As a Xbox first buyer the news about Sony making lots of huge timed deals worries me

Mat has zero credibility on resetera. He was laughably wrong on hardware specs between the consoles.

Maybe the “journalist” who has this info should write an actual article and name games. Until then he is inserting fear and uncertainty just before a console release to further a particular consoles agenda.

Sony has these gaming “journalists” as part of their unofficial PR teams and fan clubs. They should be embarrassed with how often they are used.

I don't recall him doing that. In fact, once rumors appeared that Andrew Reiner from Game Informer said PS5 was more powerful according to devs.....Matt said he expected MS to end up with the more power.

I don't think Matt ever lent any credibility to any of the hardware spec rumors, he let Kleegamefan hang on his own PS5 spec rumors from what I remember.

Yeah, exactly. Matt is a good source. And I wish Imran was a nobody, but he isn't. If he had said a new Banjo was in the works I would have not seen any reason to not believe that. Same with this. As much as it sucks, it seems this is what next gen is gonna look like. Now I just hope these deals don't last too long, FF7R for a full year was f***ed up as it is.

Mat went with his thumb in the air and added to the same echo chamber that he was hearing the same thing.

As for this rumor it strikes me as pretty similar. A “journalists” makes a huge claim....buried in a pod cast. So the story gets out there....but under the cover of “that’s just what I’m hearing.” Playstation Era runs with it that Sony is on the war path with other “insiders” adding credibility by saying that are hearing the same the thing.

So heading into the holiday where many people, if they can considering the economy, can only afford one console then the buying decision is now impacted by a rumor that those huge AAA games....may be locked to P5 for a unspecified time period. I find that claim to be completely irresponsible by a “journalist” who will not go on the record with a actual story.

I don't think your theory is without merit but these systems are going to sell out regardless so these types of rumors that most people will never hear about don't move the needle much

Microsoft wants to be a services company and the entire company shifted to that focus over the last decade. Microsoft just wants you to subscribe to their services and pay a monthly fee.
you just describe most major software film. the change of selling of product to provide “service”.

Big franchises are not going to suddenly become exclusive. The last time it happened with Tomb Raider was a disaster

Well, Bethesda Game Studios has had a great business relationship with MS ever since Morrowind on the first Xbox. They also were on stage with Fallout 4 and I believe Fallout 76. I don't remember if they were in Xbox presentations with Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas though.

Anyway, there is also a poster called SweetNicole on ResetEra Era, apparently in the know about s*** too and she said "think about a game with outer space and/or guns.".

Doom
Prey
Borderlands
Mass Effect
Starfield

Are possibilities. Doom? Nah, no way they got a brand new one coming already, DLC? Possible, but I think she meant something big. Prey I really doubt too. Borderlands 4? Nah. New Mass Effect when Dragon Age is in full development? What's left is Starfield......sadly.

I'm gonna be extremely f***ed up if they pull some s*** with that one.

Mass Effect remastered or a new Mass Effect in general is the only thing I can think of. Dead Space returning maybe?

There isn’t much in outer space and with guns that make sense from a production standpoint. Both Borderlands and Doom just had new releases. Prey isn’t big enough to be impactful.

And anything from Bethesda really doesn’t seem like a big deal...Especially with how their past releases have been.

I am going with Mass Effect Remastered and/or New Game both coming first on PS5.

Microsoft buying up studios that primarily created games for PS and Nintendo throughout the years = YAY!!! Xbox For the win!

Sony pays for timed exclusives = BOO!!! Sony is the worstest company ever!

It's even more hilarious when Phil complains about it, when he's been doing the same thing over the years. If people would buy the console with the games they were interested in, instead of buying a plastic box with the name they like, none of this would be an issue.

I’m ok with a like a month exclusive or few there after, like six. But it’s not just the people with plastic designer postmodern boxes. It now effects those who design and build their own with aluminum housing, mood lighting and power supply to run a fridge, a clothes dryer at the same time whilst cooking their bacon in a mini electric oven...at the price of a reliable used car.

hell thats one reason why Bungie wanted out of their contract with Activision and Sony.

I think you confused Sony with MS.

bungie was always outspoken, especially Marty Odonel and others who left, I’m too lazy to find their interviews. But back on the 360 days, before reach (maybe they did it with that game) they found sponsors for their map packs so they wouldn’t cost anything...but if they couldn’t they at least had their packs go free after a certain period. They were pretty gamer focused so people would be on equal grounds, they didn’t like splitting the playerbase

Which studios?

The thing is....Xbox had a problem. They knew that after finally having their priorities right (Xbox One X for example) they had to up their game when it comes to well....their games. They didn't exactly have many studios left and complaints keep coming about how it's always only Halo, Gears and Forza.

So what could they do other than acquire small to medium sized studios and hire people from there on? It starts somewhere. And yes this means these games won't come to PS anymore, the studio you are talking about isn't exactly known for AAA titles, something which when I look at Sony fans mostly care about.

What Sony apparently is doing is taking big amounts (matt said the scope is shocking and its many deals) of multiplatform games and locking them up for months, and a year tops. Why didn't Sony also try to acquire some studios that were open for acquisition? They bought Insomniac not too long ago, there are still studios left that probably wouldn't mind the "assurance" of not being independent anymore.

I wish Sony was trying to compete with MS in terms of Game Pass and leave third party releases alone, let them just launch day on across all systems the game is made for. Is all I ask.

As for Rare, didn't Nintendo just not want to work with them anymore and Xbox then acquired them?

One of the worst arguments. Companies change all the time. The people and strategy have changed since Phil has been in charge compared to the 360 days. And buying studios is not the same as taking a known multiplatform game and paying for it to not show up on someone else’s device.

When you buy a studio it’s because you want that company to be apart of your brand moving forward because you believe those games best fit your audience. 6-12 month money hat to keep s*** away is again not the same.

Then people want to get on Microsoft because they did it to. Come on. When you have to go back to the 360 era for 99 percent of the examples you are reaching. The only game this gen was Tomb Raider. First game was multi platform, 2nd was being made for all platforms, and then it was kept exclusive for a year. Titanfall was a new IP so it doesn’t count and Dead Rising was a game that wasn’t going to be made and Microsoft funded the game.

I'm really excited about next gen...and honestly this sport these two corporations are playing over the future of the gaming industry is fun to watch. It's OK to be upset at some of the tactics...but realize the things leading to these tactics is a growing, evolving industry in which more diverse and high quality content is being funded and made more accessible than ever before regardless of which platform you prefer.

The idea that Phil is sitting in a room with Nadella and Hood with his head down, not able to look them in the eyes saying "we just can't compete" is really hilarious. I love how the internet has made this behemoth of a company who has more cash on hand than any mega corporation in the world that just elevated gaming to one of it's core divisions only a couple years ago to be "The Little Engine that Could".

You have to ask "why"? For a company that has a 2 to 1 lead in console sales in an era where it’s harder for consumers to switch ecosystems, with an established 1st party and incredible mindshare at this point…why spend so much money on temporary solutions if it’s not necessary? With Microsoft’s other stool legs (PC and Xcloud) it’s not like flattening them in consoles puts them out of gaming. So what’s with this expensive temporary aggression?

If you believe the rumors that Sony knocked on every door (and I think we should) then there's no reason to disbelieve the rumors that Microsoft also knocked on every door. Sony and Microsoft decided on different priorities. The moneyhat route is a lot more cost effective for Sony due to their market position. On the flip side, growing 1st party, shopping for IP and Game Pass partnerships is where the expense is more justified for Microsoft. Where as Sony is starting over, all Microsoft 1st party games launch on PC where there's an established, growing gamer base which dilutes the risk of 1st party investment.

I would temper calling any company evil or good guys based on their strategy. They are both cut throat. Xbox gamers can't cry that a game is temporarily held from their favorite platform and then cheer when a multiplat dev or multiplat IP is purchased by Microsoft. They are both going to be cut throat in their own ways.

If you want to play everything good next gen, you'll need to be in both ecosystems. If you don't have the time or money for that, you'll have plenty in whatever ecosystem you choose.

From a purely selfish perspective, as someone who will be buying both consoles I’m kinda happy that both MS/Sony are going down kinda different routes. I mainly play on Xbox but with MS so far not showing VR any love on consoles, buying a PS5 for VR and exclusives is a no brainer for me. If Sony has a lot of third party games tied up for a significant period of time, then that’s even more of a reason to pick one up. I just wish Sony would offer a gamepass service of their own as paying up to £60 for a game feels very costly now after subscribing to gamepass for the last year or so.

They had to do it but I do think there is a difference between recognizing they had to do it and standing up and cheering when a mega corporation buys someone and still today going around and saying I hope they buy so and so which people are still doing.

Sony probably had looked into more acquisitions and may make some but I'm not sure why we are really supposed to see that as such a better outcome. We are really supposed to hope these two just gobble everyone up?

It makes me wonder what kind of musical chairs we'll see when the industry finally goes all digital.

Well well PS5 struggling RE8 village scene 1080@60 when XBX cruising at 4K. Granted it's most likely engine optimisation but I think we will see a lot of games native 4K on the X while PS5 will need some sort of checker board smoke and mirrors. Explains the timed exclusives in a way.

Besides if the XBX and PS5 have price parity or even worse the X being cheaper 😯

It won't be a 1080p vs 4K difference.

Worse case scenario will be 1800p vs true 4K(2160p)
