There's strong rumors that Apple will be updating AppleTV to support Bluetooth controllers. There's no app store per se for the AppleTV but that's rumored to come along as well. While support has been mixed with the recent ability to use a controller for your iPhone, using one for the AppleTV will seem more natural and give the feeling of playing on a console. The user base isn't massive for AppleTV. If they somehow make a splash reveal, and really push the controller option, it could give the AppleTV new life and make it more than just the "hobby" that Steve Jobs called the AppleTV.

iLounge has heard from reliable industry sources that Apple TV will soon be getting proper game support in an update, likely to come in March or earlier. We’ve heard that developers are currently working on Bluetooth controller options, and it’s expected that games could be downloaded directly to the Apple TV rather than relying on another iOS device as an intermediary. One developer has suggested that game support could be backward-compatible with the current-generation Apple TV. However, it’s unknown what current Apple TVs would use for storage — it’s possible iCloud could be part of a solution. This update would effectively put Apple TV on par with the latest Roku devices, which have already had their own app stores for some time. An Apple TV App Store has been awaited for years.

exactly what Microsoft should have done.

Xbox TV - $100-$150, all the tv s***/apps + xbla + extender for xb1.

Honestly still expect them to do it.

The AppleTV has no performance though.

This would be for a new Apple TV with an App Store.

Would be useless on then existing Apple TV.

iOS 7 includes a game controller API. The Apple TV App Store might basically be iOS filtered for apps marked to support controllers.

It's pretty big news really. Sony and MS don't want a casual competitor and something like this would probably outright destroy smaller competitors like OUYA.

Not to mention Nintendo. iOS already competes against Nintendos handheld business.

I guess I have a one track mind when it comes to games. I was trying to picture an Apple TV capable of running Battlefield 4 for example. At $99.00 for an Apple TV, I don't see that happening. Casual games, that I can see.

Maybe. It'll be interesting to see. I'd try it if UGF gave me the whole package for free.

Well look at what is possible on an iPhone 5S. Potentially the same chip/RAM inside of a next-gen Apple TV.

Or even if they went cheap and did the iPhone 4 platform chips.

Games don't even really have to be "casual". There's more RAM than last gen consoles, and enough graphical power to compete with them.. not even out of the picture for a Battlefield port of the Xbox 360/PS3 version.

Will they compete with true "next gen" games?

No.. but let's face it.. we are seeing tons of games this new gen that can and are being done on last gen hardware.

Ninty and Apple should join forces like Voltron to get things really interesting.

These Apple console rumours have gone on for ages, but maybe after all these years this is how Apple will venture into console gaming. A possibility.

Unless it's a dedicated game console with good specs, I just don't see it being accepted by the hardcore gaming audience.

bring it on, just don't hit us with the usual apple hardware releases like a new console every 6 months...

If Apple released a high priced, but poor speced system, hardcore gamers wouldn't bother.... BUT endless Apple fans and casuals who previously never cared for gaming would suddenly be lining up outside to buy it. LD

I think the only reason why Apple hasn't entered the console market is because they realize there isn't much pie left to snatch up. Maybe if Nintendo or Sony went under they'd be able to share the industry with Microsoft.

If they partnered with Nintendo that would be ideal. A super powerful console with Nintendo's awesome first party games and Apple's money at their disposal. That would be crazy.

I have an unjustified hatred of Apple though so if they actually did come out with a console and it was awesome I'm not sure I could buy it.
