I've been thinking of poking at 3D modeling. Partly to try stuff with VR Chat Avatars or Environments starting with objects. There are some tools like Vroid that can help build on basic avatar models. If I could model something in another program, I might be able to import it into Vroid like a hat or glasses or whatever.

I might be interested in making Environment Worlds or starting with basic assets from scratch. Maybe work up to Avatars from scratch. I think VR Chat is based in Unity 3D so I'm not sure if that's what should be used or if most other modeling formats can be imported into it.

I think some people are using Blender but I hear that's not so user friendly, though it's free.

starseeker is using blender, but he’s also got access to zbrush and I forget if it’s maya or max

I cannot use the free one, since I have Commerical use, but it opens up people to the software & I am a bit of an expert.

I have friends & comments from the internet asking me to make videos for my modeling, sculpting, & 3D printing as alot of people are interested to learn.

AI art is controversial for sure.

Anyway I bought finally a Display tablet on Amazon. Jesus, it's FAR FAR better than pen tablet I used for past decade. SO much easier to get lines correct.

Ever thought of doing a timelapse video of your artwork?

It’d be cool to see yo work your magic 👍

I thought he had acceess to Autodesk Maya which is way over my budget. Maybe through his company though.
Blender is more than capable enough. I suggest looking up Blender Guru on youtube and also CG cookie for their tutorials.
Ive been out of that scene for years though...

So, I've been to busy with my stupid job, but finally got around to try a custom VRChat avatar. I made it with Vroid, but Unity requires a plugin to use this file format so had to get that installed. Quite a bit to the process that is not intuiting like making custom textures.

Some animation is missing to I'll try to tweak this again later.

I wondered if anyone else dabbles in VRChat stuff and might have any tips?

3D is fvcking complicated
It helps if you know some geometry, but yeah, it’s like photo shop, everything has many ways of achieving it. You could learn something and later find a video that makes you go “huh, less steps….” But sometimes you’ll lose a modifying layer.

starseeker and I think Dark Helmet and or DarkPassenger have worked with 3d software

I think aside from the modeling, editing the Textures gets weird, or especially if trying to add effects to them.

Basically, I mess with VRChat and attempting my own custom avatar or getting into it more as a hobby.

I've seen Avatars and Worlds that have added cool glowy Bloom effects and would like to put that on my models.

3D is a very wide field. But if you have question on modeling in general, character or environment, or CAD, 3D painting , texturing , STL conversion, 3D sculpting, software to recommended, how to learn, feel free to ask me in forum or PM.

If I know it was this easy, I will have transitioned a lot sooner.
Before people get excited or astonished, I am transitioning from Maya to Blender.
I put a long list of equalevance tools, goals, options I need as mainly a modeler in Blender, & less than 4 days mostly in evening, I am about 90% done. Only major thing left is UV & texturing. Most topics are super easy to just google or play around in Blender. Obviously there is stil a long way to path of being speedy & competent, & there are more stuff to be learn, but current progress is much faster than I expected.

Aight this is an update on what I was messing with doing a custom VRChat Avatar. I redid the look a bit using VRoid and since I'm a noob, just modified one of their costume packs by mostly redoing the texture.

I moved it to Unity which requires a Plugin to read the Vroid files so had to figure that out.

Finally, followed a tutorial to add Bloom Texture FX. I just think glow pattern look is a neat aesthetic. For still being such a beginner, I like this and may do different versions of it just swapping colors.

One of the issues figuring this out is Unity has lots and lots of menus with tiny fonts, which are even smaller in YouTube tutorial videos. It can be a pain in the ass trying to follow what they're talking about.

I think Blender can do the same tweaks, but Unity is the recommended program and used by the VRChat Creator Companion they make available to help people get started.
