Imran Khan: "Sony has locked timed exclusivity for some huge and widely known multiplatform games"

Earlier he said Sony was paying lots of money to studios that normally are associated with Xbox. Studios/games Xbox would "brag" about having on stage.

Also Matt from Resetera who has proven many times to know stuff has said :

"Yeah, there is a lot of it coming and the scale will be shocking"

So I would say prepare, for each E3 from now on where brand new games are announced and as a Xbox first or only player you need to be aware that the game can be timed exclusive to Sony and that could be months, it could be a year like FF7R.

No matter which company does it, this practice sucks. We finally are starting to get games we've missed out on, Yakuza, now even Dragon Quest. According to insiders FF16 is one that Sony has locked for a deal, sigh. But it's only the beginning. There are apparently a lot and the scale will be shocking. f*** off with that bulls***.

People are speculating that Starfield could be one of them, since they have timed exclusivity on Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, but that's Bethesda the publisher and these games aren't even in the same league (sales wise) as a brand new BGS IP. Also BGS has had a great business relationship since Morrowind with Xbox.

Besides, big well known multiplatform games doesn't sound like Starfield which is a brand new IP.

Whatever the case, this news is just bad, really bad. Especially since I plan to buy XSX first and I was planning on having that as the main console again. Sigh.

I doubt this, I can't see any developer / publisher wanting to lock into a platform this long. Timed exclusives are bad and I thought we are finally getting rid of this practice. Sony have great first party exclusives so not sure why they have to stoop to this level.

Its an unfortunate thing that no gamer benefits from but Sony was always going to have some answer to Microsoft buying all those studios. Would you rather see them do this or make acquisitions?

Yeah it sucks, but I don't see Sony changing their strategy, especially with how it's been their way of dealing with competition since the Sega Saturn days. It would be nice if the media would call them out for it, but that won't happen.

Hard for them to call them out for something they have both always done

What I read, they said if your crying about spiderman in the Avengers game, go buy a box of tissues because it will get a lot worse.

Timed exclusivity doesn't bother me as much since there's so damn much to play just on gamepass and I have so little time that waiting isn't a big deal.

They should stop doing this period. I don't get a kick from first on Xbox. The fact that FF7R is first on PS for a year doesn't make me want to get the game or PS. It makes me look at Square and Sony like they're a******s.

I agree and I think people don't criticize the publishers enough. People always get mad at Sony and Microsoft but its the Square Enix of the world that bone the Xbox owners and then asks for their money just the same.

Sony has no reason to care if Xbox owners are uphappy. Square Enix has every reason.

But still we have a thread where people are hoping Microsoft is going to buy WB so do people really care about this stuff or do they just care about how it impacts them personally?

Buy a PS5 instead, problem solved.

Acquisitions similar to what Xbox did? The Medium sized ones? I mean Sony wasn't ever going to aquire a Square Enix or Bethesda and so on, these games should stay multiplatform and none of these ridiculous timed deals.

What I read, they said if your crying about spiderman in the Avengers game, go buy a box of tissues because it will get a lot worse.

Yes, it sounds like it's going to get ugly.

Yes and no. Plenty to play as it is, but this is not something that should exist. It was bad enough already with Sony and FF7R and for fans of Destiny 2 the year exclusive DLC nonsense. Had never imagined it would get this much worse.

I can't imagine Phil Spencer being happy about this, but what is he going to do about it?

Buy a PS5 instead, problem solved.

Or you know.....let these games stay multiplatform and release across all the systems on day one?

Sony is the market leader and that isn't going to change at all, it's that simple. They undoubtedly have plenty of games in the works and the install base of PS4 will absolutely buy PS5. They really don't need to do this.

I was hoping MS would buy WB because out of the other possible options, they seem like the best bet to keep the studios doing good releases. Activision would shackle them to making more dumb ass CoD games; EA, we've already seen what has happened to studios MS has let EA run away with as far as Bioware and Bizarre Creations, they just don't seem to integrate studios well. I'd pick MS as the lesser of the evils in that situation.

Xbox have been buying 1st party capacity for this very reason. If they buy WB then its only Activision and Focus and Take Two left.
Absolutely no way these deals have been signed before price points for the SKU's have been decided either.

I don’t get this whole thing about “Xbox would brag about having on stage” and “Normally associated with Xbox”

CD Project, BioWare, and Bathesda are usually the 3 with Microsoft. But Rockstar, WB Games, Square, and are usually on the Sony stage now.

So the wording really doesn’t make sense to me especially when people keep saying FF16.

The biggest f*** you that would get the hardcore gamers going is a timed Alan Wake sequel.

I don't disagree I am just saying that is clearly worse than timed exclusives and the people that would be upset about about Microsoft buying them may not feel the same if Sony got them and vice versa.

And it isn't just about WB as we have seen rumors and desires of them getting EA and Sega. I don't think people like to consider how they would feel if the other side did it

Biggest Fu's MS can do is take Minecraft off PlayStation, undercut PS5 in price, include a pack in game, charge less than PS+ for online play/package,throw tons of money for the exclusivity of popular 3rd party games/content, advertise the spec advantage on major networks and finally put XSX salesman in the big stores during the holidays to grab those people who can't get the kid a PS5 cause it's sold out.

Bonus
Re-launch Gears 5
It was huge in North America last gen and will likely be the best launch exclusive plus it's gorgeous.

I dislike timed exclusives from big publishers because they add nothing for gamers. Just subtract something from others.

That said, I don't want to see Microsoft entertain this. Money spent on temp exclusives is money that can be invested into first party. Keep building up the foundation that will pay dividends in the long term.

Well, Bethesda Game Studios has had a great business relationship with MS ever since Morrowind on the first Xbox. They also were on stage with Fallout 4 and I believe Fallout 76. I don't remember if they were in Xbox presentations with Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas though.

Anyway, there is also a poster called SweetNicole on ResetEra Era, apparently in the know about s*** too and she said "think about a game with outer space and/or guns.".

Doom
Prey
Borderlands
Mass Effect
Starfield

Are possibilities. Doom? Nah, no way they got a brand new one coming already, DLC? Possible, but I think she meant something big. Prey I really doubt too. Borderlands 4? Nah. New Mass Effect when Dragon Age is in full development? What's left is Starfield......sadly.

I'm gonna be extremely f***ed up if they pull some s*** with that one.

It is what it is. Microsoft can't compete against Sony directly. They aren't even trying to compete against Sony directly anymore. That doesn't mean they can't be successful of course.

Entering this gen, seems like all the big players are all doing their own thing.

Sony stayed the traditional console generation route.

Microsoft wants to be a services company and the entire company shifted to that focus over the last decade. Microsoft just wants you to subscribe to their services and pay a monthly fee.

Nintendo is nintendo and they def going to stick with the hybrid solution(unless they are dumb. It is Nintendo after all).

The reason Sony is locking down all these timed exclusives is because they can. Microsoft isn't throwing money at locking them down. They will throw money at making games launch day and date on gamepass, but they aren't going to spend big on third party timed exclusives. Any investments they make in anything games related is because it adds value to gamepass/their azure cloud service infrastructure.

Microsoft has enough studios to release a first party game every quarter if you consider a 3 year dev cycle per game. A lot of their game releases are going to be more GaaS model. That's not to say they will have no traditional games, but in order to make gamepass a success, they need a steady stream of games and support for those games.

Big budget 3rd party times exclusives do not make sense to Microsoft's current goals.

If you believe Imran Khan he said Sony pretty much went to every major publisher. He said Microsoft is willing to pay but not what Sony is paying. So that means just about everything is on the table.

Them waiting on a PS5 price announcement and having a weaker(rumor) sku says they are.

Respectfully disagree. The point of the lockhart is to entice people that don't usually buy next gen consoles until years into next gen to jump in and subscribe to gamegame pass. It's also to entice people that may want a secondary console but don't want to spend $500 on the Series X.

yeahhhh that would be a no.

Yeah I am preparing for bad news on that. If they end up having a timed exclusive deal I hope they are upfront about for now long and hopefully it's not more than 3 months or so.

This has put a huge dent in my excitement for next gen. Almost sounding like Xbox will become like Nintendo now with missing out on many games, only difference is that for Xbox it'll be for a few months or a year.

Mat has zero credibility on resetera. He was laughably wrong on hardware specs between the consoles.

Maybe the “journalist” who has this info should write an actual article and name games. Until then he is inserting fear and uncertainty just before a console release to further a particular consoles agenda.

Sony has these gaming “journalists” as part of their unofficial PR teams and fan clubs. They should be embarrassed with how often they are used.

I don't think Matt ever lent any credibility to any of the hardware spec rumors, he let Kleegamefan hang on his own PS5 spec rumors from what I remember.
