what I wanted and doing well in the game. I remember it not being as bad as the internet haters made it out to be.

The original SWBF2 system wasn't good, and people complained. EA dumped the entire thing before launch. The problem is, while the things that bothered people 100% went away (and never made it into the finished game), the hate didn't.

BFV launches with no microtransactions, and only a plan to add cosmetics in (bland ones that nobody cares about) and people are still angry. That's the issue. The launch gets called "a disaster", yet many of us are playing the game and enjoying it wondering what all the fuss is about? People complaining about microtransactions when at the time you couldn't even buy anything.

The problem is that people continue to be toxic around everything EA. If you feel you don't want to buy their games, then don;t. However every EA game thread turns into the same thing and it gets tiring. Guess what? The problems with Anthem have nothing to do with SWBF2.

If you haven't played a game, maybe don't take the opinions of people on Reddit as fact? I will tell you flat out that people lie in order to make their point. There's a line between those trying to make games better and those who are just toxic for fun.

Guess what? When people are toxic all the time, the real problems get buried.

Might jump back in when/ if game feels less repetitive and loot is balanced and settled, this release feels like a cluster f***, feel bad for bioware tbh.

Yep, and if you don't reward them for listening, it won't be worth trying. By all mean give 'em s***, but also give them credit for the good stuff. Both Positive and Negative reinforcement have their place.

lol they're not hidden. There's actually a mission that unlocks the vanity shop, where you can buy skins and such. That said, the rate at which you earn in-game currency is surprisingly generous, so you can afford to buy expensive items really quickly without having to spend real money

Two things? We're not playing the same game. There are a couple of skins, but there are also textures, vinyls, and crafting mats. Saying future skins are "hidden" are like saying Fortnite only has a couple of items in their shop and "hides" microtransactions. ROFL.

Ultimately, what it boils down to is this: yeah, the game has microtransactions. However, unlike other games, they're pretty easy to avoid. Whether they'll change this is an entirely other question though. Could they nerf the rate you earn coin? Could they increase the prices? Who knows? But to suggest they're hiding things is silly, especially when you have seen them with your own eyes (odd that you only see two items somehow?).

61,000 coin item in the store lately (I believe it got pulled). I don't want to post this as a "hey look I was right" but more as a warning to not evaluate microtransaction prices only at launch. Sure, they are only cosmetics still, but I don't think it is a coincidence that this stuff comes in long after launch.

After reading the article, the devs at bioware are damn magicians to get this game out at all.

Yeah it reads like another horror story. I do like the core mechanics of this game though and I was hoping for a sequel. That seems unlikely after reading that.

The thing is that besides its critical response, the game seems to be selling well and making revenue for EA. I would be highly shocked if the game didn't get a a few big expansions followed by a sequel.

That’s what I’m hoping for.

Yep, no matter the mess that got them there, the base mechanics are great. They just need a lot more to it. More loot and more content.

As much as people want to throw dirt on Anthem, there's a good game in here. It needs a lot more work but it can get over the initial problems like so many other similar games have.

How BioWare's Anthem Went Wrong

https://kotaku.com/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964

Wow. Alot of the game's development mirrored, Andromeda. Frostbite problems, understaffed and mismanagement.

Thanks for posting this. It was a really interesting read and confirmed what players and reviews have been saying. Development for Anthem was a sh!tshow.

There were several things which stuck out to me. One being that it’s a no-brainer for EA to take further control over Bioware with all the chaos at the studio leadership allowed to fester and drain their talent pool. The other thing is an answer to the question of, why didn’t Anthem learn from other loot-shooters like Destiny? Well, turns out we now know Bioware devs were not even allowed to even openly discuss Destiny let alone bounce ideas off each other from that game’s example.

I really hope this game pulls a comeback kid move like what I’ve read Warframe did or like Destiny has done. I did have a lot of fun with the demo but did sense its lack of content and direction. But Anthem is still a game I’d like to go and play in the coming months and hopefully things have been improved upon by then.

Ohh, something else to add. It seems like the cool thing to hate on EA and for the most part they have earned the right to be called “The Bad Guy”. But for Anthem I really don’t think they are to blame. They gave Bioware 6-7 years to get this game done and they mucked its up at every turn, clearly they were in over their heads. So I don’t blame EA for setting a hard date for release to try and salvage and recoup what they could from this debacle now known as Anthem.

I mean, there's enough blame to go around.
I can blame the execs at EA for mandating the frostbite engine. Obviously Bioware does not have a handle on it given the results of development of their last 3 games.
I can blame Bioware proper for not having good project management. A good studio with strong leads does not spend 5-6 years on a project for it to semi come together in the last 18 months.

I can blame both the execs and bioware for having loft goals that were not any type of attainable.

Bottom line is there has to a be a management and culture shift at Bioware and EA if the studio is to survive. Because what has been reported does not sound like a studio that could go another game development cycle without serious changes being made. The devs are going to burn out and/or the quality of the output is going to suffer. Both of which tarnish the Bioware and EA brand.

Honestly, the early game they described without loot sounded fairly horrible. Go out and basically do a horde mode and then come back and "talk about it"? Whatever manager fought against that was probably right. Same with the flying.

Their entire new content roadmap is delayed indefinitely, including the cataclysm (raid type thing).

I am still optimistic that they get there someday. Realistically though you have to look at that being many months away.

I feel bad for those who dropped money on season passes. Its exactly why I don't buy them.

Actually this is one of those "free DLC" games. That's why this model can be a double edged sword. Had they charged people for a season pass, they would be obligated to crank it out faster.

Granted, them stepping back and fixing the game is a good thing, but the people who paid $60 need fixes and more content.

People are afraid that they just aren't going to put resources into fixing it, since their only revenue from this is microtransactions for cosmetics.

So, Best Buy has this title on sale for $29.99. I think that might be the sweet spot for me to dive in. I know, the game has problems and high among them is this looter-shooter with no end game. But I can fly like Iron Man and that's got to be worth 30 clams. I don't know, maybe.

Honestly I'm just getting back into this. I was stuck on the campaign part where you had to do certain public events which were difficult to find. I didn't think I even did it, but somehow moved on to the next mission.

The game is still in a rough state, and be prepared for empty servers (at least on PC). Still though, if you go in with realistic expectations it is still fun. Honestly though I bet you find it even cheaper this summer.

If you're looking for a looter shooter to spend hundreds of hours in, this isn't it yet, but it is certainly good for some fun.

Rumors are the game might be going EA Access or even f2p. There really is nothing in this game beyond the main story. End game content is barely there, terrible loot, etc. I'd honestly wait.

I see, so not even worth it at $29. Thanks, I'll pass on Anthem and continue my time with The Division 2 and add something else to the mix soonish.

This and the division have been my 2 biggest purchasing regrets of the generation. I guess these loot shooters or whatever people are calling these types of games are just not for me. I think I could've had fun with them had I had a consistent coop partner or group, but I don't play online much or have many friends who'd play on a consistent enough basis for me to retain interest.
