I love watching a good doc. Interesting, enlightening and often stimulating on a rudimentary level. Being informed and educated makes us all better. Sometimes Docs are closer to propaganda than documenting realities. Sometimes they are mocking(Mockumentary) the documentaries. It's nice to see vice.com 's documentaries becoming so well known all over the world. It seems we're in a period right now where Docs are very popular!

Grizzly Man, is still my all time favorite. The man of the subject matter is called crazy by many but I genuinely ask myself if I really would act very differently had I spend so much time in isolation. Obviously it takes a special person to choose that path.
It's also a strange documentary from the perspective of a portrait doc. As this is 1300 hundred hours of edited material after he died. I'm not very familiar with Herzog, but he seems like a smart dude in my book. I really love this film. The real star of the film is all the crazy people around the main character.

Murderball, is one of those stories that seem almost too fictional to be true. It's all so perfect. Besides venturing into the origins of how a bunch of wheelchair bound guys became disabled, it deals with them finding a sport they can do and still be satisfied with. And on a parallel storyline it follows their path to the handicapped Olympics while facing off against their arch rivals team Canada lead by an American flip flopper coach who left as team coach of the American team in a dispute. It's major drama, but it's awesome.

What are some of your favorite documentaries?

One thing I thought was interesting that was more of a TV show was HBO's The Autopsy featuring Dr. Michael Baden M.D.

Strange but interesting stuff if you're curious about forensics.

Best of the best.

I like a good documentary, too. Some of the ones I've enjoyed:
  • How to Die in Oregon (self-euthanasia)
  • Thy Will Be Done (I think that was the title ... great doc. on anti-gay religious zealots)
  • Maxed Out (consumerist society)
  • Affluenza (ditto)
  • Memories of the Camps (raw footage of WWII concentration camps with sparse narration... disturbing)
  • The Bridge (suicide)
  • Skid Row
  • Aileen (female serial killer)
  • Indie Game
  • They Call it Myanmar (life in Burma)
  • Whore's Glory (life as a prostitute)
  • Into Great Silence (life as a monk)
  • The Civil War

ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room

I often wonder if this whole event should have been a big clue about how our economy was really functioning at the time. That big E should be the symbol for Epic Fail. On the surface, they seemed rampantly successful, but it was all shuffling papers and deception.

I also wonder how common this kind of nutty corporate culture is.

An Unreasonable Man

Really a documentary about Ralph Nader's experiences in the crazy election system we have as a 3rd party candidate.

Been a while since I saw it, but it was an interesting character study to. It does discuss his career since his face down with General Motors.

It's hard to find a documentary that is actually documenting something and not a wholly biased hit piece.

Has anyone else seen this movie Fat Head?

It basically seeks to tear down Government guidelines on what the human diet should be. Then it explores Low-Carb eating. Seems close to the Atkins thing. It's also a rebuttal to Spurlocks's SUPER SIZE ME.

It seems well argued, but wondered what anyone else thought of it.

I've seen a TON of docs over the years. Hoop Dreams. Best doc ever made.

Drome gets points for suggesting Autopsy. Another good HBO one is Bangin' in Littlerock. Not sure if you can find that one though.

Just saw this. Fog of War. McNamera talks about being the man who lived and felt the cold war, as well as the Vietnam War. What a crazy life for one man to live...

Kind of a biographical documentary about a biographical comic book.

No superheroes here. Just a moody guy from Cleveland, OH.

The main character just scraps by for a long time and has a yearning for some kind of creative outlet. This, plus a chance meeting with slightly mentally unhinged illustrator R. Crumb, leads to this unusual cathartic book illustrating the daily life and trials of Harvey Pekar.

Paul Giamatti fills the role of Harvey for past events, but the real Harvey and his friends appear to in short interview sequences. Harvey does the narrating, but also takes a break to informally chat about how he feels about making this film.

Sadly, since the making of this film Harvey Pekar possibly from accidentally drug overdose and yet another onset of cancer.

Without a doubt one of the coolest documentaries ever - it's basically a spy-documentary wich documents how a french line-dancer in secret snuck into twin-towers to walk on line between them, much to the shock of New York sometimes during the 70's.

I laughed until I cried when he were running back and forth while taunting the helpless policemen in a chopper, and a few policemen on the ledge of the building a few yards away - wich couldn't get to him.

Yeah, Man on Wire was solid. Highly recommend that.

Best ECW documentary ever. Haven't seen Barbed Wire City, but this was a great look on the history and controversies within ECW. Sandman getting crucified, New Jack stabbing Mass Transit, the early days, dying days, and just a much better variety and overall feeling of honesty compared to the Rise and Fall of ECW, which is a decent watch to get other opinions, but this one is pretty much pure shoot from the hip.

Just watched Of Two Minds on Netflix. Really good documentary on Bipolar Disorder. Gives you a sense of what it is like to live with it. Not a sterile clinical description, but very personal stories. Worth watching, I think, for anyone who knows someone with bipolar, or if you're just interested in the topic.
