Official Thread Avowed - Fall 2024

Don't really think he's very credible his history is shady af and apparently holds some resentment towards obsidian, could of course be completely true and perhaps for the better?

It could be true, I mean it's not like all of these studios MS picked up were in amazing shape, there is a reason some came so cheap. This is supposed to be one of the better ones though. Look how many leads have left 343 in the last few years, it happens. That doesn't mean the game is going to be bad, they haven't shown anything more than a CGI trailer for it yet so they have all the time in the world to get it right, it'll be at least 3-4 years before ES6 comes out so they don't have to rush to beat that.

Avellone's word isn't credible at all to me. He's previously gone out of his way to criticize the studio and studio head ( his main beef) multiple times.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some left Bethesda, either for disliking ms, creative differences, work environment or not wanting to be part of a big corporation.

but we havent seen departures from studios, besides the most notable one of Drew Murray going back to insomniac on good terms….the studios that have been pretty vocal of their independence like double fine or ninja theory.

I wonder if there’s any bad blood between obsidian and their newly adopted kin that is Bethesda

Pretty sure they claimed Outer Worlds was in trouble and that turned out fine.

Plus as mentioned the guy clearly has beef with the studio.

If what he said about people leaving is true that means it's not about a beef it's just a fact, I have no idea if it's true or not though.

Pretty sure some actual websites would have reported it if loads had left.

I know what you meant, but I found this combination of words to be funny. Polishing up the old resume for a gig at Fox? ;)

Would they even know? what if the people who left didn't make a big twitter goodbye or it wasn't announced? it doesn't have to be loads I believe he was talking about specific positions not huge groups of people leaving.

This and his recent drunk rant showed that he's been disconnected from the situation since he left. The Josh Sawyer comments were the most out of touch. Sawyer was believed to be leaving Obsidian when Microsoft first bought them out because he's been very public about being burned out on AAA. He had no interest in leading Avowed despite the Pillars world being his baby. Somehow he's still at the studio working on his smaller passion project which leads me to believe the business people gave him what he wanted to keep his talent.

Obsidian has five projects in the works based on LinkedIn info. A few are smaller. It's a good way to keep talent that wants a break from AAA. Grounded devs and Sawyer weren't forced into small games. That's not even logical.

Microsoft has lost creative leads at some of the other studios and it usually gets highlighted when it happens. Obsidian may be one of the most stable and well-run studios outside of Bethesda that they've acquired. Creatives who've come through have gone on record to say they have the best tools for the types of games they make. They spin up teams who work on diverse projects with success. Solid track record led by different creatives. Feargus may have made questionable business decisions in the past but there's no evidence he doesn't know how to run a studio. Behind the scenes, they seemed to weather the pandemic better than most Microsoft studios. Avowed was the only big Xbox Studio project that didn't get an internal delay.

It should be noted that Avellone went on similar rants before and right after the Microsoft buy-out. There's evidence of him embellishing and presenting things out of context previously. He's an alcoholic with a history of lying publicly, being unprofessional and has been accused of sexual misconduct. Not exactly the guy you use as a character witness.

Kotaku seems to always find this out.

Kotaku is on it's last legs, I don't think they care unless it's some kind of sexual harassment or abuse. That being said that studio isn't one that people are paying a ton of attention to, they haven't showed a second of gameplay yet so it's hard to have a lot of controversy over a departure when the game could still be in the planning stages for all we know.

Forgot about this. I know it’s years away, but definitely interesting.

I hope this info means we get a new trailer at TGA. To summarize the article:

Details on Xbox exclusive Avowed: The Outer Worlds meets medieval fantasy

• Albeit enhanced engine from The Outer Worlds
• Featuring multiple class playstyles
• Wield two daggers and be a stealthy rogue, or dive into archery with a two-handed bow.
• Pillars-style guns may also appear in the game.
• Combat to be more loadout-based than The Elder Scrolls.
• Warriors will get access to more physical attacks like swordplay, powerful kicks, and shield bashes.
• Casters will be given a range of spellbook options.
• Avowed seems to be a far more colorful game.
• Swimming capabilities.
• Destructible environments, using lit torches and fire spells to burn down blocked entryways too. Fire spells leave areas coated in flames too, which cascade against walls and floors.
• Jez expects it to be more like a hub system, which connects large areas with an overworld map, complete with interior areas and dungeons, like Outer Worlds, rather than a full-blown open world like Elder Scrolls.
• Good chance we'll see Avowed in a playable state by E3 2022
• Avowed is deep into pre-production at Obsidian Entertainment.
• The studio is close to having a working early version of the game, with many mechanics and core gameplay pillars already implemented.
• Also Hellblade II maybe shown at The Game Awards this year

Jez is pretty reliable,he works for Windows Central I believe and had a few correct scoops before...this game will be awesome, whenever it comes out.

I liked Outer Worlds but it was just ok,combat was a little weak and the graphics where nice but something was off about them, texture or color wise lol,not sure how to explain it.

Yeah, I also really liked the Outer Worlds, but agree with your criticisms. I think that by the time it ended you felt like it should really just be getting started; like it should be opening up into a whole other narrative, still allowing you to unlock combat abilities, new worlds, etc.

I didn't think the Outer Worlds looked that great. So I'm kind of disappointed by the engine being used. I also liked the darker tone of the trailer.

Game looks like a huge meh to me... But I've been wrong countless times before and you shouldn't judge a book by its cover... But yeah, meh looking imo
