Anybody do any essential oil diffusing?

I'm looking for a better and fuller alternative than the standard candle, Febreeze products for scenting the house. I really love the smell of eucalyptus but the dried plants need a shower to work properly and don't really last that long. Do essential oils leave a film in the room over time? I just hate the sprays as they irritate me. Candles are decent but I'm always afraid of me or someone else leaving one lit.

I use oils all the time. They've never left any sort of film that I've noticed. The main issue is ensuring you don't accidentally spill any as it can be pretty toxic and will damage furniture/paintwork etc. I always put a burner on a plate of some description just in case..no matter how careful you are I'd recommend doing that. Definitely the best way to scent a house that I've found, especially given how cheap the oils are, plus they're like 6 drops of oil to a little puddle of water which lasts a couple of hours.

We've actually just gone back to using candles.

The missus was into the oils (out here, they're Air Wick products) and we have a couple of Reed Diffusers around the house. They're really good, but we do find that you have to be careful where you put them as they can stain quite easily. Just a drop on furniture and it's pretty much there forever unless you want to polish/revarnish.

Lately we've been buying "expensive" candles (out here, there's a place called Dusk which has really good quality candles) and we find the scent hangs around a lot longer too. We bought one on the weekend which we lit up for an hour that's been noticeable until yesterday - so there's definitely candle alternatives too.

Pfff..my farts last longer than that!

BraddersTheDog, I think I would stick with oils that can be consumed to reduce any possibility of toxicity. I've heard that they really stain anything they end up on. I have hard wood floors so I would have to be pretty careful. I like eucalyptus and I like fruity smells. Have you used any citrus oils? How are you getting the into the air, diffusing?

I do like candles but just don't feel comfortable having them lit for a long time. Deadpool, what candles have you switched too?

All the oils I've used have been consumable if that makes sense..I've used burners like this one:

You put a tealight inside it and light it, then put a few drops of oil on the top with maybe half a shot's worth of water. It diffuses it nicely leaving only a slight residue on the burner (diffuser) which you just wipe off. I've never found the oil going into the air to be any problem at all in terms of leaving residue elsewhere, the levels are too small I guess. My mum used to have these things going non-stop (even beneath shelves) and I never found any residue anywhere to be honest.

I've always been big on candles.

Me too. Once I was walking around the house naked when I slipped and landed on one. The crazy thing was it went right up my anus. I had to go to hospital and explain what had happened. Obviously it looked bad and I was really embarrassed. The doctor said the odds of that happening only a week after the incident with the vacuum cleaner were pretty slim, but I swear to God that's what happened.
